Clive Mullis (1958-still going) spent his formative years in Hemel Hempstead before moving to Bedfordshire shortly after getting married. After spending time as a paramedic he developed an emergency worker's type sense of humour; a little bit black and a little bit off the wall. The consequence of this is that he enjoys writing quirky stories.

5.0 out of 5 stars Inventive, paradoxical and scatological

I was given a copy of Clive's first book 'Banker's Draft' by my younger son, also a Pratchett fan, and which I thoroughly enjoyed - enough to purchase the two sequels.
'Twearth' and 'Gornstock' are places created in the mind of the author, who must surely at some time have read Terry Pratchett's Discworld, although the period concerned is a little later in time than events in Ankh-Morpork.
The characterisations are excellent, with much made of officious jobsworthdom no doubt gleaned from his own real-life experiences as a paramedic. This novel addresses the problems that misogynistic males in a male-dominated society suffer when women, and especially very attractive and clever women, begin to exercise their rights and gain positions of authority.
Without giving too much away, the presence of a talking (or should that be talking back?) cat, dwarves, talking bears and suchlike in a city ruled by the sons of Morris Dancers allows plenty of scope for imagination and creative havoc.
Nevertheless, after novel twists and turns, the protagonists eventually prevail and celebrate at their favourite hostelry.

4.0 out of 5 stars Decent improvement over book 1

This second book I enjoyed much more than book 1. The innuendo in the conversation is still there but this time it is part of the story because it is about overcoming sexist, misogynistic, "traditional" views inside the Gornstock policy force. More precisely the introduction of female coppers and some elements of the force are really not happy about this. The humour was a bit better written and the characters more also a little bit more elaborate and fun.

I was positively surprised at the direction the story took. Now I am going to read book 3 soon.

I enjoyed this book even more than the first - and I really enjoyed that. The characters react as you might expect and the story is a page-turner. The only negative side is that I've finished it and can't wait for the next instalment. [Hi Clive - do you need a proofreader - free and willing?]

Another very enjoyable story. Only 2 problems - I finished it too quickly and there is as yet not a 3rd book to grab!
