The Proposal (SWANK Book 1) Kindle Edition
I was expecting a lot less glaring and a lot more moaning.
Instead, she's proposing an enticing deal that I can't bear to walk away from.
To land one of the city’s biggest clients, she wants us to put our differences aside and play fake fiancés for the next thirty days.
So, I slip the diamond ring onto her finger and agree to play the perfect fiancé. How hard can this be?
A hell of a lot harder than I thought...
She’s infuriatingly stubborn and she thinks I’m a cocky jerk with an enormous ego. (She’s right, but I can definitely back it up...)
As our long days stretch into even later nights, it’s getting harder to remember we’re only playing pretend, which means one thing.
She won’t be faking it for long…

About the author

Maya Hughes, that's me!, can often be found sneaking in another chapter while hiding in the bathroom from her kids! :-) I’m a romance writer who loves taking inspiration from everyday life, namely my husband and biggest fan. Inspiration also strikes when I hear a song, meet someone new or daydream while at soccer practice.
I’m the mom of three little ones, the wife to an amazing husband and also work full time. Some of my favorite things are cupcakes, cinnamon rolls, white wine, laughing until I can’t breathe, traveling with my family and Jeff Goldblum.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 16, 2020Think you’ve read feisty heroines before? Zara Logan will make them all pale in comparison. As one of Zara's two female friends says, “once you get past the prïckly exterior, biting sarcasm, face-melting staredowns and general grumpiness, she’s so sweet.” I thought it only fair to warn you that you’re in for one heck of a wild ride.
Zara is dedicated, committed, and a diligent worker. She's also the kind of gal who pays her younger brother's tuition at boarding school while she subsists on ramen, hand me downs, and scavenged furniture. But if she can make a success of the partnership between the event planning company she works for and the one Leo Wilder works for, she may be able to get her head above water. Too bad her first introduction to Leo ends with her fresh, hot coffee spilled down the front of her and him being a world-class jerk. Add to the mix that they stumble into a fake engagement when they can’t stand each other, and things get a whole lot more complicated.
Now, let’s talk about Leo. Famous football player (ex now) with a bit of an ego, he delights in winding up Zara. In his defense, it's way too easy to do and delightfully entertaining. He's also got a big heart and really cares about the people in his life, which is why he's trying to help salvage his uncle's event planning business. Then there are his close guy friends, and they'll keep you in stitches! Why is there something so endearing about a group of guy friends who act like adolescents when they’re together but are hysterically funny in their shenanigans?
Aside from Zara needing to be shaken a time or two, I loved her and Leo together. I’ll admit, I was ready to jump into the pages, sock her in the arm and tell her to snap out of it and see what's right in front of her face. I was fully prepared to steal Leo away if Zara didn’t shape up and get with the program!
Zara, Leo and their friends are so much fun, and I can’t wait for more from these entertaining characters. With the requisite Mr. Eggplant-meets-Ms. Peach scenes, this story also has tons of heart and will definitely give yours a workout. This is the first book in a new series, so there's more to come from this wonderful group of characters. From the looks of the epilogue, things are going to get verrry interesting, so get your copy of this hilarious, heartfelt, phenomenal story and read it soon so you’ll be ready for the next book in the series!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 19, 2020The Proposal is the first book in Maya Hughes' new series SWANK. I was super excited to get my hands on this and this book didn't disappoint. It's such a cute and hilarious enemies?/rivals-ish to lovers story with fake fiance trope thrown in.
Zara Logan is a very stubborn character who is stuck in life. She is struggling financially to put her brother through private school but finally gets the opportunity to work with a big client, Winthrope Hotels, to secure a better position and better pay at her firm. Unfortunately, she has to work with Leo to achieve this.
Leo Wilder is an ex-NFL player. His football career seems to end before it even really began due to an injury. Now he is bitter and lost, trying to find a new career. His Uncle's event planning business isn't doing the greatest and working with Winthrope could be the business's last hope. He offers to help his Uncle out not knowing that he has to work with Zara, who just so happens to be the mouthy girl who blew upon him that very morning for spilling coffee down her blouse.
This duo may start off on the wrong foot but they make a such great team. Zara is definitely a very controlling and stubborn character but Leo finds a way to break down her walls. Leo is so swoon-worthy; he was the highlight of the book. Leo is the sweetest man ever and although he may not come off that way, he is so soft, gentle, and loving. I found it hard to connect with Zara but the romance between these two was hilarious and sweet.
What a great way to start off a new series. The other characters already have me hooked. Maya is so wonderful at writing male friendships and I'm eager to get to know more about all of these characters (Hunter and Everest I love you)! Maya already begins to hint at future couples and I am sooooo freaking excited to read the rest of the series. If my prediction is correct, I already have my favorite couple and I needed their book yesterday, like c'mon (I think they're the third book hehe)!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 23, 2021Borrowed from KU. Written in dual first person POV. Slow burn to a decent amount of sexy scenes. Little bit of humor. Leo was likable but Zara’s repetition of how hard her life is got really old really fast. She’s too self absorbed and didn’t seem to pay any attention to Leo’s previous career, childhood/history or what he wants for his future. She was also to easily swayed by materialistic stuff - Leo “messes up”, solve it by buying her something (although truthfully he didn’t mess up nearly as much as he took the blame for).
I’ve read other books by this author and this one was not her best. The pacing was all over the place - the book dragged at times and then jumped ahead. The timelines for everything were off. There is an epilogue but it does more to set up the next book instead of providing closure for this one (the previous chapter gives a brief HEA/HFN so the epilogue wasn’t really necessary). There’s also a bonus epilogue that you can get from the author but I didn’t care enough about these characters to waste time getting it.
Overall, the book was fine to borrow and read once, and I’m not giving up on this author because I’ve enjoyed many of her other books, but I won’t reread this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but...
It’s a bit slow at times. The getting together part could have more of banter & last but not least the ending, too abrupt. I was totally confused that it ended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic New Series!
I absolutely loved Zara and Leo! This book had me laughing out loud so much! The back and forth between these to was brilliant!
Zara and Leo's first encounter had me giggling away, of course they are never likely to bump into each other again..right?
Zara and Leo have both had it tough for different reasons. Zara basically cares for her younger brother, puts him through school and works all the hours of the day at a job that she settled for because it paid well.
Leo is a retired, due to injury, pro footballer. He's at a cross roads in his life, his relationship with his Dad is pretty non existent so when he goes and see his uncle who is struggling to keep the business he run with his husband and, Leo' favourite uncle afloot he steps in to help.
Little did he know who he would be working with!
I loved this brand new series from Maya and I am desperate to read the rest of the Swank guy's stories!

