The Saxon Lord's Unwanted Bride (Medieval Brides Book 1) Kindle Edition
An embittered lord… A gentle bride… A dark secret
Harald of Wildstorm is tortured by nightmares of the Battle of Hastings. Embittered by past betrayals, he values women only for the satisfaction they give him in bed. But he finds himself reluctantly falling in love with Eloise de Morigueax, the Norman noblewoman he’s commanded to marry. Her quiet courage and devotion to his people breaks down his defences and softens his heart.
Initially terrified of her barbaric husband, Eloise’s hopes for a peaceful life are strengthened by the glimpses of the compassionate man beneath his uncouth exterior. However, a visitor from her past jeopardises the fragile bond of love, setting in motion a chain of events leading to murder and betrayal, which threatens to destroy their lives and shatter the peace between Norman and Saxon.
Heat level: Hot!
Note: HEA guaranteed, but this book has a flawed hero, and includes some scenes of violence, and references to past abuse and trauma.

Oh my, what a heart wrenching tale!
It left me shaken, so many things happened and not as I would have liked them too.
It is dark, it is bewitching, it is flailing and stirring.
Yet I read it in no time, pages flying one after the other.
I prefer my stories to be light hearted and easy for my peace of mind, still I have no regret to have read this book, it is a magnificent and heartbreaking tale of second chance and recovery- I can’t write healing, because the characters will stay forever marked by the events bringing them together.
Eloise is a saint, she should be canonized for the pureté of her soul even more after the agony she endured. Never does she loose her temper, she always appears in control. She is honest to the fault, whatever the price it might cost her.
How could Harald stays blind and deaf to her goodness for so long, when he should be worshiping the ground she walks on.
I thought An Enemy at The Highland Court by Celeste Barclay was the summum of what abuse could be, how wrong I was.
I won’t ruin this story but know you will have to hold on while follow Eloise and all the abuses she faces silently, her head bent.
And while I can understand why Harald has reason to be wary of women, but he made of one example a law. Even if he is again and again shown how kind and caring his new wife is.
When the story reached a certain turn, I did not see any redeeming road for him.
How could he atone for all his sins, at no moment did he deserve what he had been granted, doubting her at any moment, preferring to listen to snaky treacly voice than trust what he has in front of him all this time.
And because of him and his inability to trust or his need to believe the worst of Eloise, he put her in harm way, making her one more time a victim of the unthinkable.
Be warned, It is not a story to put in everyone’s hands, it is not for the faint of the heart, this story will reach its full circle but on the journey, the characters will face challenge and pain, they will be forever changed and some trauma will never truly heal. While love prevails, the pages are loaded with hurt, sorrows and wounds so deep they will forever be tattooed in their soul.
And yes, it is a very dark tale and it will at time be even grimmer. But in the end, love triumphs.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 1, 2024Eloise and Harald. He's a warrior great and strong and prejudice against women. She sweet, kind, patient, and justifiable terrified of men and there demands. And everyone has a secret.. The plots not bad a little wobbly in places but a decent read. You get enough background on all the principle players to understand motivation to and reasoning, You do wonder if Harald was dropped on his head more then once violently, but realize that 1066 was the time of seriously warped view of women. And he has all of them Eloise is not the bold heroine we've come to expect but she is determined to do her duty to her husbands and his people. All in all it was a nice story and readable. So it gets a one thumb up. Not to shabby Ms. Royal, not to shabby
- Reviewed in the United States on January 31, 2025Finally a historical account with just enough characters to make it easy to keep up with each one. A novel that was easy to follow the plot and and interesting enough too hold your attention. An extremely good book that demands a sequel.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 7, 2023I think Emily Royal is a great writer of fast-passed stories that draws you in. Eloise is a great character and shows so much strength and love. I kept reading because I wanted her to have her happily ever after. That being said, I didn’t love Harald and I really wanted to. I just wished he would have pulled his head out sooner. I get it though, then you’d have a 100 page book. I get that men were brutal in the first century, heck many still are, but he was definitely abusive so it was difficult to completely enjoy this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 31, 2024I love a good read that tugs at your heartstrings. Sometimes romance novels become repetitive, luckily this story comes from left field with something a bit unique.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 9, 2024So much action. So much evil and frustrating.
Hero didn't deserve her love until end of book. Wanted to punch him and slap him and beat him up. What a sweet ending for little girl and boy. In the end good reading
- Reviewed in the United States on April 1, 2021My first time reading this author and boy am I glad I did. I am a fan of hers for good after this amazing story. It deserves more than 5 stars.
I was on the edge of my seat through the entire book. What a whirlwind that took many turns and shock waves rippled at times. A rocky beginning for Eloise and Harald who are 2 emotionally challenged characters to say the least leads us further along into this exciting sometimes terrifying story. At times I wanted to reach in the pages and grab each one of them and shack some sense into them especially Harald. The author deals with a very touchy subject and she did it extremely well. Many emotional moments that had me shed some tears.
There were warriors, jousts, intimate scenes, bit of humor, terror, evil villains, and more. The story had me captivated and the end was heartfelt with a wonderful Epilogue to top the story to a HEA.
I can't say enough about how much I truly enjoyed reading this story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Five + for this book
This is my first Emily Royal book I shall certainly read more. What a wonderful heroine,so strong able to return to the love of her life even after. She had been physically and emotionally abused. Took a long time for Haarlem to come into his own but h e finally made it. This book is so emotionally intense it brought me to tears A must read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good plot disappointing Hero.
I enjoyed the plot and the general story. The writing flowed easily and ran like a movie in my head. But I struggled with the Hero. Harald had no redeemable qualities about him, I struggled to like him. And I tried. I’ve read many Mills & Boon characters, many romances where the men were awful - but they had redeemable qualities and moments that made your heart ache. Moments that made you love them. I could not love Harald. In every way he was a disappointing Hero and I wished Eloise ended up with his brother instead.

4.0 out of 5 stars A past revelation.
At last a story revealing history at a most brutal point. With a tender insights. Makes for interesting reading. Well told, moved along to make a story believable. Even if we know such outcomes only happened in storylines. Looking forward to next book.
