Summerwind Magick: Making Witches of Salem (The Summerwind Series) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 37 ratings

A live TV meltdown. A haunted island. A second chance… with a side of spells.

When beloved actress Carolyn Sohier spectacularly loses her lunch—and her dignity—on national television, she retreats to a quiet island off the coast of Maine to salvage what’s left of her career… and her sanity.

But Summerwind Island has secrets of its own. The locals whisper of witches, a ghost with a flair for drama, and long-buried magick that refuses to stay quiet.

Carolyn just wants to finish filming her new movie in peace. Instead, she finds herself tangled in Salem’s rising magical tensions, dodging protestors, coven drama, a mysterious legacy she never asked for… and a sapphic spark with a sharp-tongued islander who might help her find the kind of connection she’s never dared to imagine.

This witty, heart-filled prequel to Tim on Broadway is perfect for fans of:

  • The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches – for cozy magic and found-family warmth

  • Payback’s a Witch – for sharp wit, witchy politics, and delightfully messy characters

  • The Rules of Magic – for lyrical prose, emotional depth, and exploration of identity

  • In the Ravenous Dark – for ghostly surprises, LGBTQ+ threads, and supernatural complications

  • The Nature of Witches – for seasonal settings, personal awakening, and magic tied to place

  • Her Majesty’s Royal Coven – for its feminist edge and contemporary magical worldbuilding

Full of laugh-out-loud moments, magical misfires, and a heroine you’ll root for even when she’s falling apart, Summerwind Magick is a modern witch’s tale about claiming your power—and embracing unexpected, sapphic possibility along the way.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Rick Bettencourt has truly outdone himself on this one. The characters have so much life to them. The story has so much originality and is filled with twists and turns. I found myself reading reading through the night, through appointments and through conversations that I was supposed to be having with others. I’m not one to give anything away by telling the story, that’s what the blurb is for. I fell in love with Carolyn, Michael, Michael, Becky, Bernie, Dereck, Viola and yes, even Food. Mr. Bettencourt mixes in humor along with the occult some paranormal and just some plain old Love into the story and kept me wanting more after it ended. This story fits seamlessly in with his others featuring the same characters along with me ones that it was such a joy to read the back stories on Carolyn and the others. I recommend this book along with the he has written to anyone looking for some quality reading for a change. READ THIS BOOK!!!

I really enjoyed this story by Rick Bettencourt. It's the first time reading his work and I will certainly read more. As a fan of witches, this story is that and more. The story draws you in after the first few chapters. The characters we meet help to create a magical journey filled with emotion, fears, (past and present),and witchcraft. The book offers us a glimpse into the entertainment business, witchcraft and stunning locales. I would recommend it to anyone looking for something light but substantial. You will laugh, cry and enjoy meeting these delightful characters bound together by friendship.

Florida author Rick Bettencourt leaps into a new genre with SUMMERWIND MAGICK - the occult/thriller/suspense arena - and does so quite successfully. Perhaps he is giving a bow to his early years of living in Massachusetts and his favorite city – Salem – as that is where the major action takes place Rick has joined an enlarging spotlight of fellow LGBT writers - a circle stage front that includes such names as David Sedaris, Edmund White, Felice Picano, Robert Rodi, Michael Cunningham, David Leavitt, Alan Hollinghurst, Colm Tóibín, et al - and comes on very strong with his books TIM ON BROADWAY, ONE NIGHTSTAND, MARKETING BEEF and BUILDING US. Though there is much talk about this master of the social media and though he has enjoyed success with his earlier works PAINTING WITH WINE and the collection of stories in NOT SURE BOYS, this novel places him solidly in the company of the specially gifted young writers of gay fiction. All true and building - he now is responsible for publishing some very promising fellow writers. Rick's gift for significant writing continues to swell.

But can he succeed in this new paranormal genre? He already has proved that he can with SOULBOUND, so step aside from doubt and just enjoy this excursion into entertainment, stage fright, and competition married very well indeed to sorcery and covens of witches.

Rick’s synopsis is solid: ‘ A bully’s been tormenting her for years. A witch is the medium. An actress the victim. After Carolyn wrecks her singing career, she and her best friend Michael set out to New England for a spellbinding adventure—a complex brew of suspense, drama, and the supernatural spiced with a dose of humor and fun. Rising talent Carolyn Sohier dreams of breaking into the spotlight and achieving the kind of stardom her father—a deceased hippy-musician—could never realize. But severe stage fright relegates her to singing backup and making cheesy television commercials. Carolyn can’t seem to tap into the energy trapped deep inside her and show her talent to the world. Self-doubt plagues her worse than the demon she vomits up on stage at Radio City Music Hall. Now, the creature follows her around the set of her first feature film—Witches of Salem—being shot on location in New England. Salem resident Rebecca Farney longs for acceptance in the Official Witch of Salem’s coven and recognized as a real witch. Despite the community’s protest, Rebecca can’t pass up a chance to be part of the movie and turn Witches of Salem into a camp hit like her favorite television show Bewitched. Perhaps casting a spell on the film’s actors and crew could win her recognition from the Salem coven…Michael, Carolyn’s best friend, has spent a lifetime protecting the star and bolstering her ego. Yet all the money he and his partner—a software tycoon from Seattle—have, can’t shield her from what’s about to happen…’

And so Rick Bettencourt expands his influence and there naturally is applause! Grady Harp, November 17

    SUMMERWIND MAGICK
This is one of those rare books, which has the reader up all night because every page brings you further into the characters, the shared back story slowly becomes clear, and the quirky women grow into their own personas. Mostly set in New England, there is no resemblance to the Salem Witch hunts you read about in school.
Rick Bettencourt is one of my ‘one-click’ authors, although, this Is a departure from his usual themes, this story does not disappoint. The chapter structures are different and give a wink and a hint at the contents. While there, are inferences to witches, these are modern women with unusual skills, computer savvy and eBay users. Mix in Hollywood types, film memories and music from the 70’s, broken hearts, teenage secrets, old wives tales, island living, and cherished recipes. The perfect combination to intrigue a reader into turning the pages as fast as possible. Perhaps a little of the MAGICK comes through the pages. Guaranteed laughs and a few tears as the story unfolds. This is simply not to be missed and will become a re-read.

I don't understand the Seth/Derrick connection. But doesn't matter because this book had me wondering what's next. So many characters to keep track of, which I don't normally like. This is not what I would call an easy read. It is a worthwhile read. Entertaining. Characters were great. Terrance didn't get much time but the crap he puts up with from Michael makes him a hero. I was a tad disappointed Seth wasn't rotting in the underworld. I'm not very forgiving. Having said that, you can tell the author successfully pulled me into the story. As soon as I start having strong emotions towards fictional characters/situations, I know the author has done their job.
