Silence on the Island: A Detective Liam O'Reilly Mystery (DI Liam O'Reilly mysteries Book 7)

From bestselling author, Stewart Giles, comes a new addition to the brilliant Detective Liam O’Reilly series.
January on the island of Guernsey is grim. It's dark and depressing. Detective Liam O'Reilly expected as much.

What O'Reilly didn't bargain for was the eerie silence on the island in the dead of winter.

And when an old lady disappears from a care home and reappears, dead on the grave of a soldier who died 80 years ago, O'Reilly has absolutely no idea what to think.

When more old people are found, murdered amongst the tombs of these dead soldiers, and O'Reilly is met with silence everywhere he turns, he really has no idea why these people had to die.

Then he finally hears the truth.

But it is a truth that will haunt him for the rest of his life.

What readers are saying about SILENCE ON THE ISLAND
Stewart Giles gives the reader so much to think, laugh and peruse about, as well as a top rate murder investigation to solve with a first class ending. Highly recommended. – Carol
A cleverly crafted plot line to keep the grey matter active right through, just how I like it. A wonderful read, highly recommended. – Misfits Farm
It is a perplexing case for Liam and his team and I just wanted to keep reading to find out who was the crook. The characters are a mix of personalities and they really add to the story. There is humour throughout too which is great. – Maureen

After reading English at 3 Universities and graduating from none of them, I set off travelling around the world with my wife, Ann, finally settling in South Africa, where we still live.

In 2013 Ann dropped a rather large speaker on my head and I came up with the idea for a detective series. DS Jason Smith was born. Smith, the first in the series was finished a few months later.

3 years and 8 DS Smith books later, Joffe Books wondered if I would be interested in working with them. As a self-published author, I agreed. However, we decided on a new series – the DC Harriet Taylor Cornwall series.

The Beekeeper was published and soon hit the number one spot in Australia. The second in the series, The Perfect Murder did just as well.

I continued to self-publish the Smith series and Unworthy hit the shelves in 2018 with amazing results. I therefore made the decision to self-publish The Backpacker which is book 3 in the Detective Harriet Taylor series and was published in July 2018.

After The Backpacker I had an idea for a totally new start to a series – a collaboration between the Smith and Harriet thrillers and The Enigma was born. It brings together the brooding, enigmatic Jason Smith and the more level-headed Harriet Taylor. Dropzone followed shortly after and the third in the series, The Raven Girl finished things off.

Miranda is something totally different. What was to be a stand-alone psychological thriller, it is a real departure from anything else I’ve written before. The ending begged for a sequel and, Mistress was born. Medusa completes the Miranda trilogy.

There are now 25 DS Smith books available with many more planned for the future.

I wanted a break from the crime thriller genre so I came up with The Divide - a macabre horror tale of survival, but crime will always be my true love.

A new series featuring Irishman, DI Liam O'Reilly begins with Blood on the Island, and that was followed by ten more mysteries set on the island of Guernsey.

When I'm not writing I love sailing, guitars and jumping out of perfectly good planes. I'm lucky to have a huge lake on my doorstep as well as a world-class skydiving drop zone.

SILENCE ON THE ISLAND opens with a chilling act followed by a disturbing situation and a horrific discovery. High tension is all pervasive as the pages fly by. Riveting chapters will keep you engrossed figuring out the mystery. Following the maze-like twists and turns will keep you guessing until the surprising conclusion you'll never see coming.

SILENCE ON THE ISLAND: A Detective Liam O’Reilly Mystery (DI Liam O’Reilly Mysteries Book #7) by Stewart Giles is another exciting addition to this series. Each crime mystery can be read as a standalone book and while the characters progress in their relationships, it is still easy to follow.

It is a frigid and quiet January on Guernsey Island for DI O’Reilly and the entire team until elderly patients begin turning up dead one-by-one on the graves of past relatives in the war memorial graveyard. When the third victim is taken, he pretends to be dead and survives the night, but is unable to identify the large, but gentle man who took him.

O’Reilly and his team have no leads and no motive, but plenty of suspects. They hope to flush out the killer by claiming to have a description, but they get a lead from a young man, known to the other PCs as a shady character and they are willing to follow any lead at this point in the investigation to stop a killer.

