Secret Admirer (Love Notes Book 1) Kindle Edition
Benji,
I want you to know how amazing you are. You won't believe me, because I'm just your brother's best friend, but it’s true. Each day my feelings for you grow, confusing but undeniable.
With a few anonymous love tokens, I finally have an outlet for all the things I can't say. And with each gift and note, you smile. For me. Not your brother's straight friend, but something new. Something more. Something that will change everything if we can both find the courage to believe.
All I have to do is confess who I really am:

- Reviewed in the United States on June 25, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseRedhaired, anime-loving, shy Benji is trying to navigate being 200 miles away from home. His brother Jeremy had it all planned out- he would be there to help Benji learn the way of college life. However he was given an opportunity elsewhere, leaving Benji without his lifeline; enter Ace. Ace has been best friends with Jeremy for years, and both were attending the same college. Now without Jeremy around, Ace steps up to take on the titular role of "big brother" for Benji. That is until Benji gets stood up on his first date. Ace decides he will put a smile on Benji's face by sending him sweet notes and gifts from his secret admirer. What started out as something kind and sweet, has led Ace questioning his true feelings about his best friend's younger brother - could this be love?
Hands down this has been one of my favorite reads this year! Everything about this book just did it for me. The best-friend's brother, friends-to-lovers and bi-sexual awakening tropes all have an integral part in this novel and I am here for it!
Both, Ace and Benji grew up in different backgrounds and Jamison crafted their personalities as such. Ace basically equated to "trailer trash" while being the quinesstential frat boy had much more depth then on the surface. The author dives into these stereotypes that the eye focuses on and pulls in what the characters hide underneath. So despite these surface visibilities, it is evident that this label of "trailer trash" has really impacted Ace's confidence in himself and his ability to pursue a relationship with Benji. We also see how despite looking the part of the cocky frat boy, Ace is anything but. He is kind, and sweet; he usually is the sober candidate at frat parties monitoring guests to make sure they're okay; and he's wearing the friendship bracelet Benji gave him years ago. Benji has other insecurities, steaming from his small stature, slight bullying in high school and being stood up on his first date. He also lacks confidence in himself, believing he is not worthy of someone like Ace. Despite both of their hang-ups Ace and Benji compliment each other very well.
I was very engrossed in this novel and I hope that we can see other novels in this universe; maybe a novel about Jonas; hint, hint. :D
- Reviewed in the United States on May 19, 2024Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis story has a trope that I haven’t read often—the secret admirer. Paired with the brother’s bff trope, it’s a fun premise. Especially as it is the brother’s bff who is the secret admirer. Both Benji and Ace are really sweet genuine guys. Benji, the younger brother, has some self-esteem issues and doesn’t think Ace, his brother’s best friend, could ever like him, and not just because Ace is presumed to be straight. Ace has been lightly bi-curious until his best friend’s brother starts at the same university when that bi-curiosity ramps up into a full blown crush.
The story has a lovely warmth and cheerfulness to it. It’s definitely low angst, with these guys being head over heels for each other and just fumbling along trying to get together, stumbling over their insecurities. I like how their relationship develops slowly and that Ace’s concerns about dating Benji aren’t all about his relationship with his bff. Benji is only eighteen in this story, and so he can be a bit immature, but he grow throughout the story, learning to be less self-centered.
My issue with the story is that in some ways I didn’t really get why Ace was so in love with Benji—I would have liked to see more that they had in common or something.
Still, it is a sweet fun read that kept my interest the whole time. Plus, I loved that there is an epilogue that is years in the future.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 27, 2020Format: KindleVerified PurchaseSecret Admirer is a college, bi-sexual awakening, best friend’s brother love story and it hits all the right notes. Benji and Ace are lovely (especially Ace *swoon*) and they have great chemistry and connection that you can feel coming off the page. There are steamy scenes that are just right in their level of detail and the emotional treatment of Benji’s inexperience and Ace’s bisexuality is expertly handled. It’s not too heavy-handed, light on the angst, but altogether authentic.
There’s a purity and “rightness” about Ace and Benji’s relationship that resonates, and the events and the character’s actions and reactions are described with just the right balance of information to picture the scene, understand what is happening and how the characters feel about it, but not so much that you are told what to think and how to feel about it all. You are given the freedom as the reader to interpret and feel, and that’s the hallmark of a great book. If I just wanted everything spelled out, I’d read a dictionary.
