- Reviewed in the United States on March 11, 2025As an avid reader of mystery stories, I enjoyed Tarnished Remains. The author created a strong, but likeable heroine in Shandra Higheagle. I enjoyed how Ms. Jager wove Shandra's Native American heritage into the story. I liked the quirkiness of Lil's character. The plotline was interesting, and the author followed through in a logical, uncomplicated sequence which held my attention. The killer was a total surprise.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 2, 2017While digging up clay at her ranch to use in her pottery-making, Shandra Higheagle digs up a boot attached to a skeleton. The decades old body is discovered to be the old flame of Shandra’s reclusive employee, making the employee Person of Interest No. 1 to the county detective on the case. Shandra knows that while her employee might be odd, she’s not a killer, so begins the search for the real murderer.
This series straddles the line of romance dressed up in mystery clothes for me, but the Arizona setting, Shandra’s Native American heritage, and the attraction between Shandra and the detective, Ryan Greer, keep drawing me back. She’s been burned by a couple of bad relationships, and Ryan’s former fiancée dumped him to marry his brother. Watching them dance around their hurt and attraction is compelling, and I like that the author isn’t dragging the relationship out. I’m only two books in to the series, but while they are taking it slow, they are taking it. There’s a bit of mysticism in the stories as well – Shandra’s grandmother comes to her in her dreams and helps her uncover clues to solve the mystery. Ryan actually places more belief in the validity of this than Shandra does, which is a nice switch for a mystery.
I do have a minor quibble with this book – the author bounced between third person and first person and it was disconcerting. For example, she was describing Shandra thinking about how much she enjoyed being with Ryan and then flipped into “I don’t doubt with Ryan around there would be many more.” And in another location, “She’d thought about connecting with cousins on Daddy’s Side. I should really do that.” I’m guessing the “I” references were showing Shandra’s thoughts, but there was no transition or marker indicating that’s what they were, and it took me out of the story. Even something as simple as setting the “I” statements off in italics would have helped.
Even with this flaw, I liked this one enough that when I was done, I immediately purchased book 3 in the series. The characters are compelling enough that I want to know what happens next.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 8, 2025This series is written extremely well. I'm on my third book now. The characters, the countryside and the references to Indian culture are very well done. Excellent books!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 25, 2018Skeletal remains are found by Shandra Higheagle while digging clay on her ranch in the second book of this series. Ryan Greer, a homicide detective for Weippe county is again in charge of the investigation. The corpse is identified as Johnny Clark, a rodeo cowboy who went missing 30 years ago after a lover's quarrel with Crazy Lil, Shandra's employee.
Immediately, Ryan feels Lil is guilty of killing him. Lil refuses to say anything in her defense. Shandra knows Lil could not kill anyone especially one she loves. Shandra sets about looking for information on what happened 30 years ago. In the process, she discovers greed and lies that twist facts around so that everyone is convinced that Lil is guilty instead of the victim. Will Shandra finally convince Ryan they Lil is innocent. She meets an old friend of her father and new information on death. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book and series.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 5, 2024I did not guess the murderer. The romantic aspects to this mystery are quite delightful and I look forward to further mysteries in the series.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 6, 2017Oh my, to lose someone you love is heartbreaking. Thinking for thirty years that person ran out on you hurts even more.
Being called crazy all your life is downright cruel, especially when it isn't true.
Once again Shandra finds a dead body on her land. What will she Do? Who can help her? Of course.....Ryan, the detective to the rescue. If he can't help no one can.
Oh I love this series! I'm reading the third book of the series now. If you haven't already begun to read the series please do so! They are Great!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 21, 2019“Tarnished Remains,” the second book in Paty Jager’s Shandra Higheagle Mysteries, is significantly more polished than “Double Duplicity,” the series opener. Most noticeable is its cleaner and more confident style. The prose isn’t artful yet, but it doesn’t need to be in this genre. Lead characters are better defined too and more appealing.
That’s not the case, unfortunately, with minor figures. Jager’s plot takes us back in time to explain who might have framed Higheagle’s hired hand Crazy Lil for murder. Complicated backstories like this are meat and potatoes to mysteries. But readers shouldn’t have to struggle so much to keep track of multiplying connections: even bit players can be distinct and memorable. (At one point, Shandra Higheagle does mention that she’s confused too—a nice touch.)
- Reviewed in the United States on November 19, 2020A very different kind of setting but very welcomed. I'm always interested in anything Native American, so yes, that added with true murder mystery is a good combination. Waiting on these guys to get it going. Or will the reader be teased to the last book?
