- Reviewed in the United States on December 31, 2022I just finished Ms Fortin’s The Dead Wife prior to reading this book. Both are well worth the time to read. I found The Dead Wife to be one of the best books I have read in a long time. This book follows close behind but was much more disturbing as you will never know, you can only speculate who really did what to whom!! The question is: was it really worth it in the end. I will let you read it and decide for yourself who was really guilty.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 7, 2019Since when is it correct to say, "Her and Libby have eaten tea and are watching a film"? I have found this "her and. . ." business three times now in this book. Or is it taboo only in American English? I was taught to say, "SHE and . . ." Not really sure I'm going to finish this one, as I haven't found one character to be likable.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 14, 2019This was one crazy ride - super twists and turns. Wasn't sure if was coming or going. Totally captivating and kept me guessing. Wasn't totally sure about who did the kidnapping and was surprised by the ending.

By Sue Fortin
** publication date 10 January 2019 **
Goodreads has this listed as the most gripping page turner of 2019. I don’t know that I’d go that far, but I will say that it definitely is a page turner.
Neve is a 30 something adoptive mother of Poppy. Poppy is mentally challenged. We never quite know how, but she definitely doesn’t have the emotional development of a 14 year old girl. Kit is Poppy’s father. Kit lost his wife in the childbirth of Poppy, and now refuses to even discuss the possibility of future children with Neve. Neve is hiding something from Kit, but wanting a child is not her secret.
Kit works in boat sales and is quite successful. They have a beautiful home in a beautiful small community. Kit is married to his job and Neve is married to him. Neve takes primary care for the household and Poppy at Kit’s urging. But Neve doesn’t feel fulfilled. No matter how much she cares for Poppy, she wants a child of her own.
On a family boating trip, Neve and Kit drink a bit too much and wake to discover Poppy is missing. Being that Poppy is not completely sound of mind, this is even more worrisome. The police are called, fliers are made and handed out. Kit is beside himself. Neve tries to keep it together. But do all the pieces add up?
I found the beginning of the book a bit slow, but once it picked up speed, I couldn’t wait to hear how this one turned out. If you enjoy the Gone Girl type of mystery/thriller, this one is for you. It’s somewhat dark, and somewhat sad, but it keeps the mind working to figure out just exactly what’s happening here. I would definitely recommend this one.

I have read and liked several books by Sue Fortin, and “Schoolgirl Missing” keeps that streak going. The characters are well-developed, although the only one who was at all likeable was Poppy. This book is less about Poppy going missing (it was only a few days) and more about the secrets everyone is keeping.
Overall, Neve has made some very poor decisions in her past, but her current life with her husband Kit and Poppy, who Neve adopted when she and Kit married, seems great except for one thing. Neve would like a biological child of her own, and Kit is dead-set against it. Neve’s obsession leads to additional poor decisions as a result.
I thought the book took a while to get to the schoolgirl missing part, and the ending was a little too convoluted for my liking. That said, one of this author’s strengths is her ability to guide you in one direction, and just when you think you have it figured out, she makes you realize that you were completely wrong. I won’t give anything away because that wouldn’t be fair.
I received a free digital copy of this title from NetGalley and HarperCollins UK in exchange for an honest review.

This is very cleverly written. You can't work out who is good or bad. Lots of twists. A good read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Page-turning read that will keep you guessing!
I do love a Sue Fortin book and this was no exception. Hideously flawed characters I loved to hate but was also deeply intrigued by. You will want to fly through this to find out the truth and it's a truth that will have your jaw-dropping. Highly recommended for fans of B A Paris.

4.0 out of 5 stars Definitely different but still as gripping
I've always enjoyed Sue Fortin's books. This one is slightly different. There are no likeable characters. They all present one face to the world while behind the mask is something entirely different. Despite a lack of people to empathise with, the story still held me all the way through. I had to know how things would play out. There are casualties a plenty in Schoolgirl Missing but definitely no winners.
