Stranger Than Fan Fiction: A friends to lovers, hidden identity, epistolary romcom (Unlucky in Love Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 882 ratings

Rule number one of former child stardom - never search yourself online in the midst of a pity party because you'll inevitably do something stupid.

Case in point, me falling for a writer on a different continent who has no idea that I'm the star of her fictional fantasies.

I can’t stop thinking about Kate Dubois even as we talk every day. I should have told her the truth of who I was before things got this far. In my defense, celebrity comes with a lot of baggage and it is nice to be seen (figuratively) for who I really am.

Now, I have a chance to actually meet her in person and there’s no way I can pass that up.

Just one harmless look at the woman who has changed my life and I can go back to hiding in English countryside obscurity.

What’s the worst that could happen?

Stranger Than Fan Fiction, is a full-length romantic comedy, can be read as a standalone, and is the first book in the Unlucky in Love Series.

My fav so far this year!
I take my 6 star reviews very seriously. I have very few so far. But let me tell you, Piper can write a 6 star book. Stranger Than Fan Fiction is about a child star turn (hot) adult that is overcoming an addiction & essentially never leaves his home. He adopts some cute chickens and looks himself up online (best mistake ever). He finds Kate, who writes fan fiction about his show, but as if the characters were adults. (If you’ve ever read fan fiction, then you know. Back in my day, it was of course fan fiction about NSYNC. Not shocked I now read smut). ANYWAYS… He ends up emailing her and they exchange emails for *TWO* years and the entire time, she doesn’t know he’s the real REAL Charlie she grew up idolizing. They finally get to meet in LA for a reunion show in which they ask Kate to host and interview the casts. Of course, she eventually figures outs it’s the real REAL Charlie. The 3rd act breakup broke me but thankfully didn’t last long. The entire book was swoony but not overly swoony. You really got to see their relationship grow over emails. He finally got his hot head out of his arse (he’s British, okay?) and won her back, with the help of his cast mates.

Firstly, I don’t think that there are enough celebrity romances written. So whenever I come across one, I pounce on it. Inevitably, I’m left with a sort of unsatisfied feeling. Not so in this wonderful novel. Piper Sheldon has written a cracker of a story! Amazing character, development and depth, and funny, comedic moments and swoon-worthy romance. A bit of spice is the cherry on top. Extremely well written and super engaging. I’m looking forward to reading the others in this series.

I mean this was a really FUN book. It’s such a unique premise with a jaded former famous actor struggling with his addictions and past connects with a fanfic writer and they form a friendship online. I tend to LOVE epistolary never met in person romances. I love the angst of them figuring out who the other is. And I did love this one. It was very good in some aspects but the writing had some strange typos (simple ones don’t bother me but I mean they confused who was speaking at times etc) and needed to have a bit more polishing to lend the story more depth. I loved the letters and characters. It just seemed rushed in some aspects and had a few loose ends I wanted more tied up. Slight tiny spoiler: I also didn’t like at all how when they did figure out who the other was there wasn’t a convo or revelation really before they whisked her off to a club and then proceeded to have a dark corner introduction to their physical relationship. In public. Without really discussing their history or really even having a kiss first. It felt so out of left field. And rushed. And unlike the characters at all. Later in the night Charlie reverts back to his character but that whole segment just didn’t fit to me.
Otherwise I really liked it. Charlie was fun with his British estate full of sadness chickens and cranky housekeeper and cheeky humor.

There’s one topic/tw I missed in the blurb and other reviews. This book contains a relationship with a verbally abusive partner. (Mild spoiler: it ends without violence.)

We get great introductions to the two main characters that had me instantly cackling and highlighting funny text.

I don’t think I’ve ever highlighted so many words in pink (my color code for humor highlights). It’s usually blue (thoughtful, romantic wording) or yellow (typo).

You know how you scour the romantic comedy genre and rarely find an actual FUNNY romcom? This is one of the rare ones. If you don’t laugh at the scenes with Agata and the chickens, well, I don’t know what that means but be concerned.

