This collection has the first five stories in the “Serial Investigation” series, and as it’s a series that lends itself well to bingeable reading, the collection aspect was much appreciated— it’s nice to be able to move easily from the first book to the next, and so on. While each story has a different mystery to be solved, the through line (and heart) of the series is the dynamic between Ram and Will. As individual characters and as a duo these two are…complicated, in ways both intriguing and frustrating. The slow burn is slow, but definitely there, and combined with the “work” part of the work/life balance, it’s easy to be drawn into their world, which involves dealing with mysteries with varying degrees of competence and dealing with baggage (or, not dealing with it), see also varying degrees of competence. There’s something deeply messy about them, both personally and professionally, and as I continued to read their stories, that messiness appealed to me more and more. They’re frustrating, endearing, interesting, lively personalities, and 5 books in, I’m definitely along for the ride and looking forward to more of their stories.
