Separated (In Midsummer Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 110 ratings

Separated (In Midsummer, #2)

One jealous sheriff. One pushy Hollywood hunk. One threat. One undeniable attraction. One messy situation. One chance to fix it.

I’ve guarded my heart the same way that I’ve guarded my hometown of Midsummer—with unwavering compromise and integrity. I’ve never even once been tempted to let my guard down. That is … until I met Conner Sherwood.
It didn’t matter that I swore off all romantic relationships. Or that I wasn’t interested in opening myself up and likely getting hurt. Like a moth to the flame, I can’t resist him. I can’t stop myself from wanting something I shouldn’t. Even pushing him away didn’t stop me from wanting him. Unfortunately, I’m not the only one who wants Conner. He has caught the eye of a Hollywood heartthrob. How can I compete with that?
But when Conner starts to receive death threats and an attempt is made on his life, I begin to realize that there is more at stake here than having my heart broken. Conner is in danger being in Midsummer, and whoever is threatening him won’t be satisfied until Conner is no longer breathing.
What I know for certain is that I won’t stop until I catch the person responsible for harming the man I’m coming to realize that I cannot live without.

I'm so glad we got the broody Sherriff Rocky's POV. While in Stranded I felt that he did care more for Conner than he let him know, we find out just to what extent his care for Mr. Sherwood is. I love that Conner and River developed a great connection with each other. I cannot wait for the next book!!

I liked Rocky's POV better than Conner's, I must admit. The author managed to redeem him in my eyes after I read Rocky's inner thoughts and fears, what he held most dear and what life changes brought him to this point in life. That does not mean there ever was an excuse to treat Conner without respect. I liked that Rocky acknowledged his mistakes, owned up to them and simply apologized.

The book dealt with all the ways Conner fit into Rocky and his daughter River's life as well as Rocky's feelings on every day matters ranging from his work, being a single father and falling in love. I liked the domestic moments they had, friends that helped him and of course Rocky and Conner getting very close and personal.

The pace was steady, the suspense was mild with a bit of investigating. I wished that Rocky figured out the culprit on his own, but Conner made it there first. That was an interesting side plot. Overall, the story was good and I enjoyed reading it. The little twist in the end was rather well placed and finished the story on a high note.

Excited for books 3 and 4. I enjoyed being able to hear inside Rocky’s thoughts for once - he’s a very caring person despite the gruff exterior.

The story or Rocky and Connor continues on but this time we’re inside Rocky’s head for a different perspective. Rocky has been very steadfast and singular when it comes to his life. Everything is about his daughter’s happiness and protection. He won’t allow anyone into their little bubble of two until ….

On the exterior (which is all we have seen of Rocky thus far because book 1 was in Connor’s POV), Rocky comes across as gruff and surly, but get inside his head and you realize he’s a protector and a guardian at heart. He will do whatever it takes to protect those he cares for and cares deeply for the people of Midsummer and slowly but surely, Connor!

Separated was as intriguing and suspenseful, if not more so than Stranded!! I didn’t think I could be more invested in these guys but here I am, all in!! I super excited to get my hands on Stay! These stories have turned out to be very captivating and entertaining and I hope we see a lot more of this town in the future!

Rocky decided he couldn’t trust his heart to Connor so he broke their (whatever it was) up. Just because he trying to be an adult and a good dad doesn’t mean he’s smart. Connor is just as confused as Rocky and at a loss as to what to do.

When Connor starts getting death threats and the beloved Lemon gets vandalized, Rocky knows he has to step up and protect his man.

I loved the Conner, Rocky, and River relationship. The people of Midsummer are interesting and funny. Quite a shocker in this book too. Really didn’t see it coming.

A good continuation of the series and since are are a couple of more books set in Midsummer, they will be around for a while.

    RATING 4.5 STARS

Separated is book two in the In Midsummer series by Jessica Frances. I have been so excited to jump into this book. I fell in love with Rocky and Conner in book one, Stranded. Book one was in Conner’s POV. Now, it’s Rocky’s turn.

