Saint's Surrender: A Gay Paranormal Fated Mates Romance (Paranormal Security Council series Book 2) Kindle Edition

3.9 out of 5 stars 34 ratings

An otherworldly assassin finds his mate in the last place he expects…

Tattooed half-breed, Takayo ‘Saint’ St. John, kills for the Paranormal Security Council with single-minded efficiency. He’s never questioned or failed his assignments…until he stares into the cornflower blue eyes of Ryken Valte, the man whose life he’s infiltrated under false pretenses. Harsh words and a cold shoulder isn’t enough to keep the distance between them, but Saint’s mission hangs over his head. His job is to eliminate the brother of the man he loves and he sees no way out of his predicament.

Ryken melts under the intense attraction between him and Saint, but the man keeps pushing him away, denying their connection. He’d give up everything, do anything, to have Saint at his side and in his bed, but secrets bigger than them make it impossible. Ryken yearns for Saint’s surrender, but he’ll get more than he bargained for when dark forces neither comprehends return with a vengeance.

Saint’s Surrender is book 2 in the Paranormal Security Council. This interracial m/m romance features high heat, secrets, a forbidden romance, and an assassin who is definitely more than meets the eye.

A Grenadian transplant, Avril now lives in Tucker, GA, with a madly tolerant husband. Together they raise an eccentric daughter who’s pretty meh about reading and school. Avril’s earliest memories of reading revolve around discussing the plot points of Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys with an equally book-minded mother.

Always in love with the written word, Avril finally decided to do the writing in August of ’09 and never looked back. She’s been nominated for numerous awards, including Best Author, Best series (Brooklyn Sinners), and Favorite All-Time Author. In 2013 Avril won Evernight Publishing’s Reader’s Choice Award for the LGBT (Male/Male) category. Recently she took home the Golden Ankh award for best Male/Male romance for her bestselling novel, Sinner’s Fall.

Addicted to cake, the ID Channel, and the UFC, Avril writes Gay and Erotic Romance with happy endings; she remains a believer of love in all its forms.

3.0 out of 5 stars Mostly Steam With A Patchily Cohesive Plot
Reviewed in Australia on March 28, 2019

Let's start by saying Takayo St. John (better known as Saint) and Ryken Valte are good with the sex not so good with the talking. There is a definite plot and lore in play here but it plays second fiddle to the steam between the leading men. The lore and plot aren't awful as they exist it's just something is wrong, inconsistent maybe, I can't put my finger on it. I didn't like the way the story was revealed, it's explained as Ms. Ashton deems necessary, which means it is a slow reveal. we are left with questions repeatedly, one or twice I'm fine with but more than that I need answers. Hide them from the other protagonist but not the reader. The ending is a bit gah, it feels forced, a bit rushed and inconclusive. Where are they as a couple, are they mated? Not? What just happened?

A couple of aspects I really liked. One was the decision to give the Ryken a boyfriend, a serious one at that. The mate pull can't be ignored but David raised the stakes in an already high stakes game, especially given Saint keeps pushing Ryken away. Ryken is really powerful when it comes to Saint, he makes Saint week, that felt right. Better because Ryken wasn't entirely aware of the effect he had on his lover. Oh and making Ryken a vers was smart, it suits his personality. Saint and Ryken are an interesting couple but will ultimately be unmemorable.

Fair declaration, it's part of a larger series, Paranormal Security Council which 1, I haven't read any of and 2, has different relationship dynamics. Books 1 & 3 are M/F, book 2 is M/M and book 4 is M/M/F. Because I hadn't read any of the others I'm not sure how much of the lore involved in the story is his specifically and how much of it is to the world and the series.

I don't know if my reactions to Saint's Surrender would have been different if I hadn't just finished Color Me In a deeply beautiful and thought provoking book with charming, engaging characters whose happiness I wanted. Saint's Surrender isn't any of those things. I spent a great amount of the time thinking wtf is going on and not really caring for any of the major players particularly.
