Send Me One Back?: eight eclectic stories of gay erotic romance Kindle Edition

4.0 out of 5 stars 32 ratings

A scorchingly fun and eclectic gay romance collection from new author Lou Skelton

Each of the eight full-length short stories takes you somewhere new, from sweet friends-to-more romance in a winter cabin to a misbehaving Earl’s private party at the court of Queen Anne. Whether the heat is mild or sizzling, humour and heart are at the centre of every story.

  1. The End of the Line — An impeccably-dressed stranger captures Charlie’s attention during his morning commute. A lightly kinky story of longing and leather.
  2. Satori — Only one bed alert! Aidan and Dimitris undertake a snowy adventure in the Scottish Highlands and find more than just shelter in a tiny remote cabin.
  3. Of Camaraderie and Corruption — In which the Earl of Harley’s servant, Spencer, is led horribly astray by his lord’s friends. Can he escape their clutches and redeem himself? Or is there more to Spencer than meets the eye?
  4. Inside Looking Out — A pair of identical high-rise flats, several enormous windows, and some hot, frustrated neighbours. Find some voyeuristic relief during the pandemic summer of 2020.
  5. The Price of Admission — Ash agrees to meet his new love interest Omar at a fetish club but spends the night feeling like a fish out of water. Can he find what he’s seeking? An exhibitionist tale with a supernatural twist.
  6. Meeting Isaac — Daksh is only too willing to help the terminally-anxious Isaac break out of his shell when asked by sex worker Luis. A therapeutic threesome told in three parts.
  7. Devotions — Follow Benjamin as he enters an all-male religious order and enjoy some priest kink with a difference. For those in the Brotherhood, worship takes an unlikely form and Benjamin must learn to play his part correctly.
  8. Send Me One Back — Two childhood friends are reunited on a family vacation. Elis is self-obsessed, vain, and desperate for attention. Stuck in a Spanish villa alongside him, our diary-writing hero is drawn into a surprisingly tender romance.

Heat level: low to very high
Feel: fun, upbeat, occasional angst, lots of feels
Length: 40,000 words over eight stories
HFN endings, some non-traditional

An electrifying variety sampler bundle, packed full of illicit tales of intimacy and desire ~ ARC reader

I was really impressed on how the stories twist... I'm very glad they all have that "unexpected" factor. Loved it, loved it, loved it!

Short stories can be hit or miss, but I was glad that I didn't pass up this collection! I really think it's greater than the sum of its parts: the overall reader experience was incredibly satisfying and I was definitely left wanting more from multiple shorts!

No, seriously, I know what you get when you're reading an erotic anthology. What I found surprising about this was how *good* the stories were. I'd kind of expected this to be PWP--passion without plot--but frankly, these stories, short as they were, had a plot. And they weren't simply tab A into slot B.

I'm extremely happy I stumbled across this delightful book, and if you're looking for sexy stories that aren't simply sex for sex's sake, I highly recommend this.

Each story was like a scene in a longer narrative. They are not technically, in my mind, cliffhangers, but could be considered a piece of a bigger story, all ended with a minimum of an HFN. It was a very interesting compilation. The blurb describes each story so I won’t do that here but the author has warnings which you may want to heed.
If you like short gay stories with different levels of explicitness and extraordinary breadth of plots, try this anthology. I volunteered to review an ARC of the book through Gay Romance Reviews.

This is the first book I’ve read by this author. I expected more from the blurb but that could be just me. I read all eight stories and all are totally different than the other. Each of these stories I consider a very short read. They range from current to historical. The only characters I really got attached to were the ones in the very last story. The End of the Line and Satori did not give me any thing memorable.
Of Camaraderie and Corruption at the end had a surprise that made it enjoyable.
Inside Looking Out I feel is like the old Hitchcock story that has been done too many times.
The Price of Admission had a few twists that kept my attention.
Meeting Isaac had a few things going on. I was surprised that Luis was in a committed relationship. I feel the story didn’t end just left questions where it went from there.
Devotions I feel like I missed something there.
Then there was Send Me One Back. Again, I feel like it just stopped with plenty of questions left open. I enjoyed the characters. I had to laugh at these two guys and the education they had on vacation. They both sounded so young and learning. It was also part of Elis trying to be one up or one better. The book is okay if you are looking for some really short stories to read.

Short stories can be hit or miss, but I was glad that I didn't pass up this collection! I really think it's greater than the sum of its parts: the overall reader experience was incredibly satisfying and I was definitely left wanting more from multiple shorts!

