SKIN AND BONES: An emotional and intimate M/M asexual romance (London Love Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 178 ratings

Hugo Burrows has life under control. He has a decent job, a long-term relationship and a flat in Canary Wharf. It’s all under control. It’s just becoming a little problematic trying to hold everything together. Keeping the bruises on his skin hidden away. A smile plastered on his face. Controlling the calories he allows himself to consume. And now his boss is on his back with too many questions, and the grumpy French head chef keeps staring at him like he’s a freak or something.

Everything is under control. It has to be.

Benjamin Desjardins may be the head chef at the Clouds Hotel, but he definitely hasn’t got anything under control. His relationship with his best friend is crumbling, and simply turning up for work seems to automatically cause never-ending chaotic disasters. Yet there is something about the new concierge that has crawled straight under his prickly skin.

Ben doesn’t need more complications in his life. In fact, the last thing he needs is to inconveniently, and reluctantly…fall in love.

SKIN AND BONES can be read as a standalone but is best enjoyed if read after TASTE.

Reader Advisory. This book deals the following topics: eating disorders, OCD, domestic violence and sexual assault, characters falling somewhere on the ace/grey spectrum. Please look yourself and take care if these topics could upset you.
The book has high angst but low steam due to the above topics.

This is not an easy story. Hugo and Ben have had more than their share of trauma, and they are both damaged men. There are some scenes that are difficult to read. Trigger warnings include domestic abuse (some on page) and an eating disorder, among others.
Having said that, the story of their road to recovery and to each other is lovely. As this is a Soames book, there was never any doubt that 1) there would be an HEA, and 2) there would be a cast of well developed, compassionate supporting characters. I really loved Hugo's struggle and when he finally took charge of his life, I cheered for him.
As a side note, I adore the author's covers. I love the pencil sketches and really feel that they enhance the book. Unlike 90% of what I read, I find myself going back to the cover multiple times throughout my read.

This is hurt-comfort on a next level. Sophia writes this trope as one of the best!
Both Hugo and Benjamin have issues and have been hurt, for different reasons, in the past. As for Hugo, in a very recent past.
They both work at the Clouds Hotel, where the former London Love books were set as well, and it is apparent that Sophia knows a lot about the Hotel business. The way she writes about it, makes it very real - the customers and their demands, the stress, things that come with the job but aren't in the job description, the daily hectic of a running business.
Hugo is the concierge trying very hard to prevent his life from falling apart. He is good at what he does, but it's harder and harder to hide his scars and bruises and the fact that he suffers from an eating disorder. The French head chef, Benjamin, eyes him with curiosity but his stares make Hugo uncomfortable at first. Until Benjamin, among some other members of the staff, becomes his best chance at survival and he appears to be very different from the man Hugo thought he was.
Slowly they get to know and trust each other and I loved the sweet and emotional dynamics between the two of them. Benjamin's protectiveness and Hugo's growing trust to be with another man, a man who won't hurt him, is beautiful to witness.

I don't have any triggers, but I can imagine this must be a hard read for some. It deals with a lot of heavy topics, so please read the warnings before proceeding.
Despite the fact that I'm not easily triggered, reading about Hugo's eating disorder was as close as I've ever came when it comes to a disturbed feeling of anxiety. I have suffered from it myself years ago as well. Which I recovered from well enough. No, it was harder because my youngest daughter has only been in recovery for about 6 months now. She's doing really well, and though I don't really fear a relapse, it's still hard to let go and not watch her with a magnifying glass. I need to trust her, but knowing where she came from, as a mother I can tell you that it's not that easy. So I fully understood Hugo's sister's worries!

There's zero steam in this book. Benjamin is A-sexual and Hugo, well, he's been through so much it only felt natural that sex wasn't all that appealing to him anymore. But they worked so well, with all the cuddling and kissing, with all the emotional support they were giving one another. These guys were talking about things, and that was very refreshing!

The London series is one of my favorite series. It's so well written and I had been hoping for a new addition and once again Sophia does not disappoint. My favorite book is still Taste (Mark & Finn's book) but it was good to see so much of Mark and Finn again in this story. Technically this book can be read as a stand alone but the enjoyment will be so much better if you read Taste first. It gives you a better understanding of the dynamics, and well, why not? It's just a great series to dive into!

This was my first book by this author, but it certainly won’t be the last. I loved the way she brought Hugo and Ben to life. Their stories were just so heartbreaking!! The pair captivated me from the very start and I am so glad they found each other!! Already preordered the next book in the series!!

I’m a huge fan of this author’s work mainly because the characters are always immersed in dealing with their complicated feelings. This crew of characters in this series is the ultimate in found family who are also co-workers with a co-dependency twist. The story totally sucked me in.

A really compelling story, hard to read at times but beautifully written and told. First, the setting is very well done. The Clouds Hotel feels like a real work place. It’s full of life, really interesting, and the staff all in each other’s business. I also loved the tension in the story. Especially in the early chapters, you can really feel how precarious life is for Hugo. He keeps to himself but his colleagues notice something is off, especially Head Chef Ben. So, you’re just waiting for it to blow up or fall apart, which it of course does. Both Ben and Hugo are dealing with their own struggles. Hugo goes home every night to his abusive boyfriend, has OCD, and his eating disorder is becoming harder to hide. Ben feels quite lonely in his life. He’s forever changed by the a brain injury he suffered in college. There is so much to work through for Ben and Hugo. One of the more interesting aspects of Ben and Hugo’s story is Ben’s unconventional relationship with best friend Mark. Their friendship has kept Ben going for a long time but they need to figure out how to allow room for others- Finn and Hugo in particular. A beautifully written emotional and ultimately uplifting read.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.

I didn't squeal with pleasure in the previous books, but I liked them enough. Before I started reading Ben and Hugo's book, I went and re-read Mark and Finn's book (the previous one). That's why I remember the dynamics of the last book. I don't understand some of the things that come up in this book.
I was excited about Ben and Hugo's book because I read a couple of positive reviews, but unfortunately this book did not give me the vibes I needed.

Liked: 1) The behind the scenes of the hotel was interesting to read.
    2) Yes, they are cruel, in my opinion, but not trivial or fictitious problems.

What I didn’t like: 1) There are too many troubles and psychological and physical traumas for each of the characters.
    2) It is unclear where love came from. Just poof and it appeared.
    3) Unhealthy dynamic between Mark and Ben, which subsequently completely ruins the experience of the last book and demeans relationships in this book. (this is one of the most disappointing moments).

So... this book sat in my Kindle for a few week before I found the courage to tackle it. You see, I had read the ubiquitous trigger warnings when I first downloaded the book, and was, quite frankly, afraid to read it. However, Sophia Soames is by far one of my favourite authors, definitely one of the top three, and I had to find the emotional wherewithal to start reading.
Okay, there are no spoilers here, none at all. And I will admit to engaging in warp speed to read through the tough scenes. As difficult as they were, they needed to be in the story, and I applaud Soames for creating a story of recovery from fear, trauma, violence, and self-hate, a story that profiles Hugo and Ben’s journey, leaving me with a huge smile from ear to ear.
It’s both a difficult but worthy love story, and I hope you love it as much as I did.
