See These Bones: A Post-Apocalyptic Superhero Novel (The Post-Break World: The Murder of Crows Book 1) Kindle Edition
Now a 2020 Readers' Favorite Gold Medal Winner in the Fiction - Dystopia genre
Some superheroes want to save the world. Damian is just hoping to save himself.
In the post-Break world of superpowers, necromancy is the one gift nobody wants. Everyone knows what happens to Crows; they go mad and they go bad. That's the story of infamous mass murderers like Crimson Death, Gravedigger, and Sally Cemetery. It's also the story of David Jameson, an otherwise unremarkable man who came home one day and killed his wife, orphaning their five-year-old son, Damian.
Thirteen years later, Damian has inherited more than just grey eyes and a beak of a nose from his father. He too is a Crow, doomed to become a killer unless he can find a way to avoid the violent madness endemic to his powers. When a Finder offers enrollment at Los Angeles' Academy of Superheroes, he jumps at the chance, believing training could be the key to changing his fate. His classmates despise him, the majority of his teachers want him expelled, and his mom's ghost hasn't said a word since reappearing when he was nine, but Damian isn't the kind to give up. He's going to take control of his destiny or die in the process.
It's that or end up like his father.
See These Bones is a post-apocalyptic, superhero, coming-of-age ghost story... with expletives.

They're the next generation of Capes, training at the Academy of Heroes to one day defend the Free States.
Murderers. Villains. Madmen.
There are many words to describe Necromancers, but superhero isn't one of them. 18-year-old Damian Banach's only talent is the power that's driving him insane. Yet somehow Damian just became the Academy of Heroes' newest student.
Accompanied by his mom's ghost, he'll have to survive the Academy (and his fellow classmates), while battling the insanity that doomed every Crow before him.
Superhero school just got scary.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 23, 2025I would like to give this more stars. It's the best super powers novel I've read, ever. Compelling, emotional, funny, grim, surprising, a terrific protagonist, a stunning battle, and a great ending. I'm really grateful to have discovered it when the rest of the trilogy and associated books are available--no waiting!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 12, 2025If you are anything like me, you will come close to DNFing this in the first book. I urge you not to. The story is good and the telling gets progressively better as the series goes along.
Flaws: I came very, very close to DNFing after the scene introducing the teachers. Early in the telling, the author has a bad habit of ruining scenes or lessening their impacts by spoiling them. For instance, in the introduction to the teachers instead of leaving us with a group of interesting characters we then watch develop in their relationship with the main character he spoils it by telling us immediately how they will turn out and that took me completely out of the scene. I promise you, this dies down as the books progress. There is a tendency at odd occasions to puncture building expectations so that when things go wrong later they are no surprise and lack the impact they could have. This also fades as the books go along.
Pros: This is an excellent story with a flawed 'hero.' We watch as this man is shaped into something that is terrible but also mitigated through his life into something better. And, I'm not spoiling it any further than that.
Mids: It starts as a kid with powers goes off to school and is shaped story. Of course, as in all these stories he has something that sets him apart which he struggles to overcome both externally and internally. By the end, it's different and the finale (thank God) is not just another confrontation of some sort having to do with the school.
Rating: The rating I gave is for the entire series: Individually, I would give the first book a 3, the second book a 4, and the third a 4.5.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 21, 2024How have I never heard about these books before? How have I never heard about Mr. Tullbane before? This is one of the best written fantasy, post-apocalyptic novels I have ever read. A little bit like if Watchmen and the Boys had a baby. Seriously, if you are a fan of this genre, I highly recommend this series. The protagonist is dark and cynical and has had a really rough start in life, but at no point does the darkness become too much for the reader. At least not for this reader. The breaking of the fourth wall is strategically used and flows very nicely with the rest of the novel. Also, the author does such a wonderful job of introducing this world to us in a show not tell kind of way. The overuse of exposition is one of my biggest pet peeves. This is an amazing start to this series, and I can't wait to read what happens next.

I have a new favorite indie author. I'm obsessed. Hero is not the first word that comes to mind when you hear Necromancer. Yet, Damian Banach is the first "Crow" to be admitted into the Academy of Heroes.
What I liked:
I love this dystopic take on the superhero genre. Nothing is shiny and perfect. Being a superhero has definite drawbacks which makes the whole thing interesting on its own. Damian is the first necromancer admitted into the academy. No of his classmates want him to be there thinking that he would go crazy and kill them all, but eventually, he begins to make friends despite his best efforts to do otherwise. The character arc was really well done. I was rooting for Damian throughout the story. The world-building was done very well. Excellent editing and story structures. Just well done all around.
What I didn't like:
I loved the whole thing. There is nothing that I didn't like about this story.
Overall:
If you like superhero stories, you will love this one. It's original, gritty, and just a lot of fun to read. I have put the sequel on my TBR.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great read
If youre a fan of superhero stories you should read this. I really liked Damian as the mc, he had the right balance of traits, he is good but not a pushover, has pride and attitude but not obnoxious. I liked the pacing and it stuck the landing. Its a good book and an easy recommendation.

5.0 out of 5 stars What an amazing surprise
I hadn't heard of this book but saw it recommended on Reddit so decided to give it a go. And I am blown away by how good it is. Great characters, action and story. Lots of mysteries as well. Will be recommending this to everybody. Can't wait to read the rest of the series

5.0 out of 5 stars Best book of 2022
This was a refreshing take on post apocalyptic fiction with super heroes and black hats. The world building is incredible as is the fleshed out characters. Great action, laugh out loud moments and gritty drama. Can't wait for book 2

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning. I don't really have all the words for it.
I've burned through the trilogy now and can absolutely say READ THESE DAMNED BOOKS. They take every boring trope of young-hero-discovers-hes-magic-goes-to-magic-school-and-saves-the-world and beats them to death, laughing maniacally as they do it. The tale is dark and full of woe but it's also beautiful and heart-warming and cruel and caring. Every teenager should read it and every old adult like me should too. Cleverly written and cleverly witty; the humanity at the core of the story shines through. Read the damn book. It'll stay with me for a long time and I wouldn't have it any other way.
And I cried at the end, not because of the ending but because the ride was over. And that's the sign of a damn good book.
Read the damn book

5.0 out of 5 stars Well written and great characters.
The over-use of foreshadowing and/or broadcasting future events may have been unnecessary, but the characters were relatable and distinct, and the story made sense - things I am having trouble finding in many other Kindle Unlimited books…
