Review

Praise for the Starship's Mage Series

"An entertaining space opera. Damien isn't your usual hero, with bulletproof abs and square chin. He is short and of slight build, but his ethics set him apart. Damien does his absolute best to do what's right and save people in his care, even if he has to stand up to Mage-king of Mars himself. I own this series and I very much enjoyed it."

- Ilona Andrews, #1 NYT Bestselling Author

"This series has everything! Action, character, heart, and mystery woven masterfully together in Stewart's fascinating universe where science and magic stand on equal footing. I love it!"

- Jason M. Hough, NYT Bestselling Author of Zero World

"What seems like an implausible mix of SF and fantasy at first somehow combines into a thoroughly engaging space opera read that manages to be fun while keeping the tension level high. I'm ready for the next."

- Cat Rambo, Former President of SFWA

I’m speechless. There’s so many twists. The foreshadowing was a red herring! Even with me saying that you still won’t get it till you read this! There’s so many circles hovering over everything that the question mark is not a straight answer! Just wow! Bravo! That was master class twists! I read a lot. A lot a lot. I thought after book 2-4 that I was seeing behind the veil to understand what was going on. I thought they were good but not as good as book one as things seemed obvious. Especially with the reveals of the hands I thought was simple foreshadowing. Man is it deeper than that. The direction you think you’re smart at picking up on is not what you think. And I’m even wondering if the thing I’m thinking is even legit as I was thrown for a loop! That doesn’t happen often and even I was blindsided! Wow. So cool. I can’t wait to keep going but am disheartened that every book I read brings me closer to the end of what’s released. So it’s super bittersweet. Awesome as I have I think 8 books left out. But I’ve devoured 5 books in less than three days. Soon I will be caught up and super sad that I won’t have any left to read. The good news is it’s ongoing so I have more out in the future and that hope keeps me going strong in my reading pace. So epic. Someone make a show out of this series! Man the space battles would be so cool! Epic series!

I received an ARC in exchange for a unbiased review.

I want to start by stating that this book is another action packed instalment of the Adventures of Damien Montgomery. It’s fast paced, well written and I’m fairly sure I read it in a single sitting.

But it’s not going to be my favourite book.

    ****** POTENTIAL SPOILERS ***************

For me this book was a bit like Harry Potter - Order of the Phoenix. It’s where politics invades our hero's world, imposes on it and it is to our hero’s detriment. Instead of “detention with Delores” we have meetings with the Council.

But in some ways Harry is better off. Harry has Ron and Hermione, whilst Damien has staff. Instead of these relationships being further developed in this book, we got a new member. If Samara appears in the next and any future books, then her introduction and development here is excellent ground work, but I still think an opportunity got missed.

Harry gets holidays at The Burrow. Damien doesn't even have Friday night drinks! His predecessor Alanna Steele liked to share a drink and discuss events. I think with what Damien has ahead of him sharing a beer with him companions would benefit them all. Our author uses this very technique in his Castle Federation books - Kyle Roberts has his own private stash of beer on his every ship to share with his various officers whilst discussing the thorny issues of command or simply shooting the breeze. Let's give Damien a supply of boutique beer and a small amount of down time to use it. Because Damien is fast becoming a concern with his “all work and no breaks” attitude.

By the end of this book I needed Damien to have a win. Not just acceptance or acknowledgement but a solid For The Win. And for me, I didn’t get it. This book was repeated kicks to my hero and for me, he never got to struggle back up and deliver that knock out punch. We're still chasing the Keepers raison d’être. I still don’t have a solid lock on the bad guy. Suspicion and supposition - yes. But solid lock - no. At the end of this book I wanted at least one of those.

******* END OF POTENTIAL SPOILERS ************

To nit pick - this ARC has typos and grammatical errors. Things like uncomfortable when it should have been uncomfortably to make the sentence work. There are other things. None were enough to take me out of the story but I did notice them. I’m going to assume the book under goes a tidy up before final release.

I still have a complaint about Damien’s height. In our opening chapter with Damien he’s referred to as “diminutive". I know he’s short, but we’re five books in now. Can we stop defining Damien by his height? He’s one of the most powerful mages there is. He’s well respected across the cosmos. He’s intelligent. He’s tenacious. He’s cool under fire. He stands for those who can’t. He's honorable. My point is he’s a lot of things other than short. I feel like Damien is undercut every time he's ’s reduced to a height chart. (End rant.)

I will be buying this book when it is released as I want to support this author and this series. I want Damien to win! Whilst I’m looking forward to my next adventure with Damien Montgomery, I won't mind if the author takes a little more than his usual time to write it. We're getting into complicated events and I really want the next book to deliver.

Despite all that I’ve written above, I did read this book in a single sitting. It did keep me glued to the end. I may not be rushing back to re-read this particular book but I will be rushing to read the next instalment.

Judgement of Mars is book five in the Starship Mage series and it does not disappoint. It is filled with the nail biting adventure that readers of this series have come to expect. What I loved most about this book in the series, however, is the way the author has drawn together events from earlier books in the series and shown that they were not individual isolated events, but parts of a larger, more complex tapestry. We learn more about old enemies and about the very heart of Mars.

From the beginning, the best thing about this series has been its protagonist, Damien Montgomery. He is a man not driven by a lust for power, but rather a code of honor that demands he be prepared to sacrifice himself for those he swore an oath to protect. He is not a man without uncertainties and fears, but one that confronts and moves past them. Who can be unmoved when he says, "I speak for Mars. Will you listen?" It gets me every time. As with all the books in this series, it ends with the threads of a new beginning for the next book in the series.

The universe Stewart has created is somewhat reminiscent of those classic science fiction writers like Marion Zimmer Bradley and Andre Norton. More than anything, however, the Starship Mage series reminds me of my very favorite science fiction series, Lois McMaster Bujold's Vorkosigan saga. Damien Montgomery and Miles Vorkosigan are kindred spirits.

I received an advanced reader copy of Judgement of Mars in return for an honest review and I liked this book so much that I turned around and purchased a copy as soon as it became available on Amazon because I want Glynn Stewart to be able to continue writing books like this one. As long as he continues to speak for Mars, I will continue to listen...and buy his books.

Unfortunately someone is killing the Keepers and is destroying anything in their way. Council of the Protectorate wants Damien’s resignation and only the Judgment of Mars (paper from Faolan's Pen Publishing Inc) can save them and Damien from assassination.I really enjoyed rereading these early books in the series.

Judgment of Mars is the fifth installment of Damien Montgomery’s story and I have to say I’m a fan and I really enjoyed reading it. This is another good installment of Damien’s story and I think the writing delivers a good balance between the pace and depth of the story which keeps me interested in the characters and their fate. I am definitely looking forward to the next book and the Starship's Mage has become one of my favourite Sci-Fi series.

1.0 out of 5 stars Brutto libro dopo 4 ottimi

I enjoyed this very much. There were a couple of proofreading errors in the form of quotation marks that weren't closed. I am also left wondering how kleenex and Ford have survived into the 25th century, but there were some good twists and turns in the story and a rather impressive ending. A difficult book to put down. I look forward to the next series set in this universe, which I believe is about the unarcana rebellions.
