- Reviewed in the United States on September 6, 2020Congratulations to Glynn Stewart for this amazing series. It’s extremely hard to find such an interesting and exciting author who not only writes intelligently but also provides top rated plots, characters and excitement in the stories. I’m really looking forward to the next book.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 3, 2019In the last book, the A!Tol Imperium (of which Earth is now a mostly
happy part) and the Kanzi Theocracy had to make effective common
cause against the exiled Kanzi fanatic Taljzi sect, which had
returned from the depths of the Galaxy in impossible numbers.
(Population is always a problem for advanced species as it is for
our current First World nations, but it seems the Taljzi have
mastered Elder cloning tech..).
Of course making common cause with the Kanzi is difficult because
they are slavers with many millions of Imperium species under the
yoke. If anything like a true alliance is to emerge, those
individuals, at the very least, must be freed. Sent on an embassy
to the Theocracy to make that point very forcefully is Annette Bond,
Duchess of Terra. In the meantime, her daughter Morgan is serving
in the fleet trying to trace the marauding Taljzi back to their
(unknown) home worlds, and they have just succeeded in poking the
bear in the nose. Unfortunately that bear has an armada of
unprecedented size, and it is beelining straight for Sol. The only
core power interested, the Mesharom could help, but their fleet is
months away. Even if Bond can conclude an alliance and bring a
Kanzi fleet to the fray the outcome looks dire. Millions have been
evacuated: the human race will go on, and the A!Tol will avenge,
but that's hardly a 'good' outcome. Well, sometimes you have to
make your own luck.
This is an entertaining space-opera series. It gets a bit over-woke
at times, but in general has efficiently constructed character types
and tense action. It's certainly a step up from the most recent
Weber Honor Harrington outings.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 3, 2023Right. Fast moving. Likeable characters. Filled with distracting gay and lesvian relationships that will date these novels in a few years, like CRT scopes on an early Star Trek movie.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 4, 2023I stayed up too late to read the rest of this book because once more I couldn't put it down. Politics and fleet battles alike abound, as usual. I love Morgan Casimir so much. The throwbacks to the first book, Terran Privateer, were great. The emotions are strong. Read this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 26, 2019I recieved an advanced reader copy. Stewart continues the events started in Darkness Beyond. However, the stakes are higher for Duchess Bond. The threat to Terra has become more dire.
Stewart's ability to spin a tale continues to astound me. His characters are multifaceted and you have to pay attention to their motivations as much as their actions. I strongly suggest reading the prequel trilogy starting with The Terran Privateer to get a full background. However this novel can stand on it's own. Glynn Stewart needs to get started on book 3 for this trilogy! Can't wait.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 6, 2025Yeah, it's fiction. And it depends on the readers willing suspension of disbelief. If you're reading science fiction, you're probably good at that.
Still, several times, when things were at their darkest, the cavalry charged on to the rescue at the last possible moment. It was a trope that was used a few times too many.
Despite that, it was a good read and I'll continue reading the series.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 26, 2019I always look forward to a new Glynn Stewart book! The worlds and scenarios he creates play through my daydreams long after I have read his books, any time I'm looking to escape or turn my mind to wonder.
As with so many of Glynn Stewart's stories there is wonder and tension and struggle and fear and loss. The are captivating reads that make my feel like a slightly improved person for having read them. As per usual I knocked this one out in a single weekend of aggressive reading. I hope you enjoy this as much as I did!
I was given a free digital copy for review in exchange for my honest review of this book. Then I purchased this book within minutes of learning that it was finally available.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 2, 2019If you enjoyed the earlier books in the series, you will like Shield of Terra. The plot takes longer to develop than in most of Stewart’s books, but the second half provides good solid entertainment. I enjoy more exposure to the core powers although the fortuitous save the day appearances now feel predictable. Morgan develops into a “real” character inherent own right, if you disregard the romance aspect - which borders on feeling trite. The most genuine characters in the story were the passing of the old guard- their perspectives made the story deeper. Overall, a worthy addition to the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still impressive
I've read through the five books in as many days, and I continue to be impresed by the pace and skilled writing of the author. I write SciFi books myself, so it's not that I don't know what I'm talking about. In particular, I like the descripton of a complex stellar society and of course the descripton of space battles. So far, Glynn Stewart IS the only one who has managed to reach a scale close to the space battles described by my son Alan (sorry, not yet translated into English). And that, believe me, IS a great compliment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another excellent addition to the series.
I don't think that have read anyone other than Glynn Stewart for the last six books, I've been catching up on his other series. I started reading GS when I read The Terran Privateer and since then this series has been at the top of my favourites list. This book did not disappoint me. The story has pace, the length to allow development, good plot, good characters that I really like. This has to be my current favourite. I just hope that Glynn has at least another series in this universe.

5.0 out of 5 stars Duchess of Terra take 2 is still a good read.
I like pretty much everything the author puts out. This novel is no exception. I’m interested to see where he goes from here.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good honest space opera
A good old style space opera, fast paced and without intellectual ambitions. It's a relaxing reading and the reader knows that he must suspend disbelief and critical spirit, however it would be nice if sometimes the protagonists were not so totally perfect, foresighted and totally free of defects.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent read
Keeping up the standard of this series. I am enjoying them immensely. Space opera in the best tradition of the genre.
