- Reviewed in the United States on September 27, 2020Secret Admirer is a college, bi-sexual awakening, best friend’s brother love story and it hits all the right notes. Benji and Ace are lovely (especially Ace *swoon*) and they have great chemistry and connection that you can feel coming off the page. There are steamy scenes that are just right in their level of detail and the emotional treatment of Benji’s inexperience and Ace’s bisexuality is expertly handled. It’s not too heavy-handed, light on the angst, but altogether authentic.
There’s a purity and “rightness” about Ace and Benji’s relationship that resonates, and the events and the character’s actions and reactions are described with just the right balance of information to picture the scene, understand what is happening and how the characters feel about it, but not so much that you are told what to think and how to feel about it all. You are given the freedom as the reader to interpret and feel, and that’s the hallmark of a great book. If I just wanted everything spelled out, I’d read a dictionary.
The author has created an aura of happiness and warmth with this couple; as you are reading, you’ll find yourself smiling, because they are loveable and feel right together. The discord from the reaction of Jeremy (Benji’s brother) to Benji and Ace’s relationship also was treated in a believable way. It wasn’t too extreme or over the top, but struck a chord of reality - that this is something that could happen in everyday life. The fraternity element added some external sources of conflict, and humor, to the story which I really enjoyed.
I had read this book a while ago and didn’t review at the time, which I should have because I loved it. I reread it now in connection with the audiobook narrated by the fabulous Darcy Stark. Listening to the audio and hearing the spot-on voicing of Benji and Ace made me remember why I loved the book the first time, and marvel at how much better even a great book can get when paired with a talented narrator. I highly highly recommend you both read and listen to this gem of a story.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 19, 2024This story has a trope that I haven’t read often—the secret admirer. Paired with the brother’s bff trope, it’s a fun premise. Especially as it is the brother’s bff who is the secret admirer. Both Benji and Ace are really sweet genuine guys. Benji, the younger brother, has some self-esteem issues and doesn’t think Ace, his brother’s best friend, could ever like him, and not just because Ace is presumed to be straight. Ace has been lightly bi-curious until his best friend’s brother starts at the same university when that bi-curiosity ramps up into a full blown crush.
The story has a lovely warmth and cheerfulness to it. It’s definitely low angst, with these guys being head over heels for each other and just fumbling along trying to get together, stumbling over their insecurities. I like how their relationship develops slowly and that Ace’s concerns about dating Benji aren’t all about his relationship with his bff. Benji is only eighteen in this story, and so he can be a bit immature, but he grow throughout the story, learning to be less self-centered.
My issue with the story is that in some ways I didn’t really get why Ace was so in love with Benji—I would have liked to see more that they had in common or something.
Still, it is a sweet fun read that kept my interest the whole time. Plus, I loved that there is an epilogue that is years in the future.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 19, 2021Secret Admirer by D J Jamison is a falling in love with my brother’s best friend story that has lots of sweet and angsty moments. Benji has just started college for art and design and is socially awkward and an introvert. He has wanted Ace, his brother’s best friend, for a long time but always thought he was straight and unattainable. Ace goes to the same college and is in a frat and also told Benji’s brother that he would look after him. Benji tries dating but when his date doesn’t show up he feels down and pretty worthless. Ace finds him there and tries to cheer him up. That’s where he comes up with the idea of being his secret admirer. Ace starts sending him more gifts and Benji tries to figure out who the secret admirer is. When he thinks he’s figured it out, he’s wrong but goes to see that guy, who is in Ace’s fraternity. Ace finds him drunk and then takes care of him. The story continues as both Ace and Benji discover that they really like each other. Throw in their fear of what will happen when his brother and family find out they are together and that Ace’s family is from the poor side of town and always pressuring him and you want to keep reading to find out what happens next. There are lots of loving times and Benji’s first time is well written. Ms. Jamison also developed the characters well and you feel like you know them and can relate to them and the situations they are in. I enjoy her books and this one did not disappoint. I’m looking forward to reading more from this author.

5.0 out of 5 stars So cute...
Totally loved this book! The story is sweet, and endearing, with some angst situations, just to add some spice, romantic scenes that will warm your heart and a wonderful happy ending. I enjoyed the little twist in the best friend's brother trope. A cute, nice reading just perfect for these difficult times.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved this story!
This was just the best story. I honestly couldn’t have asked for anything better while in my low-angst reads only stage. I lost track of how many times I thought “awww” while reading. This was just so cute but also with a bit of conflict brought in to have a great balance!
Benji was the absolute cutest and I felt so much for him every time he didn’t believe he was good enough. Ace was such an amazing guy and I loved all his secret admirer gifts. They were so cute and perfect for Benji.
There was a bit of conflict and hurt in this story but it does get worked out quickly enough and I loved their HEA. If you enjoy this author I highly recommend this amazing story!

5.0 out of 5 stars Never Assume
I have enjoyed all of this author's books and this was no exception. You know when you say something, do something, promise something with the best intentions and it blows up in your face. Well, this is what happens with Ace. He just wanted to cheer Benji up by being his secret Admirer and maybe get out of the whole good friend role and make Benji see him as more. Instead, he becomes a potential creepy stalker and now ends up in the how do I come clean without really making Benji mad situation. Well, they get there but it is a great read. Recommend.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sweet and uncomplicated
This is a low angst, sweet story. Benji has had a crush on Ace for a long time but never thought Aces would look twice at him. A) because he's straight and B) he's Benji's brothers best friend.
Loved the turn around of the story where the "straight" one purses the other
