The story picks up five years after Izzy's baby, Alys, is kidnapped by her father, Charlie. Izzy comes out of a mental dog and takes up the cause of her daughter's unknown whereabouts. Her love for her daughter is touching and she has fond memories of her time with Charlie. There are twists and turns that I didn't see coming. Recommend!!!

Very interesting premise, it just feels like the author kind of rushed it. Pembrokeshire was really written in detail and the characters were good.

I received this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

Just the right book, I like a short absorbing read between heavy ones, this was it. Fast moving, lots of twist. I plan to read the series.

Having read and loved the author's book The Stepsister, I dipped my toe into Silent Cry with a little trepidation. Would I feel the same, or would it be like tasting a favourite dish from childhood, only to discover my palate had changed?
Thankfully, this opener to a series featuring DC Gaby Darin totally satisfied my appetite. A gripping start — a young woman happily lets her partner and tiny baby go to the shops — and the unthinkable happens. A postcard confirms her worst fears (well, not her worst, but the author cleverly keeps us guessing throughout), and we fast-forward five years. A cold case that's about to heat up as faces from the past materialise and we are thrown several curve balls as to what really happened to Izzy's loved ones.
So many good lines to be found: Grief was all very well but only when it was the dignified sort. A gentle sniff. A surreptitious eye wipe with the corner of a tissue. It was red-rimmed eyes and the gut-wrenching ache that started in the belly only to lodge in the back of the throat.
Deep sorrow always shows, you know. It's there in the back of the eyes, lingering like a bad memory.
Yes, there are layers of grief within, but all handled beautifully and — as for the ending — I truly didn't see it coming. Eagerly looking forward to Book 2, Darkest Night.

    Unexpected Killer Of An Ending!

Izzy Grant has a newborn baby and is exhausted by the all the sleepless nights and round the clock feedings, so her boyfriend Charlie decides to take baby Alys out for a few hours to give Izzy a well needed break and to get a little rest. Charlie and Alys never came home that day and they were never seen again, although Izzy did receive a postcard from Charlie that Alys was safe with him but they were not coming home. Days turned into weeks, then months of continuous searching and no sign of them or even their minivan Fast forward five years, Izzy is still grieving the loss of her child and has been in a depressed state of mind yet never giving up on finding her little girl again. One day she spots her old best friend Grace in the village but Grace doesn't acknowledge her and Izzy remembers how hurt and angry she was that Grace left town without a word the day or two after Alys and Charlie disappeared. Izzy reports the sighting to the hard-working and we'll respected DI Rhys Walker who worked endlessly trying to solve this case and now he will do everything in his power to help Izzy find out what happened to her precious daughter and the man who took her away.

This was a very good story taking place in Wales. The first half of the book moved a little slow but then picked up and there were twists that I didn't see coming. I really enjoyed this book and was really pleased with the unexpected ending. I hope to read other books by Jenny O'Brien in the near future.

I want to thank the publisher HQ and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this terrific detective mystery and any opinions expressed are unbiased and mine alone!

I highly recommend this book and have given a rating of 4 Unexpected 🌟🌟🌟🌟 Stars!!

Five years ago, Izzy’s boyfriend left the house with their baby girl to give her a bit of a break. And they didn’t come back. After frantically searching the house, Izzy found a card that had been popped through the door, stating, ‘Alys is fine. Don’t try to find us.’ But having pulled herself through five years of wondering, worrying and sleepless nights, Izzy catches sight of a face from the past, and the search continues.

With Gabriella Darin, a police officer with her own difficult past, newly transferred from Cardiff, now on the case, surely it won’t be long before Izzy has some idea of where Charlie went and what happened to their family.

The writing is stunning. Addictive. I couldn’t put it down. It’s rare I’ll go without sleep, I went without sleep for this one. The characters were sympathetic without hitting you over the head with their misery. The scenery was stunning and I loved the story. Really well crafted with a surprising finish that’s bound to stay with me for a good long time. I’m off to find the rest of the series now.

‘Real sorrow was all snot and snivelling. It was red-rimmed eyes and the gut-wrenching ache that started in the belly only to lodge at the back of the throat. There was nothing glamorous about someone in the throes of misery, nothing at all.’
Chapter 22, Silent Cry (Gabriella Darin #1) by Jenny O’Brien

Amen to that. This is an awesome book. Go, read it.

4.0 out of 5 stars A twisty, relatable, entertaining read
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 13, 2020
I was so excited to start this as I moved to Wales a few years ago and since have found only a handful of Welsh crime authors. The characterisation is spot on, as is the police procedure. It's more of a slow burn psychological crime thriller, as the detectives story is told alternately. It begins with a prologue detailing the day the protagonist's baby daughter is stolen by her father and reported missing then continues five years on. With no sightings or evidence of where Charlie took the baby, her best friend having run off immediately following their disappearance, and there's mysterious postcards appearing through her letterbox warning her off searching it's obvious there are some leads that weren't pursued at the time, then the car they disappeared in is discovered, and what follows are red herrings, twists, surprises, and shocking revelations, the final on being totally unexpected. The ending was perfect, if sad. It's well-written, and I had no idea what would happen next. Although DC Gaby Darin's story is told throughout she doesn't become a larger part of the investigation until the end, but I've pre-ordered the next title in the series and hope she has a more starring role in that one.

Yet another great book from Jenny - first thriller, but she does deliver what ever she does.
Izzy Grant lost her baby Alys and baby's father Charlie after they went out to give Izzy a little bit of rest. They never came back. Izzy never gave up looking for them and now after 5 years the things are starting to happen e.g. she suddenly bumps into Grace Madden who she met at the time she was pregnant with Alys. Does Grace have something to do with it? DI Rhys Walker has been in charge of the investigation of the disappearance from the beginning. Now he gets a new partner DC Gaby Darin and things start progressing from here. The story keeps you in hooks, there are so many twists and turns. How it ends... you just have to read it! As always Jenny has a cat character there as well, this time Bucket. I highly recommend this book and looking forward to next in the series.

This book would probably have been better if it had been a little shorter, I felt it dragged on a bit and guessed the identity and motive of the murderer well before the end but altogether a reasonably entertaining read.
