A totally captivating read! Once I started this book, there was no getting away from the situation of Alice. She saves a man from jumping off a bridge, only to realize that her compassion would lead to problems. The unstable man she saves sees a "link" between them, and he becomes her stalker.

There were so many complex and intriguing aspects to this book. At first, my attention was devoted to the plight of the "foreigner" in a society. Alice tries for help from the police, only to realize that, as a British woman living in Switzerland, language problems worked strongly against her. She tried but could not achieve language dexterity. The fact that she was a "foreigner" - and worse yet, one who wasn't proficient in the language - always made her as an outcast in the village in which she lived. Reading this gave me an increased awareness (and sensitivity) to how difficult it would be for an outsider, a foreigner who did not speak the language, to manage.

Alice's attempts at speaking the local language were clumsy, although her two sons and her husband managed well. And this proved to be a serious problem for Alice in her attempts to explain the stalker threat to the police. She was trying to obtain lawful attention to a dangerous situation--a stalker whose spiraling attention would drive her close to insanity. Yet, the police were rude and argumentative.

And Alice was often alone. As the threat from her stalker was increasing, her husband's job demanded more and more foreign travel. When he was home, he didn't seem to really grasp the nature of the problem that so anguished Alice, as she strived to protect her two sons and the stability of the family.

Another part of the story that was so intriguing: Alice was a competitive runner. Besides her family, running was an important part of her life. There were wonderful and authentic looks into the life of a person dedicated to her sport. She trained for marathons and had run successfully. And her sport served as a link to friendship, which was so precious to her, in her outside position. And then, after training and traveling to a distant city to run, she finds herself face-to-face with her tormentor. He had scrutinized her life to such an extend that he always knew where she would be--and he would be there too. The results of her marathon were disastrous.

Alice was left with nowhere to turn. At one point, much later in the story, she asks her husband if there is any chance of ever returning to her England. But no -- for Alice, there was no escape. She's finally driven to extremes to protect her family from a man who was turning toward violence in his obsession.

Outstanding debut novel! Wonderfully well-written, totally convincing, frightening and disturbing. I recommend "Strangers on a Bridge" with 5-STARS-plus.

This book had a great premise, but the main character did one stupid thing after another. If she had confided in her husband, it still could have worked, there was no need for that “domestic tension” to move the plot along. I liked this family and the setting in Switzerland.

I really enjoyed this book. I sat down & read it cover to cover in a day. It is very well written, the story keeps you intrigued all the way through, with many thought provoking layers. I loved the descriptions of the Swiss countryside. It made me miss it so much & I could visualize it as I read. This sort of thing is certainly plausible & the characters really drew me in. I can completely understand how this turns out, unfortunately. It happens all the time. A very creative novel & the type of book worth a lot of discussion. I agree it would be a great Book Club book or even read in a college level classroom. I am very proud of Louise and look forward to finding more of her work. ** Team LAS** :)

Although the depiction of Manfred the stalker was quite accurate from a psychological perspective, I couldn’t have been more disappointed by the main character, Alice. A reasonably educated woman was made to look like a complete idiot in my opinion. The extent of her deception was really unbelievable. I don’t think I’ll be reading other works by this author.

A gripping thriller, making it a fast read, and a page turner until the very end. It drew me in from the first sentence, and is a very good ‘book club’ book that would probably elicit a great conversation, and at times truly scary! Mangos did a fantastic job with a disturbing subject, as well as created true suspense as the main character "Alice" was in her home, off on walks, and navigating a serious situation. Her writing was so complete that it stayed with me after each reading, and gave me much food for thought on the grim realities of suicide and stalking.

What would you do if you saw a stranger on a bridge looking like they're about to jump? For Alice Reed the answer was simple, she had to try and help talk the man down but little did she realise the consequences for her and her family that one good deed would have. For what follows in the weeks and months that follows is truly disturbing as Manfred turns from a sad, depressed man into a psychotic stalker.

At first I really felt for Alice as her good Samaritan act came back to haunt her. She thought that she had done the right thing by taking Manfred to a nearby hospital and reporting the incident to local authorities, but living in a tranquil village in the middle of the Swiss countryside she struggled to get people to understand her, as she doesn't speak the German Swiss fluently, or believe her when the actions of Manfred start to take a sinister turn. But then later on I found myself shaking my head as I couldn't believe some of the things she was doing, surely she could see that these weren't the actions of a rational woman, wife and mother but it's hard to imagine what you would do in that position when you want to protect everyone you love.