Rocky Green is thirty five years old and is the sheriff of Midsummer. Rocky’s main purpose in life is to keep his ten year old daughter, River, happy and safe. River’s mother left them when she was only four years old, never looking back. Rocky has vowed never to let another person break his daughter’s heart like that again. But then Conner came into their lives.

Conner Sherwood was just supposed to be passing through Midsummer when he got stranded there due to car problems. But then he met the most gorgeous man he’s ever seen, the town sheriff. Only things got off to a rough start. Rocky refuses to let anyone in to his and his daughter’s lives. He only has casual flings. The chemistry between Conner and Rocky is crazy. But Rocky won’t risk it. But then Conner started getting death threats.

“Why is Conner so different? Why has he gotten under my skin in such a way?”

Oh my poor Rocky. This man carry’s the weight of the world on his shoulders. He’s a single father, he protects his town, and now has to deal with his growing feelings for Conner. Can he take such a huge leap of faith and let Conner into their lives, knowing that he might leave? When Conner’s life is in danger, Rocky is forced to face his fears. He tried to stay away, but he can’t.

We knew from book one that Rocky was the grumpy, growly, serious one. I loved getting into his head. But, I was surprised at what I found. He’s not really grumpy. He just cares so much! He wants his daughter to be happy and struggles constantly with knowing the right thing to do. His duties as Sheriff never stop, he gets called out in the middle of the night and has to find someone to watch River. He cares so much for Conner but fought against it for so long. Once he gives in, though, he’s all in. He’s tormented, though, that he can’t figure out who is threatening this man he is growing so attached to.

I’m in love with this little town and the people in it. At the end of Separated, there is a lead in to the next book, Stay. Let me tell you, I think I am MOST excited about this one. If you haven’t read Stranded yet, grab it now. Then you’ll be all ready for Separated. I am obsessed with these two and simply can’t wait to see what comes next!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great second book
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 6, 2020
This is like watching a much loved TV series and what an ending, I want the next episode now. Murder and crime in a small town and all the eccentric characters that live there. River is delightful and her mischief making conspiracies with Connar are funny but Rocky does not think so. A dad raising his daughter alone and now trying to introduce a third person to that tight family unit. There still seems to be one person who is unhappy with the blossoming romance. This book is from Rocky's POV.

    5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Follow-up! Update July 15 2020
Reviewed in Canada on July 11, 2020
From my point of you, I found this second book to be as intriguing as the first. Told from the POV of the sheriff, I got to read the internal narration of him trying hard to be everything to everyone. The mystery ramps up, but I believe there is more going on than what has been suggested in these 2 books so far.

I truly wish there was more I can write about, but the secret fun of a book is allowing others to find a flawless small-town Arkansas contemporary gothic tale, filled with longing, romance, humour, and tragedy.

UPDATE JULY 15 2020: I am still thinking of the character Sophie, and how small-town society projected on to her about being a wife, a mother, etc. She followed up on what was expected of her by the small town she lived in, and to a degree, the sheriff too, re: his role in the community as a protector, and as a father, as a husband, and so on. Is it any wonder when i feel she is trapped in her story! So sad. I truly hope the best for her character who made incredibly difficult choices, and a few mistakes.

4.0 out of 5 stars New narrator!

Hmm XD jk I liked this book but I had a similar problem as I've had with the first book- da beginning. But I've figured out why it takes me a moment to get used to the story. It's the present tense narration. Gotta be honest, was never a fan and never will be lol not that it spoiled this series for me but definitely made me feel a bit off every time I started the book.
This book is Rocky's POV and while I don't like when first person narration changes the fact that the switch happened in a separate book worked out for me.
A part of me wishes it never switched I kind of preferred the sheriff to remain a bit mysterious lol
But another part of me like that and feels closer to the character now.
Also, I'm usually not a fan of kid fics so to speak but I think River's character is very well done and she doesn't feel to childish or too adult like if you know what I mean.
Also was sort of imagining the low key feud/rivalry between the two rows here to be like Pawnee and Eagletown from Parks and Recreation XD
Going to read the next book!