The descriptive title of "eclectic" is very, very accurate. The stories run the gamut in steam, setting, characters and even genre. The writing is unique and engaging, and they each include a lot of character building for how short the stories are on the whole, which is super admirable. It's clear that Lou Skelton understands how to write full characters and scenarios.

Below is a brief description of my thoughts and individuals ratings for each of the eight stories. I haven't included any plot descriptions, as it would make this too long and also the content warnings and chapter descriptions at the beginning of the book really give a great idea of what the stories include.

No. 1: Impersonal but slick and forbidden with a great cyclical conclusion. Could not imagine actually doing anything like this myself, but the story really makes a case for how hot a pair of leather gloves can be. 4/5

No. 2: A bit a disappointment in the context of "erotic." Definitely more of a personal journey-type tale with a sprinkle of romance. Interesting, well-written but a bit of a nothingburger after the first story. 3/5

No. 3: Scorching hot, with some kink. A twist that explains some of the confusion I had about characters' behavior. The twist had me rereading the whole thing over again to see what clues were left that I didn't know I needed to be picking up on. Historical. 5/5

No. 4: Not too into explicitly lockdown/pandemic stuff, but this was good and a fun sort of sexy. Voyeurism done really well, very consensual, with a satisfying HFN conclusion. But it didn't blow me away. 3/5

No. 5: The concept was interesting, with its slight supernatural twist. It was a neat bit of world-building that made me wish I could keep reading. The narrator tapped into a lot of common "not good enough" awkward-in-an-unfamiliar-setting feelings that was really well articulated. 3/5

No. 6: Amazing! Such a respectful portrayal of sex work and anxiety. Also blisteringly hot and incredibly satisfying. I liked all the characters, and the HFN ending felt the happiest. 5/5

No. 7: A tease! Which felt appropriate, given the main theme of self-denial. A great world built here, that I really, really wanted to keep reading. I was bummed that it ended at the beginning of what could be a very satisfying novella or full-length novella. 5/5

No. 8: Surprisingly sweet, with clear characterizations. It's good to know the author plans on expanding the budding romance between the two young men, as the ending leaves a clear opening for a continuation. 4/5

In the back matter, the author talks about her love for happily ever afters, so it was sad that none of these had that. It was mostly happy-for-now endings, with various amounts of happiness promised. Some stories didn't really require a fulling HEA (the first and fifth don't require it at all, and the seventh really feels like the beginning of something so narratively it doesn't make sense.) But some it would have been nice to a conclusive HEA and that made me sad.

Taken all together, this collection is really great and you get a fully rounded experience through these stories. I suppose it's a good thing to want more of quite a few of them, but with only more for the last story promised, I am disappointed. Petition for No. 7 to be a novel starts now.

I enjoyed this set of 8 short stories overall, but I did feel like several were incomplete, and I wanted more details. It certainly did whet my appetite for more (hopefully longer) stories from this author. The stories were short, but steamy, with a few surprises. I liked the variety of different plots, characters, and genres. This is an engaging sample of the author's writing, and I hope he gives us some longer stories soon.

I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Indulgence

I’ve learnt how to stop myself from indulging in cakes and sweets when looking for a treat after a bad day or feeling low. This short story collection is just the thing for a delicious GUILT-FREE pick me up: the stories are SO GOOD!

Skelton writes beautifully, nothing to cringe at here unlike other m/m/romance writers I’ve tried in the past. Intelligent writing for intelligent readers that doesn’t disappoint on that all important smut (the smut is quite excellent).

Great value for eight different stories that offer a wide range of subjects and ideas, is it corny to say ‘something for everyone’? Well, there really is XD

    Very much recommend this collection.

3.0 out of 5 stars Some really good stories, but not what I was expecting
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 29, 2022
I will preface by saying that there are some really good stories in this collection, my personal favourites being The End of the Line and The Price of Admission. However, a lot I just didn't vibe with and not because they weren't good, but because they were not at all what I was expecting.

Never judge a book by its cover is the issue here I guess. From the silly front cover and blurb promising "humour and heart at the centre of every story" accompanied by a list of tropes, I was expecting just that. Some fun, tropey, smutty stories. The smut is there, but some of the stories weren't really fun at all. They were good stories, but some even left me feeling a little maudlin.

I've really enjoyed works by this author before and I think she is an excellent writer, I was just unable to give this more stars because it didn't deliver on expectations, which is more a marketing issue than an issue with the stories themselves but it did hinder my enjoyment.