4.0 out of 5 stars Steamy workplace relationship worth a read!
The Proposal is my first Maya Hughes book and I really enjoyed it. I’ll definitely look for more of her stories.
This enemies to lovers/fake relationship story is a wonderful beginning to a new series about 5 college friends.
It centres on Zara who is determined and independent with big responsibilities and Leo who is charming and dependable ex-football player with big life decisions to make. They literally crash into each other the first time they meet and then get thrown together on a work assignment.
These two straddle the fine line between love and hate until a misunderstanding pushes them into a fake engagement. Both have reasons for wanting to succeed and they need to find a way to work together without killing each other.
Leo is quite swoony and I really enjoyed his character arc. He’s quite thoughtful and giving and really does want to do the right thing.
Zara was so strong but as with so many tough and determined female characters sometimes they are their own worst enemy as they try to do and be it all. I was constantly waiting for Zara to lower her guard.
The chemistry was off the charts and I just wanted them to get it on all the time! Workplace tension is always a winner.
I really enjoyed this story and would recommend it!
As this is the first in a new series there is a lot of character set up for Leo’s friends and there’s lots of delicious potential with Leo’s friends. I can’t wait for more of their stories.

4.0 out of 5 stars Zara and Leo Supremacy
i actually really enjoyed this book and love the relationship between zara and leo. the banter that they have is one of my favourite things about them and i’m so excited to get more crumbs of them from the next books in the SWANK series. the buildup to their relationship is one that i really enjoyed because seeing them work together allows you to see how good of a couple they would be and makes the anticipation even better.
i absolutely adore leo and how loving and kind he is and really would do absolutely anything for the people around him. i’m also so excited to see more of the boys and see more into their lives.
the relationship that zara has with her brother is one of the sweetest, most humbling relationships i’ve ever seen. she would literally give up her life for him and it made me feel so emotional whenever i was reading their scenes.
the epilogue of this book has made me so so excited for the 2nd book to come.
