4.0 out of 5 stars A quiet novel . . .
. . . quietly satisfying.
In alternating chapters, Secure the Shadow follows the lives of two female photographers a hundred and fifty years apart. The narrative ‘voice’ while it has an authority and confidence, is solemn and restrained and I found it slow to pull me in.
But the story is expertly crafted, delicately plotted and ultimately engrossing. The two women protagonists are strong and very ‘real’. I didn’t find either of them overly likeable I’d have to say but strangely that didn’t seem to matter.
The subject matter is delicately handled and it is with a slow subtlety that the book reveals its not inconsiderable charms. A very rewarding read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating and unusual subject
A gripping tale of two women photographers separated In time by over a century. Loved the history of photography and the well crafted descriptions of rural and urban nineteenth century scenes and characters, contrasted with their contemporary equivalents. The somewhat dark subject matter of photographic subjects was intriguing. I found this book hard to put down. An accomplished writer. Would highly recommend.