The setting for this storyline in the Swiss alps was simply sublime, it's the perfect backdrop for the disturbing drama that was playing out as who could believe something so terrifying was happening somewhere so beautiful. Even though I've never been to Switzerland, through her descriptive writing Louise Mangos really gives her readers a glimpse of what it must be like to take a run or hike through the picturesque scenery throughout the different seasons, but then add into the mix paranoia and fear and you get a whole different atmosphere completely.

Strangers on a Bridge was a truly impressive, accomplished debut novel from an up and coming crime writer. It had me completely caught up in the tense drama from the moment I started reading till I finished reading the final sentence. And even though the ending was not the one I was expecting when I first started reading, it turned out to be simply the right ending for everything that had played out before my eyes. I wait with eager anticipation as to what we readers can expect from Louise Mangos next as if this is any indication of her style of writing I'll be hitting pre-order as soon as it's available.

Alice does a good thing - but her life will never be the same again. The man she saves from death makes sure of that.
The lovely Alpine scenery and the authentic descriptions of life in a small Swiss village make Strangers on a Bridge a thriller with a difference. I hoped all the way through that things would turn out well for Alice and her family, but at the same time I was thinking, oh no, stop, don't do that...

3.0 out of 5 stars well written but drags on a bit

I thought this was a very well written story with authentic characters. I appreciated that the villain(s) weren't written as over-the-top madmen twirling their 'staches. The story could have been 'real'. I did think however that the storytelling needed to be tightened up. It was turgid and repetitive; I found I was just waiting to get to the end, which I thought was predictable but well written. Food for thought from a talented writer.

4.0 out of 5 stars An addictive psychological thriller, with a chilling edge!

What would you do if you found someone who was about to take their own life by jumping off a bridge? You’d want to help, right? Well, that is exactly what Alison did and she very quickly lived to regret it!

Manfred is eternally grateful to Alison for saving his life but now he seems to think they have a connection and that they are destined to be together. Initially, Alison just thinks he’s a lost soul who needs a bit of help, however, she soon realises that her friendliness was a mistake and she has inadvertently encouraged this man’s obsession with her.

We follow Alison as she tries to shake off her stalker, but with the police and her husband not taking her seriously she’s at a loss for what to do! With some unexpected twists and turns along the way this really was an enthralling read.

The first chapter is fantastic and hooks you in straight away, making you want to read on to see what happens next. The book overall is not too fast-paced which I think suits this type of story just perfectly. I liked Alison as a character although she did make some rather silly decisions. I found that I felt sorry for her and got frustrated with her in equal measure. You can understand why she does what she does at times and I’m sure in her shoes many of us would have made the same decisions/mistakes, but as much as I wanted to shout at her at times, I mainly wanted to shout at those that wouldn’t listen to her or help her.

The description Louise uses is just wonderful and makes the book so atmospheric. I have been to Switzerland once but not to the alps, this book makes me want to go as it just sounds so beautiful. I had such a clear picture in my head of the setting all the way through.

This is a really great debut and I look forward to reading more by Louise Mangos.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the best psychothriller of the year
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 31, 2020
I read this book quite quickly, wanting to know how it would all end. Alice Reed is out for a jog in the Swiss Alps where she lives when she sees a man about to jump from a bridge. She manages to talk him out of it and then because she is cold and the bus into town is an hour wait she takes him to her house and leaves him on the porch while she gets changed in order to drive him to the hospital. So far so good... perhaps not the smartest move, bringing a stranger to her house, but I got where she was coming from. I could picture myself making a similar bad choice, but perhaps not anymore. After this the story and Alice as a character becomes less likeable. The man she saved starts stalking her and then instead of telling her husband and the police everything she filters what she shares and yet is surprised that no one takes her seriously when she claims he is stalking her. She makes many choices I would never make and perhaps it is not so much the stalker that is driving a wrench in her marriage, but Alice's way of dealing with it.

A lot more happens in this book and Alice makes a lot of choices that I think were dumb and not sure why she made some of them. The main good thing is how this book ended. I liked it although I didn't get full closure, but it was believable, which I hadn't been counting on.
