About the authors
I was born in England and grew up there and in the Netherlands. I later lived for a couple of years in Japan and travelled widely in Asia, but have spent most of my adult life in Australia, where I work as a historian and writer. Nowadays I divide my time between a small village on the south coast of New South Wales and Canberra, where I am Emeritus Professor of Japanese History at the Australian National University. Travelling in Northeast Asia - particularly Japan, Korea and Sakhalin - are among my passions, and I love writing and reading both academic history and historical novels, walking on the beach, kayaking and snorkelling. My most recent academic books are 'Japan's Living Politics' (Cambridge University Press, 2020) and 'One the Frontiers of History' (Australian National University Press, 2020), and I have published two historical crime novels – 'The Searcher' – set in 19th century London, and most recently 'The Lantern Boats', set in Japan during the postwar occupation (both published by Joffe Books).
On this page you can find photos of White Lion Street, Norton Folgate (now called Folgate Street), where the courthouse at the centre of the ''The Searcher' once stood, and of the Iwasaki Mansion, where key events in 'The Lantern Boats' take place. If you have a chance, you can explore both places yourself. Dennis Severs' House in Folgate Street - https://www.dennissevershouse.co.uk/ - gives an amazing insight into the world of Ada Flint and her contemporaries, while the Iwasaki Mansion house and gardens near Tokyo's Ueno Park are also open to the public - https://ueno-bunka.jp/en/facilities/kyu-iwasaki-tei/
You can also find a video on the background to my earlier book 'To the Diamond Mountains: A Hundred Year Journey through China and Korea' (Rowman and Littlefield, 2010) at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2pymdjVMVjE.
I have loved both history and mysteries ever since I was a small child growing up in rural England. Since then I have lived in the Netherlands and Japan and have travelled widely, particularly in Asia, but have spent most of my adult life in Australia. I now work as a historian and divide my time between a small village on the south coast of New South Wales and Canberra.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 24, 2021A beautifully written story based on a few facts of the authors great, great, great, great grandmother's life in 1800s London! A mystery for sure and interesting but gripping may be a bit exaggerated!!
I liked the story and the mystery very much but it was rather a gloomy, sad story! No doubt, as were the times, for these particular families!
The author writes wonderfully, poetically and I will be looking for more!!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 18, 2020Some resemblance to other Victorian novels. There are too many innuendos that are never developed. While the author concludes with the explanation all is imagination, he/she doesn't ever explain. For example, what is the relationship among Adah, Rapheal, and Sally?
- Reviewed in the United States on May 27, 2020Enjoyed this story of Adah Flint working as a "Searcher" which was an actual title and seems to be a person that investigates possible crimes. With her husband dead and six children to raise Adah must leave her spacious home and move into a tiny tenement. Nevertheless Adah continues investigating who a well dressed six or seven year old dead girl could be. The sights sounds and attitudes of 19th century London are eerily present throughput this convoluted and intriguing story.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 30, 2021This novel is very hard to follow the storytelling. I was leasing to a audible and ended up rereading thru out the novel. The flipping back into different time period. So much drama with multiple character. However , if you enjoy a mystery that had to have a chapter to explain the crime. Read the last two chapters and than start reading the novel. Because it is a worthy read.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 17, 2020This is the first historical book I've read. It was brilliantly written. The description of the town, it's streets and people was so well written I could literally picture myself walking down these streets.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 14, 2020I thought this was a very good story. It had quite a few twists and turns. I was shocked about the outcome of the twins. I would have like to have known if Adah and Raphael got together.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 28, 2021. . . .that such history continues every day, every where. The question is not that society learns about history, but rather is society willing not to continue historical acts. What society learns is the measure of civilization. Tessa Morris-Suzuki has created - shared - an amazing mystery.

5.0 out of 5 stars Everybody should read this book.
This is the first book , I have read by T.J.Alexander and what a book to start with. The characters are very engaging and you will definitely be drawn in to the page's as you read. The narrative flows in a way that you will loose yourself completely.
A very highly recommended read.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Searcher
Love, love, love this book! A must read. I was transported back in time, and when away from the book was anxious to be back to find out what was happening. Beautifully written with pure magic in some of those wonderfully descriptive sentences. I’ll definitely be seeking more books by this insightful author.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent writer
This is a well written book by someone who has definietly honed her craft. The descriptions are clear, with some lovely imagery, while not feeling intrusive or forced like so many books. The history is well researched but adapted to this tragic, but fascinationg story. It illustrates well the injustices, bigotry and sexism of the period (may of which still persist) and has it's moments of triumph and sadness. Well done Tessa, I look forward to reading more of your books.

4.0 out of 5 stars Searcher
An interesting tale of the past when the country was evolving, too slowly, into the.modern civilisation that we have today. The law and those charged with keeping it were not infalible and in some cases were downright criminal

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and moving story
This will become a film and it will win a bucket load of oscars. Very very well written story about a tragic case of child stealing in 1815 london. There is a slight mystery here and we follow these believable characters as they try, in their own small way, to understand just what happened. This is a beautifully told story with real emotive characters living in a very imperfect world and all they want to do is understand. Beautiful book. I just totally loved it