In Charlie, we have a somewhat broken, soft-hearted, lonely-loner, lovable doofus with a hot bod but few social skills. His life is his chicken children, running/hiding from Polish housekeeper Agata, and emailing Kate. Intriguing, right? I love his lifestyle frankly. I want an Agata.

Kate is witty, sarcastic, open, honest, nurturing, but a people-pleaser. This gets her into a toxic relationship that had me growling at my phone. It’s an accurate portrayal of the gradual nature of abuse where it happens over time and you grow accustomed to being treated like you’re not good enough. She’s with him way too long, but the breakup timing was also perfect. It fit the storyline, not my timeline, iykwim.

I normally do not read slow burns, but this one was a rare exception that I’m so glad I made. The relationship and evolution of each character was more rewarding and more fleshed out (pun not intended but it’s staying in here!) than the steaminess, which is not something I see in most books.

This couple warmed my heart, broke it, warmed it again, and burst all my cold little atrial icicles that formed from reading bad books. I’m going to immediately reread it, which I only do about once a year. And I read A LOT of books. Seriously, this one’s a rare gem. Read it!

This book was okay. It felt like a lot of build up for them to finally get together at the 60% mark and then a lot of unnecessary drama and miscommunication. I liked Kate as an MC but Charlie was kind of obnoxious.

Overall, I did enjoy this book and would recommend it.

Honestly, this was such a unique background to a romance and I thoroughly enjoyed every moment. This was a delightful and witty novel that explored the unexpected romance between a former child star and a writer who has no idea he's the subject of her fantasies. The protagonist's struggle with fame and anonymity is both relatable and engaging, while his connection with Kate Dubois is heartwarming and authentic. The charming narrative and clever dialogue make for an enjoyable read, despite some predictable moments and a few aspects that I wish were evolved a bit more than they were. A solid 4-star book that id definitely recommend to anyone who enjoys a good romcom!

I've been pretty unfocused lately and have been largely unable to read anything that isn't an audiobook. I just haven't had the focus to stick with it. This story was so fun and engaging though that it managed to be the exception. It truly may be the only actual book I've managed to read in the last 30 days.

I loved everything about this book! Once I really started reading I just couldn't stop! The humor and snark were perfectly on point and the story and characters both were very well developed. I loved Kate and Charlie, but the side characters were great too. I especially loved Agata and the chickens, but also can't wait to read Emma and Harrison's stories.

I haven't read a lot of epistolary romance, but this makes me want to seek it out. Thanks to Piper and a few others, I dove into Dramione fan-fic a few months back, so that element of this story was especially enjoyable for me. I could see so much influence from that whole world in this book and I just loved it.

This one felt very fresh and unique, which is something I most appreciate about Piper's writing. Even within a series, each story has its own unique voice.

How much more great could it get? Well, add an actor of said fiction, email friendship, shenanigans, some chickens and another two characters you can't wait to read about and you have this very good romance that's going to stay in your heart long after the final episode!

I wasn’t totally sure when I got into this book of what to expect as it is the first one I read from this author, but it definitely won’t be the last! I fell in love with Charlie and Kate from their first email and was just sucked into their love-story so deep I was up at one in the morning reading about them and not regretting it one bit when I walked into work sleep deprived for several days in a row.
I just loved everything from the characters, to their background to their development. They were funny, adorable, stubborn and real in their struggles and emotions. I feel like I’ve known Charlie, Emma and Harrison my whole life and after meeting Kate and Agata and the chickens I want to go to England and spend time at the Vicarage all together!
Now I don’t know what I’ll do waiting for Emma and Wesley until march 2023!

This book was such a treat! I very much enjoyed the British humour and loved the concept of a fan fiction author (unknowingly) connecting with the actor she writes about. It was sweet and heartfelt and probably will be in my top 10 for the year :)

This was a beautiful wee read that made me laugh, swoon, want to throat punch a character and make me want to raise some chickens!

Kate and Charlie's story is funny, entertaining and will leave you wanting the next in the series before you're even finished this one! A must read if you're in need of a giggle and gooey feels.