I love this series, DI Liam O’Reilly and his team! The author always has several plot twists and red herrings thrown into each book and this one was no exception. O’Reilly is that grumpy, older friend you just have to love. His interactions with his daughter, girlfriend and adopted stray cat always add levity to the stories, but he is one hundred percent focused on his cases. His team keeps becoming more fully fleshed as characters, also. This is another book in this series that I read much too quickly and once again must wait for more to come, but it is always worth it.

I highly recommend this mystery, this series, and this author!

I have been a fan of Stewart’s work for a few years now. I haven’t quite caught up with everything that he has written, which is something that I hope to rectify fairly soon. Stewart releases several books a year and he often writes quicker than I can read. ‘Silence On The Island’ is the seventh book in the series featuring Detective Inspector Liam O’Reilly and what a fantastic addition to the series it is too. I thoroughly enjoyed reading ‘Silence On The Island’ but more about that in a bit.
As soon as I started to read, I knew that it would be pointless to plan doing anything other than reading for the rest of the day as I knew that I wouldn’t be able to put this amazing book down. Well I must be psychic (or should that be psychopathic?) because that was exactly what happened. The book seemed to develop a hold over me and it was a hold that I wasn’t willing to break. My Kindle wasn’t exactly glued to my hand but it might as well have been because it travelled everywhere with me. I couldn’t bear to miss a single second of the story. The more of the book I read, the more I wanted to read and the quicker the pages seemed to turn. All too quickly I reached the end of ‘Silence On The Island’ and I had to say goodbye to O’Reilly and the rest of the team. I found ‘Silence On The Island’ to be a gripping, tense and dramatic read which certainly kept me guessing and which kept me on the edge of my seat throughout.
‘Silence On The Island’ is superbly written but then I have come to expect nothing less from Stewart Giles. Stewart has one of those writing styles that is easy to get used to and easy to get along with. He certainly knows how to grab the reader’s attention and draw them into what proves to be one hell of a read and then some. For me the story hit the ground running and maintained a fairly fast pace throughout. Reading ‘Silence On The Island’ felt like being on an at times scary and unpredictable rollercoaster ride with several twists and turns along the way. I love the way in which Stewart makes the reader feel as though they are part of the story and at the heart of the action.
In short, I thoroughly enjoyed ‘Silence On The Island’ and I wholeheartedly recommend this book to other readers. I will certainly be reading more of Stewart’s work in the future. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board is a very well deserved 5* out of 5*.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another superb addition to this incredibly likeable series with characters you will love!

The silence of a January night on Guernsey is broken by the sound of a car and a man’s footsteps on gravel. At the military cemetery, the body of elderly Agnes Johnson is laid on the grave of a 21-year-old soldier, Private John Lindley, who died in 1940. The man calls himself The Reconciler. While Agnes’s disappearance is reported by a nurse at her care home, her body is soon discovered by a party of schoolchildren visiting the cemetery. It’s murder all right, and with the electricity turned off and a broken battery inserted in her panic alarm, it looks very much like an inside job by someone who knows the workings of the home. In a strange twist, Agnes turns out to be the daughter of John who died before she was even a year old. As more people go missing from the home and turn up dead, another left at the cemetery, O’Reilly puzzles over the motive and the fact that all their decent suspects have an alibi. Is someone reuniting long lost families in death or is there something far more sinister at work? In the bleakness of a Guernsey winter, will O’Reilly and his loyal team of DC Katie Owen, DS Will Skinner and DC Andy Stone, together with DCI Tom Fish, now happily married to their Supt Anne Hayes, and Head of Forensics DI Jim Peters be able to make sense of this very puzzling case?
As I have come to expect from this great and incredibly likeable series, this book has a clever twisty plot with plenty of red herrings along the way. I myself had lots of theories as the story unfolded. The writing style means that the pages fly past and I can devour each book in a single sitting (the only downside being that they go far too fast!). The characters are all like old friends after the first six stories and form a great team, and O’Reilly’s growing relationship with Victoria is heart-warming to see. I love watching O’Reilly’s slightly devious side as he locks horns with the unscrupulous Fred the Ed! With lots of little bits of humour throughout the story, including O'Reilly’s views on life on the island, his cat Bram and his colleagues, there is a fantastic warmth to the storytelling which makes for a highly entertaining read and balances out the very serious nature of the tale. This has quickly become one of my absolute favourite series and I am looking forward to more stories very soon. Highly recommended. 5*
