Attila, king of the Huns, the scourge of God, leads a horde across the Rhine. A hundred thousand strong, they ravage the heartland of Roman Gaul — killing, and burning as they go.
Flavius Aetius, Master of Soldiers, hurries north, gathering a host from all the kingdoms of the West. Halga battles at the eye of the storm as Western civilisation fights to survive, and in a lightning campaign of bloodshed and brutality the invaders are repulsed.

About the author

Cliff May is a writer of historical fiction, working primarily in the early Middle Ages. He has always had a love of history which led to an early career in conservation work.
Using the knowledge and expertise gained Cliff moved with his family through a succession of dilapidated houses which he single-handedly renovated. These ranged from a Victorian townhouse to a Fourteenth Century hall, and he added childcare to his knowledge of medieval oak frame repair, wattle and daub and lime plastering.
Cliff crewed the replica of Captain Cook’s ship, Endeavour, sleeping in a hammock and sweating in the sails and travelled the world, visiting such historic sites as the Little Big Horn, Leif Eriksson’s Icelandic birthplace, the Roman Forum, and the bullet-scarred walls of Berlin’s Reichstag.
Now he writes, only a stone's throw from the Anglian ship burial site at Sutton Hoo in East Anglia, England.

REVIEW
Well now, that is quite the adventure Halga experiences in this tale of revenge. A revenge that finds him part of the great battle against Attila. I really enjoyed the way the author incorporated the many lands involved in this world shaking event. Jutes, Angles, Franks, Goths(Visi & Ostra), Huns....yes quite a collection all exquisitely described in manner and action. Another facet that the author nails is the camaraderie between Halga and his oath sworn men, and with one remarkable Hun warrior. Prepare yourselves my fellow readers to be immersed in the cataclysmic meeting of The Scourge of God and the forces of the West. Be sure to have your shield raised against the sun-blotting launch of Hunnish arrows.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 8, 2022This book has all the parts of a historical fiction you look for with great pacing and solid characterization. I especially liked the fact it wasn't predictable as books like this can be.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 2, 2023Aside from a monotonous description of every part of turning their ships the books was very readable. The story was very solid and the suspenseful parts were tense and tightly written.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 10, 2022Jutes, Angles, Franks and Huns. Strange alliance and even stranger bonds bind them all together. For, vengeance, for gold, silver and glory. Sometimes events beyond one's control thows a man into the path of events of larger historical significance and this is one such tale.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant.
Cliff May is one of the best historical fiction writers out there.
I have read all of his novels and every single one has gripped me from the first page to the last.
Halga Hunding escapes by the skin of his teeth the murder of his father and his oathsworn warriors.
Revenge is on his mind, but he has to prove himself in battle and make his name before he can claim that revenge culminating in a huge battle against Atilla and his Huns. He fights alongside the Saxons Horsa and Hengist, legendary characters themselves and learns how to become a drihten, a lord of means with his own oathsworn.
I'm hoping this is the first in a new series because i'm already impatient to read the next.
I cannot recommend this highly enough. Once you read one of the authors books, you're going to read them all, that I guarantee you. Brilliant, awesome, gripping, the superlatives are endless.
If you love historical fiction, you'll love Cliff May.

5.0 out of 5 stars Teenage kicks
Driven from his homeland by a devastating attack on his family, young Halga Hunding gains vengeance on the killers via the cataclysmic battle of Chalons in Gaul. The story is gripping, but it was the character development that set it apart for me. Halga and his men are teenage lads, with the mix of self-doubt and bravado that comes with that age. We get to witness the main character forced to discard the care-free mantle of a pampered youth in a way that brings to mind the young Henry V a thousand years later. Not all the boys make it — physically or mentally. The action is frequent and the descriptions first-rate. The big battle against Attila and his gigantic army is wonderfully described — you really feel like you are there as hoofs thunder and arrows fly, and the ending imaginative and satisfying. A great read.
