Safe Place (Rainbow Place Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 595 ratings

Where do you go when your home is no longer a safe place?

Alex is about to turn eighteen and is firmly in the closet. He’s been biding his time, waiting to escape to uni, and finally come out away from the oppressive influence of his homophobic father. When he flunks his exams, he’s stuck in the small town of Porthladock—and what’s worse is that he’s working for his dad. The only thing that makes it bearable is Cam.

Cam’s comfortable with his bisexuality, but he doesn’t broadcast it. Young, free, and single, his social life revolves around playing rugby and hanging out with his mates. He’s attracted to Alex, but with the six-year age gap, Cam’s wary of getting involved. Plus, he thinks Alex needs a friend more than he needs a lover, and as their friendship grows, Cam decides he’s not willing to risk ruining it for casual sex.

When Alex’s dad finds out about his sexuality, Alex is suddenly both jobless and homeless. He finds work at Rainbow Place, the local LGBT-friendly café and Cam lets Alex stay in his flat for a while. But Alex would rather be sleeping in Cam’s bed than on his sofa. With them both living under one roof, their feelings for each other grow stronger, and the sexual tension is hard to ignore. Will giving in to it ruin their friendship and complicate things for Alex even more?

Although this book is part of a linked series, it has a satisfying happy ending, and can be enjoyed as a standalone.

What can I say, I'm just a sucker for the kind of sweet, sexy stories Jay Northcote writes. He's managed to craft yet another solidly sweet and adorable romance that I'm sure I'll be comfort!reading again and again. Cam and Alex have amazing chemistry that's evident even from the bits we get of them in the previous Rainbow Place book. While this is a slow burn, that chemistry is always simmering beneath the surface, giving off tiny sparks that get bigger and bigger until the end when they finally have that beautiful consummation of their relationship. Such a cute read despite the rather heavy turn towards the middle when there is an upheaval in Alex's life. Highly recommend. =)

This was provided as an ARC but I liked it so much I snagged my own copy for my library.

CW: Homophobia, homophobic family, negative coming out experience

The biggest thing that I love about this series is the fact that Seb truly creates a safe space via his cafe/bar Rainbow Place. Similar to the first book, Safe Place is a s*xual awakening, coming out story. This book is primarily centered around Alex who has had to stay in the closet while growing up with very homophobic parents. He is able to connect with fellow alphabet mafia members at Rainbow Place and express himself in ways he's never been able to. And he strikes up a friendship with Cam, an older bi guy who is the anchor Alex needs as he navigates a lot of changes at once. I don't love that the guys meet at 17 and 23 - and that they get s*xual shortly after Alex turns 18 - so I did have to remind myself this is fiction and get past it. I totally understand why the author made Alex young since a big part of the story is Alex transitioning from life as a teenager in his parent's home to adulthood where he can finally come out and live his truth. If an age gap like that is a dealbreaker for you, then skip this book. But do know that Alex and Cam spend a lot of time building up a really great friendship before they finally take the leap and make more of their relationship.

Overall I enjoyed the journey this book takes you on, angst and drama included. I recommend this book if you like Jay Northcote and/or if you're looking for some angsty s*xual awakening.

There’s a roller coaster ride of emotions and responsibilities for Alex as he comes of age and falls in love with Cam. Will Alex have a safe place to come “out?” Enjoy Alex and Cam’s passionate discoveries!!!

Cam and Alex meet through Rainbow Place. The attraction is instant, but a relationship is far from that! Friends first for these guys. It is a long slow burn. My only wish was for more sexy times for these teo guys. Other than the unexpected coming out, and crappy parents it's a very sweet read. I'll be reading book 3 for sure.

I loved the first in the series and this ones centers for the most part around the Rainbow Place café and restaurant but with a couple of characters that had minor parts in the first one as the MCs in this one.

Alex is a closeted (to his homophobic father and mother) 17-year-old who takes up with some young hangers on from Rainbow Place and somehow manages to cross paths with Cam, one of the rugby players of all sexual persuasions who helped repair the café after it was trashed by vandals.

If this is supposed to be Alex's story, then you should be prepared for the fact that the guy on the cover has to be Cam because the descriptions of them by the author match him pretty well. Besides, Alex is just this shy of twinkish, which makes their relationship very interesting in theory.

In practice, however, the relationship is fraught with hesitation on Cam's part and fear on both parts of what might happen if Alex's father got wind of his son's predilections.

With final exams and other sundry (and one violent) matters sneaking into the tale, the action picks up more than half way through the book to make for a sweet and, in the end, somewhat steamy resolution.

Hope there's more coming from this place.

Not really into twink stories, teenage angst can get tiresome. But after getting into this story I
came to understand much more deeply what younger LGBTQ kids go through. Their struggles, now in a time when coming out proudly should be easier, are still so difficult. My hat is off to all of this new generation of LGBTQers. And kudos to Jay for helping us open our eyes and hearts.

    3.5*

Safe Place is a sweet, slow burn romance. I really liked both Alex and Cam. I actually appreciated how slow Cam was taking things with Alex, considering Alex's age and everything that was happening in his life. But I was very happy when he finally realized he'd fought his feelings long enough.

I really felt for Alex. Having to hide who you are because of your parents is just not right.
I hated Alex's dad, hated him. I don't understand parents placing conditions on their love for their child/ren. Ugh, it's so infuriating and heartbreaking. Parents should love the child they brought into the world unconditionally. Alex deserved so much better and I'm glad he found Cam and the people of Rainbow Place.

The second installment of the Rainbow Place series is just as wonderful as the first. Seb and Jason show up again as background characters, but the main story is with Alex, 18 and hiding his sexual orientation from his bigoted parents.
I love the characters of Alex and Cam, and I really enjoyed how the age difference between them was treated. Instead of glossing over the 6 year difference, it was a consideration in their eventual relationship.
I really love how Jay writes real people and real relationships, not glamorized versions of relationships.

I really liked the first book of the series so gave book two a try. What I like about these books is that the events and characters are believable. I found this book not as strong as book one, but still enjoyed it. No crazy high drama/angst, just a decent story well written.

I found you initially and now can’t stop reading your work. I love the way the characters morph out from their initial introduction and all are so real and reflect not only how they fit in the storyline but reflect hidden and genuine elements of our lives. You are a very talented user of the English (not American) language and offer real time stories that readers in Britain can assimilate to.

I love this series. I loved Seb in book 1 and how he met and fell for Jason in that book and coming back to Rainbow Place was very welcoming. The MC Alex is trying to leave home for uni and hopes to come out and not have to hide a big part of who he is. Sadly for Alex his Dad is terrible and very homophobic. I didn’t like Martin Elliot in the first book, and I like him even less in this book. What a horrible character! Well done to the author for writing someone who is so easy to hate!
As I said we get to see Seb and Jason again from book 1 and the cast of characters who visit the cafe.
The central romance between Alex and Cam was sweet, they skate around their feelings for each other. They were a lovely couple and I’m so glad Alex had someone to support him through everything. I’m actually glad he didn’t make it into his business course, I think he would have hated it. It wasn’t his dream, I’m glad he is now free to pursue what he wants.
Can’t wait to read book 3!

4.0 out of 5 stars A good second book
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 24, 2022
A great second book to this series. I loved the characters but feel we needed slightly more depth to understand why Cam was reluctant to start a relationship which was the issue of the whole story. It meant the ending just suddenly happened. Looking forward to reading about the next couple.
