Straight Ish White Male: A hilarious heartwarming dual narrative rom-com about a father and son and the girl who tries to come between them (Weekend Rockstars) Kindle Edition

4.8 out of 5 stars 10 ratings

Sean thinks he’s in love with Rhiannon. He’s never been in love before, so he’s not sure.

She thinks he’s her new gay best friend. He’s not entirely sure he isn’t

Martin’s life has been turned upside down by Sean - the prodigal teenage son he hasn’t seen for nearly a decade. Rhiannon - a student working with him over the holidays - says she can help with that.

Rhiannon has her own agenda, and neither Sean or Martin will be happy with the results.

Straight Ish White Male is an exploration of what it means to be a man in the 21st Century seen from two very different perspectives – neatly hidden inside a funny story about bicycles, guitars and unrequited love.

PREVIOUSLY PUBLISHED UNDER THE TITLE 'GAP YEARS'

'It’s that diversity which makes it so enjoyable to read, it is so unpredictable and with Dave’s acerbic tongue it is gritty and honest, this book is everything and more a coming of age story should be' - Ali - The Dragon Slayer

'The writing sweeps you along through the chaos and is immensely entertaining. A quirky, absorbing read. This is another sharply satirical novel from this author about false expectations and the sub-optimal lot of humankind.' - Books Are Cool

'it’s oddly beautiful how Holwill portrays the family as they attempt to piece their lives back together; the novel is impeccably diverse and inclusive, while never once stepping into the realm of bigotry. If you like books that will make you feel something, and where you can relate to the characters, I highly recommend this book.' - Radzy Writes

'The author does a magnificent job of showing the pressures and problems that beset the ordinary people up and down the country in the modern age and every reader will find something to relate to in this story. It is unusual to see male relationships portrayed so honestly and accurately, and I felt really moved by it.' - A Little Book Problem

'All the characters were endearingly quirky train wrecks and profanely talented in the use of creative expletives. I am enamored with the talented scribbler Dave Holwill and unrepentantly covet his peculiar characters, clever wordplay, and highly original vulgarities. He has mad skills.' - Books and Bindings

I enjoyed this book even more than Weekend Rockstars 1 and 2. There are some clever tie-ins with characters from Weekend Rock Stars.
This book couldn’t be more different though. Sean has pitched up on David’s doorstep almost a decade after his mom, David’s swinging ex-wife, hauled him away in a huff. David suddenly has a teenage son living with him. Fortunately, his second wife connects with Sean more than he ever could hope to. Then there’s Rhiannon, an attractive student working with David over the holidays. He’s known her for several summers - she’s a friend. Sean is in love with her, he thinks, but she seems to see him as a gay friend. He’s not sure if he is gay, his dysfunctional relationship with his mother and her ever-changing lovers - mostly female - have seen to that.
Rhiannon’s agenda is really wild, but I still couldn’t help liking her.
David is solid, likable, and has great difficulty relating to his fast maturing son, not helped by not being able to bond with Sean over a few pints, as Sean does not drink, not even coffee or tea.

Then Rhiannon moves in with them…

Gap Years is my second read from Dave Holwill and, as expected, a sharp, satirical novel full of very human experiences with false expectations.

Dave Holwill crafts real, relatable characters, with a bit of dark comedy. This is a story of a father and son, who grow and learn a lot about themselves and each other. It’s not always good news, but they manage to deal, which creates a very moving tale.

A dysfunctional family with beautiful writing and dark comedy, this is a quirky novel that I highly recommend giving a shot. Even if it’s not your style normally, I think Dave Holwill’s writing will draw you in and the characters will see you through to the end.

This could well be Dave Holwill’s best novel so far. He explores the complexity of family relationships in his original, funny, clever and outrageous way. These are characters that are so believable and messy that you will really care about them. ‘Ordinary’ people doing ordinary things in a most extraordinary plot. I really loved it. Definitely my best read in 2019!

I love how Dave Holwill’s characters always feel like real people, even if they only appear briefly. This story was well paced, the gentle humour made it very enjoyable but was balanced by occasional sucker punches of real poignancy that give this book the kind of emotional depth I wish more books could offer. Highly recommended!
