- Reviewed in the United States on October 5, 2020I was charmed by this story, much like a siren charms its' prey. This delightfully dark, whimsical tale reminded me so much of A Midsummer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare, and I suspect that's on propose. Author Silverwood has crafted a story that hints at mystery, mayhem and sexual fluidity that makes it a must read for Greek mythology enthusiasts. Because after all, the siren first came from Greek manuscripts, and got mixed up with the term "mermaid" as history grew older.
What's the difference? Sirens were believed to be half man, half bird, who sing to mariners to lure them to their death. Sirens were not known as swimmers. Mermaids were believed to be half man, half fish with no malice in their actions but were known as swimmers. Over time, the terms became intermixed, with even Shakespeare noting it his "Midsummer Night's Dream":
“I sat upon a promontory, and heard a mermaid, on a dolphin’s back, uttering such dulcet and harmonious breath, that the rude sea grew civil at her song; and certain stars shot madly from their spheres, to hear the sea-maid’s music.”
Silverwood may or may not have been influenced by Shakespeare, but it is safe to assume she's a detailed writer. Its amazing the way she details a room or an emotion with educated prose and imagination.
"She wept as she saw the dullness come over his beautiful eyes. She cried tears of silver that floated away as she released him to the depths. The ocean swallowed him and he drifted lower beneath her feet."
"She moved like a piece of wet silk through the water. Trails of the sea bubbled by in flickers that clung to her body, shreds of gemlike luminescence. Glimpses of breast and the swirling fan of dark red hair on her naked back. The undulations of her body made a liquified burlesque. Startling. Sensual. A personification of lust."
"Since he’d lowered a cover over the outside of the pool glass, Raffaela could no longer see the beach, the sand, or the waves, though she could hear the muted roar, smell the salt, hear the calls of the sea birds. Reflections of sunlight rippled through the white canvas cover and onto the sand beneath her feet. Plants familiar to her swayed below, green and healthy, a replica of life in the shallower parts of the sea. Rocks, sand, plants, and the hum of some machine that pushed clean water from holes in the walls."
The sex scenes vibrate with feminist energy and thrill with uniqueness. While I was reading the book, I felt like there was more to the story than the obvious. Silverwood has always been known as an author who takes the road less traveled, and doesn't disappoint here. There are surprises that you won't see coming. Ultimately, the story rocks the mermaid/siren myths by injecting some much needed emotional depth and killer vibes.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 9, 2020It was a really good read, way better than mathematics ;)
Three stars becuz I was disappointed in some of the writing, it confused me as to what was happening sometimes and becuz it felt rushed, time gaps, and merrick suddenly showing up at the end? It was expected but I also expected more, he hardly spoke and was more of an afterthought at the end. But all in all, a good read if u like dark, kinky, and m/m/f (even if it's just a teeny bit).
- Reviewed in the United States on October 31, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI loved those newest story that blends ands twisted fishermen's 'tails' about mermaids and sirens, women on ships and bad luck, and how the sea calls to some.
This story shows that not all monsters have sharp teeth and claws. Some are hidden behind handsome faces and grinning smiles. It's a story that shows how deceitful sweet words can be whether they are spoken from honeyed mouths or sung from a siren's throats; actions speak louder than words and when you're trying to keep a siren captive, you won't want to be hearing too many words . . . Or your might end up her next victim under the sea.🧜♀️🌊
- Reviewed in the United States on October 5, 2020This is a fish tail if there ever was one. A hot, sexy
erotic story of myths and men facing the irrisistable
song of a siren. Wolfgang is angry, his friend was taken
from him, he witnessed it and intends to get revenge.
Thinking he has Raffaella's mermaidness figured out,
he catches her attention when she appears, before she
gets to end her life as she planned. Her life is lonely, no
affection, no love just a life of the sea and the "ravening"
the strong urge to take a life that is necessary to stay alive
herself. As the two start talking and go on to have a highly
unusual relationship, filled with sex, discoveries and possible
answers to centuries old questions. Being a marine biologist
Wolfgang thinks he has a the upper hand at figuring out
Raffaela's existence and can get revenge for her taking his
friend, Merrick. He's so very wrong. Sex is a key element to
the secrets even Raffaela isn't aware of and his experiments
on her are many sexy, erotic and twisted techniques.
The ending is one surprisingly hot HEA.
