Chance Gordon Tillman is born with Down syndrome. He's unable to speak and is locked inside his own head. He struggles to be normal and blend in, which is hard to do in his small town of Cold Harbour, Nova Scotia. If that isn't enough, at the age of five, his Ma packs her bags and disappears into the night. Distraught by her leaving, Chance does his best to be the son his Pa, A.J., needs him to be. If only Pa's new friend, Rena Mae would give him a chance, she might actually like him. However, her sights are set on a life with only A.J. and she persuades Chance to head to Halifax to apply for a living assistance program for people just like him. She convinces him he is a burden on his Pa and he packs his bag and leaves for the big city. What he finds there turns out to be so much more than a second chance at the life he's always dreamed of.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 25, 2014This book is easily my favorite of 2014. It pulled me in, from the very first line, and it held me captive the whole time. I devoured it quickly and cried like a baby at the end. It was beautiful, heart wrenching, a roller coaster ride of emotions. I wanted so much to cuddle up little Chance Gordon and tell him it would be okay, and to protect him from the person with the laugh that sounds like dolphins feeding. I highly recommend it.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 13, 2014A beautiful story. So touching and poignant. For most part of the story we are inside Chance Gordon's head, what he feels and all he understands, even though not many people pay him any attention.
The story is sad in a way and hopeful in another. Chance Gordon lives with his dad, after his mum up and left. He can't talk and can only hope his dad can understand him and love him for who he is.
Here comes the evil witch, sorry can't even say her name, and she makes his life miserable, working all the better because he feels guilty and can't tell his dad what she is up to.
So Chance Gordon decide to try out life in the city and see if this program will help him. What happens in the city is a miracle and it makes everyone realize how unjust they have been and how wonderful this young man truly is.
All I say is buy this book. It will stay with you for a long time and it'll make you see how a simple gesture can go a long way in helping others.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 26, 2014This book is about Chance Gordon , he was born with Down Syndrome . Chance's story is told from his point of view and we follow him on his journey from the age of five until his teenage years.
You get to experience Chance as a young boy and see the world through his eyes. As a reader you follow him through his heart aches and joys. You want to cheer his triumphs and cry in his sorrow. The author does a great job transitioning the story from his childhood to his adolescent years.
This book has a bit of everything in it; sadness, hope, love, compassion, humor, dreams, a beautiful ending. The way that Chance handles everything that is thrown his way is truly extraordinary. Even without the ability to speak, Chance finds ways to express himself and his feelings. The author does an excellent job at showing that Chase has his own ways of making a difference in the world.
This is not my typical genre, but I found myself enjoying this story. It is a very touching, inspiring, and well-written story. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for something new to read.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 3, 2014When I read the blurb for this book, I knew that it was something that I just had to read. Chance Gordon was born with Down Syndrome and is unable to speak. His beautiful story is told from his point of view and tells of the thoughts and feelings in his young head. He feels so much and so deeply. This story kept making me think of my own cousin with Down Syndrome and the struggles that he has faced. So many times I wanted to reach into this book and just hug him, that's how good June J. Austin has written this book. You get to experience Chance as a young boy, then the story smoothly transitions into his teenage years. Many times I found myself in tears and then in next moment he would say something that had me laughing out loud.
Without giving the story away, I will say that this book has a little bit of everything; sadness, hope, love, compassion, humor, dreams, and a beautiful HEA. It will stay with me as one of the most heartfelt and memorable books to touch my heart. I'm afraid that this review will not do such a wonderful story justice. I will say, thank you for writing such a beautiful book, June J. Austin.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 7, 2014I enjoyed the story and found it to be an interesting and powerful read. The story is about a young boy named Chance Gordon born with Down Syndrome. Chance does not communicate in the typical way because he cannot speak. The story shows us how he still can communicate his heart and soul in nontraditional but beautiful ways. I have a daughter with Down syndrome that is now 27 years old. We were told she would never walk or talk and she proved the "experts" wrong. The author does a great job at showing that Chase has his own way of making a difference in the world. It is a touching, well-written story and I would recommend it to everyone that wants to understand the value of our difference.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 28, 2015A tough, poinient, heart wrenching story. Unusual topic, point of view, and lead character, but amazingly touching story, very cleverly written. Honestly I wasn't sure I wanted or could start this story, didn't know if my heart would make it in one piece, and it didn't, but wow, reviewing through tears, exhausted from the rollercoaster journey, I'm so so pleased I made it to the end, try it, have tissues near by, enjoy it, learn something, and be humbled.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 8, 2014Not my usual type of book but I recommend it to all. I had my doubts about it when I started this book but after I get into it I enjoyed it. I recommend that you keep an open mind do not see the words Down syndrome and decide not to read this book. If you do you will miss a great story!
