The Scattered and the Dead (Book 2.0): Post Apocalyptic Fiction Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 349 ratings

Bring out your dead. The Scattered and the Dead series continues with 632 more pages of post-apocalyptic survival.

With 99.7% of the population dead and gone for coming up on six months, what's left of humanity is scarred, sinewy, whittled into something lean and hard. But the scattered survivors are still here.

Life goes on. Something like life, anyway.

The worst of their first post-apocalyptic winter may be behind them, but the scattered enter spring with dwindling supplies. Some will fortify their current residences and double down on their scavenging efforts. Others will leave all behind to journey into the unknown.

But violence and death wait behind all corners in the empty world. Every crossing of paths turns to conflict. Every choice carries the weight of life and death.

Not all will survive these encounters.

Catch up with Erin, Izzy, Baghead, Delfino, Ray, Lorraine and more as the Scattered and the Dead saga continues to unfold.
BOOK 2.0 picks up where BOOK 1.5 left off.

This Series Just Keeps getting Better
There is nothing better than the release of a book that you've been waiting for. Holding on with bated breath until you have another few hundred pages of the characters you're invested in. I'm talking about that elation-inducing feeling of getting your hands on the next book in a series that you can't stop thinking about, and that's exactly how I felt when The Scattered and the Dead Book 2.0 was released. Throwing readers back into the post-apocalyptic world overrun by zombies, McBain and Vargus have exuded class, showing once again, just how talented this writing duo is at creating characters that sit with you well after the last page. There's something classic about their style. Their stories glow with well thought out storylines that bring their characters to life. Simple exchanges between characters coupled with scenes of basic survival make this series memorable and is exactly why this duo are on their way to literary success. Four books into this series (Check out the others here) and the story is only getting better. This novel follows the journey of the characters we have grown to love (or hate) and takes the story further into this post-apocalyptic world. One of the most enticing themes of this series is the take on people perception of others, particularly, how each character views others. What may be even more noteworthy is the way McBain and Vargus force the reader's perception of these characters a certain way, making me wonder: Do I really know anything about these people? This series has everything you want. Engaging scenes that steal you, characters that you'll never forget, time hops from the beginning of the end all the way through to years after the apocalypse, six degrees of separation. And zombies. The whole package. Forget what you know about the overdone zombie apocalypse. This series has re-invented the genre. This series, and particularly this instalment, is bold. Edge of your seat exciting. Well written and everything the post apocalyptic genre needs.

The Scattered And The Dead Series is my favorite post-apocalyptic fiction since The Stand and Book 2 is the best installment in the series thus far. These books came along when I was becoming jaded with this type of fiction and made me fall in love with it all over again. As I'm an extremely avid but picky reader, that's saying alot. The entire series is absolutely delicious, but THIS book is even tastier! It is McBain and Vargus' character development that makes these books so special. From a man named Baghead whose hidden face is as mysterious as the journey he's on and the "Five" who will do anything to stop him, to a pyromaniac psychotic killer named Teddy who sees the new world as his own personal playground, to a tough young girl named Izzy and her protectors Erin and The Squirrelman, to the ultra mysterious Father and many more, the characters are each wonderfully unique and totally juicy! (Especially the zombies...they're REALLY juicy.) Book 2 takes the reader on a thrill ride between characters and points in time from a few months to almost a decade "AFTER." This frequent shift in character and time provides an added level of mystery and suspense, especially since it is still not fully clear what AFTER is after. If you haven't read a book in this series yet, now is the perfect time to start! Get ready for an all nighter because once you start reading it, you'll gobble it up in one sitting, and when you finish you'll be anxiously waiting for the next course! Did I mention there were zombies? Give yourself a treat and pick this book up now! Even better, treat yourself to the whole series!

I like this series. The last 25% of the book the story really gets moving.
The two biggest things that i had trouble wrapping my head around involve Erin and Izzy. When Erin is chasing izzy thru town she was fatigued abs unable to catch Izzy. My problrm with that is that she is much older. Her muscles and stamina would have been infinitly more developed meaning that she should have easily caught Izzy, but she didn't. Even taking into account Erinns lack of sleep and Izzys mad on she still should have been able to catch her before they left the monument. Setting that aside her stepping into the trap only makes sense if the whole road is covered in fallen leaves. As animals we would instinctively not step where we couldn't see. With Erin running at full speed she would have swerved or jumped over it to avoid stepping into the unknown.

From a virtual cornucopia of available post apocalyptic zombie fiction, the Scattered and the Dead series is the worm that crawls out from the others and wriggles it's way into your mashed potatoes. I truly believe this is the finest work to date from McBain and Vargus, containing just the right amounts of action, pathos, and introspection to deliver a full blown, five star read. The slowly converging plots of all the characters involved is only a bonus compared to their individual story lines, but knowing and having become invested in some of the characters from the previous books served to fill the entire book with dread. I hoped against hope that they wouldn't, no, surely, the authors wouldn't be so cruel as to... oh, they would? Perhaps I had forgotten who the authors were at some point, but let's just say that, yes; all your worse fears come true. What was I thinking? I found this entry in the series completely enjoyable to read, written, as it seems, in a fashion easier for the reader, less confusing somehow. The painstaking introspection that both elevated and mired some of the earlier works by this pair has been dialed down to a level that compliments the rest of the writing well, or the drama and suspense have been dialed up. Either way it works brilliantly, and has culminated in a novel that is terribly difficult to put down! If I had not suffered an untimely virus of my own the day it was released, I'm sure I would have read it straight through, but, as it was, it was a perfect companion to NyQuil, soup and tea.
While you could enjoy this book as a one off, I assure you the preceding titles of the series will add so much to your appreciation of the story. I implore the authors for more of the series, and with haste!

Great story, dystopia of apocalyptic America or (any country)! Hard not to reflect on what may happen in this next election if Trump and his rabble become leaders of the free world.....we may just be facing this scenario! Better read up on how to survive just in case! But all kidding aside, it's a great series, must read if you love the unknown futuristic stories. I loved the whole series, Tim and LT are fun authors with tongue in cheek humor!

5.0 out of 5 stars TSATD Book 2 - Or how to Kill Zombies and Influence People!!
Reviewed in Australia on September 12, 2016
Here we are again, back into the amazing post-apocalyptic world lovingly crafted by Tim and Lex. With the novella's in-between fleshing out and introducing some of the characters we get in these full numbered books, you really start to sympathize, if not empathize with the people left behind from the grand-mal of all apocalypses, with zombies, disease, nuclear fallout and the baser instincts of human nature to contend with, the slightly un-balanced become monsters and the nice guy always seems to finish at the bottom of the heap.

As always, Tim and Lex do a great job of sucking you in to the multiple story lines and people, making each character distinct within their own right with only their trademark descriptors bleeding through from chapter to chapter. The suspense they built and drama within the world and characters as they start to cross paths in ways that have your heart beating is on par with anything written by Stephen King, Dean Koontz or James Patterson with of course the twists and turns we have come to expect by this great writing team.

This is so much more than just another zombie story. This series uses the zombie apocalypse to really look into what makes us human and how different people would react to a completely changed world.

Really beautifully written and insightful with great characters.
This whole series is a great read and volume 2 is the best yet. Can't wait for the next book.