Happy one-handed reading!

- Reviewed in the United States on May 1, 2022Format: KindleVerified PurchaseMy first ever Siren story, Sacrificed to the Sea had my heart in my throat for the majority of the novella. Raffaela is such a fierce, intelligent, but lonely soul. And Wolfgang…..boy, he was all sorts of messed up! I wish this novella was about 10 pages longer, however, as the ending seemed rushed with an abrupt ending.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 7, 2020Cari's writing style is so visual and poetic and a huge mind f###! I really enjoyed this book. It was so different but yet still with the author's stamp on it. Loved that it was unapologetic in its mayhem. If merpeople really existed I have no doubt this author nailed it. Highly recommend this book, as always with Ms Silverwood's books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved, loved, loved
Cari Silverwood is my literary Pied Piper, wherever she leads me with her words I will follow. This time she has led me to a story I probably would not have looked at twice had it not been written by her. I have never been enamoured by mermaid folklore, Disney or otherwise but this story kept me riveted from the first page until the last.
This is a story with a beautiful, alluring, deadly mermaid/siren, a very sexy, dominant, vengeful marine scientist, and of course because it’s Cari Silverwood some very kinky, incredibly hot, and sometimes disturbing sex.
But it’s also a story of loneliness, longing, obsession, revenge, redemption, lust and love.
I absolutely loved this story and Ms. Silverwood has made me a fan of mermaid tales, but I suspect only if written by her. Definitely recommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars As delightfully dark and depraved as Mesmer.
I only have one dissatisfaction with this book and it's that Ms Silverwood didn't make it over 500 pages! I adored Raffaela, Wolfgang and all the things siren, kinky and dark, so much so I would happily have stayed in this world. What you will get, by reading Sacrificed to the Sea is a wonderful story. One that is sprinkled with kink and covered in darkness to provide a rich and tasty tale of immorality and perversion.
Given that the story contains a siren/mermaid, it had a very "real world" feel to it, which added in to the darkness of the story. In fact this felt very similar too, whilst being absolutely nothing like, Mesmer . To me it was fresh, different, captivating and amazing. It had emotions aplenty, an intriguing plot and was so hot you could fry eggs on it. I found myself sinking (pun intended) into the pages of this book from the very first paragraph, swept overboard by a ravening storm of epic proportions.
Whilst it didn't have the humour that has been prevalent in recent work by the author, (nor required it) this was full of irony. It also carried quite an emotional impact, yanking at my heartstrings more than once. Raffaela's loneliness and Wolfgang's sense of loss both had me blinking back tears. The pain of having to sacrifice everything to get their heart's desire, of doing that and still not being able to achieve their dreams.... oh boy did that stab me in the heart.
Some of you may (snigger) be shocked by a certain scene between Raffaela, Wolfgang and a firearm... it certainly takes kinky improvisation to a whole new level. It also epitomised the wild and feral connection this pair shared. And just how damn dirty the sex is! Not that one would expect anything different from Ms Silverwood , the crazy, filthy smut is why we're here after all. Well that and those very unexpected plot twists that she throws in, that make you go "oh" that part was foreshadowing and smack your head.
Falling in that grey area of whether it is a long novella or a short novel, this is a fairly quick read but one that will stay with you way past reading the last lines. Whether out of shock or amazement depends on your tolerances but I certainly loved every single word of it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Deep Dark & Sexy
Deep dark & sexy this story of a Siren made against her will many years before. She survives by taking lives to sustain hers but regrets a man who she would have liked to keep. Despite her efforts he is lost but his partner finds her & takes revenge. Can she survive his plan for retribution & can he carry it out?
A strong but dark storyline with a twist.

5.0 out of 5 stars SO BAD, SO DIRTY................SO GOOD!
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseWith her gift for creating imaginative plots fueled by some sizzlingly hot sexual 'happenings', Cari has given us a whole new take on mermaids. This is quite a deep, quite dark story - just who are the real monsters. Without giving too much away, Wolfgang wants revenge for the death of his lover by Raffaela. Revenge though quickly turns to obsessive sexual attraction leading to love. The characters though are ultimately ruled by the sea and have to obey it's call. This is a clever story with quite a surprising twist. Death may not be the end - so just be careful when you sail or swim in the sea - the merpeople may be waiting!!!!!!