The author has created an aura of happiness and warmth with this couple; as you are reading, you’ll find yourself smiling, because they are loveable and feel right together. The discord from the reaction of Jeremy (Benji’s brother) to Benji and Ace’s relationship also was treated in a believable way. It wasn’t too extreme or over the top, but struck a chord of reality - that this is something that could happen in everyday life. The fraternity element added some external sources of conflict, and humor, to the story which I really enjoyed.
I had read this book a while ago and didn’t review at the time, which I should have because I loved it. I reread it now in connection with the audiobook narrated by the fabulous Darcy Stark. Listening to the audio and hearing the spot-on voicing of Benji and Ace made me remember why I loved the book the first time, and marvel at how much better even a great book can get when paired with a talented narrator. I highly highly recommend you both read and listen to this gem of a story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Secret decisions
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis was an adorably sweet romance that had so much fun with a couple of tropes (best friend's sibling, secret admirer) and made a great connection between its leads after some serious effort!
Benji moved to a further away college because he was convinced by his older brother. Determined to reinvent himself into the new artistic Benjamin, he instead finds he is still the same guy in a different setting. Most disappointing is his lack of game in getting anywhere with guys. The only person who is nice about it is Ace, his brothers best friend and first crush. But Benji can't see beyond everything he knows and pushes away Ace from anything else that might be going on.
Ace has worked really hard to get out of the life he had growing up. Now in his last year of college as things get serious he finds himself more serious about other things as well. Looking out for Benji is no hardship, and seeing the kid grown up into a gorgeous man makes has him wanting to explore a side to his sexuality he never has before. But Ace doesn't want anything with Benji to just be about exploring, not willing to risk their friendship. When Ave tries to make any sort of overture towards Benji though, it gets brushed off as 'brotherly duty'. Trying to get beyond that Ace becomes his secret admirer and it leads down some unexpected avenues.
The secret admirer bit was fun because it is so ridiculous and so sweet, but can also be creepy. The story plays into all those facets. It really is just meant to be sweet as Ace wants to boost Benji up. Since Benji refuses to hear anything Ace says, the poor decision of being an anonymous gift giver actually has some good reasoning. The messages are also sweet and innocuous. But there is the creepy element of whether or not this is someone stalking or with something to hide, which quickly brings to light the poor idea part of it. Add to it all that Benji is flattered, but also bound and determined to find the sender rather than just have the sweet messages and it causes some strife for the two men.
It was really enjoyable how this explored relationships and expectations. It was about seeing something else in people that you see all the time, allowing new information to reshape formed opinions. It was also about family and relationships, how it complicate things but also how it can make it so much simpler. It was sweet and silly with some good heat at times, making for an excellent read!

5.0 out of 5 stars So cute...
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseTotally loved this book! The story is sweet, and endearing, with some angst situations, just to add some spice, romantic scenes that will warm your heart and a wonderful happy ending. I enjoyed the little twist in the best friend's brother trope. A cute, nice reading just perfect for these difficult times.

5.0 out of 5 stars Never Assume
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI have enjoyed all of this author's books and this was no exception. You know when you say something, do something, promise something with the best intentions and it blows up in your face. Well, this is what happens with Ace. He just wanted to cheer Benji up by being his secret Admirer and maybe get out of the whole good friend role and make Benji see him as more. Instead, he becomes a potential creepy stalker and now ends up in the how do I come clean without really making Benji mad situation. Well, they get there but it is a great read. Recommend.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sweet and uncomplicated
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis is a low angst, sweet story. Benji has had a crush on Ace for a long time but never thought Aces would look twice at him. A) because he's straight and B) he's Benji's brothers best friend.
Loved the turn around of the story where the "straight" one purses the other
