Scythian Trilogy Book 2: The Golden King Kindle Edition

4.1 4.1 out of 5 stars 83 ratings

Captured by the warlike, tribal Scythians who bicker amongst themselves and bitterly resent outside interference, a fiercely loyal captain in Alexander the Great's Companion Cavalry Nikometros and his men are to be sacrificed to the Mother Goddess. Lucky chance--and the timely intervention of Tomyra, priestess and daughter of the Massegetae chieftain--allows him to defeat the Champion. With their immediate survival secured, acceptance into the tribe…and escape…is complicated by the captain's growing feelings for Tomyra--death to any who touch her--and the chief's son Areipithes who not only detests Nikometros and wants to have him killed or banished but intends to murder his own father and take over the tribe.

The chief of the tribe of nomadic Scythian horsemen is dead, killed by his son's treachery. The priestess, lover of the young cavalry officer, Nikometros, is carried off into the mountains. Nikometros and his friends set off in hard pursuit.
Death rides with them. By the time they return, the tribes are at war. Nikometros must choose between attempting to become chief himself or leaving the people he's come to love and respect to return to his duty as an army officer in the Empire of Alexander.

Background based on fact. Brings out the influence that Alexander the Great had on the known world, Also how even more than 2 centuries ago the racial mix was probably as much as it is today.

This is the second in the trilogy and the action unfolds pretty much in a similar vein to the original. If you enjoyed Scythia 1, then Scythia 2 will likely please.
The grudges created in book one are taken to the second stage in this book as the tribes gather in their respective groups to manoeuvre (rather puzzlingly since no maps were in my Kindle version) across the vast grassy plains of Scythia. The author a pretty good scene-setter and his descriptions of the truly lousy weather on the plains was so convincing, the constant daily ration of driving rain, snow, sleet, high winds and extreme cold almost depressed me. Scythia was never going to be the tourist centre of ancient times.
The assisted wanderings of the pretty much permanently ill "Lion" character Nikometros take very much second place to the conflict between the unpredictable Parasades (arguably the star of this book) and the usurper king Areipithes. After a number of minor battles and conflicts accounts are suitably and satisfactorily settled.
Again, good English, few typos, and action served up with an acceptable amount of gore. The third in the trilogy has the makings of a more interesting book since our heroes are finally moving off those awful plains to go South to Babylon, and Alexander the Great. I will likely follow.

Anyone who loved the Scarab series will also enjoy this trilogy. Max Overton is a genius - waited for the sixth Scarab book impatiently and was delighted to the Scythian Trilogy to add to my library.

When I reviewed the first book in this series I was very critical but was encouraged when the author actually contacted me and encouraged me to read the rest of the series. I have now completed the second book and was impressed by the great story line. Many thanks Max keep on writing. As soon as I get a minute will read thenext one.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good read

I thought it was a good read and went through the three books quite quickly. Of course, for me the ultimate Alexander books are those by Mary Renault and I don't think they have ever been equalled, but this trilogy was an interesting slant on that period. I'm not quite sure about trying to put the blame for Alexander's death on a Roman though! Interesting idea.

The whole trilogy is a bit overlong and daft in parts and historically way out!!

It is more of a love story than hiostoritcal fiction.

I managed to get through to the end though nearly gave up a couple of times.

The author has produced another well written adventure set in a slightly different region and era.
This is a good page turner and is building nicely towards the final instalment.
