Seven Words You Never Want to Hear: How to Be Sure You Won't Paperback – October 29, 2020
Purchase options and add-ons
Award-winning author Denise Wilson, asks the question:
When life is over and you stand before God, what will he say to you?
There is no greater tragedy than for someone to go through their entire life thinking they are a Christian only to hear these seven fateful words at death: "I never knew you; depart from me" (Matt. 7:23).
A.W. Tozer said, "It is my opinion that tens of thousands, if not millions, have been brought into some kind of religious experience by accepting Christ and they have not been saved." How can you be sure that your profession of faith is more than just words? Seven Words You Never Want to Hear explores the mystery of salvation through the Scriptures and personal stories.
Take the challenge that the apostle Paul gave to the church at Corinth—examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith. The gospel changes everything—beliefs, lifestyles, and priorities. Has it changed you?
Don't wait until death to find out if you got it right.

Review
Denise Wilson states in the beginning of her book that she writes with love and a sense of urgency, and indeed she does. The breadth of her many quotations from relevant Scripture passages and persuasive quotes from pominent biblical scholars is very convincing. This book is a much needed corrective to faulty thinking of many professing believers.--Gordon Rumford, L.Th.;H.B.A., M.A.
With heaven-bent heart, Denise Wilson accurately and urgently unpacks these weightiest "seven words," balancing grace and truth in a way imitative of the very One who spoke them. Please! Put a Bible and this book in the hands of every precious loved one in your life...before it's too late.--Cory McKenna, founding president of The Cross Current

- Reviewed in the United States on November 7, 2023Not everyone who claims to be a Christian is truly in Christ. Not everyone who calls themselves a follower of the Messiah can legitimately bear that title. Yeshua (Jesus) once said there would be many who would come to Him, calling Him "Lord" and claiming to have cast out demons, prophesied, and accomplished other great works in His name, but He would tell them, "Depart from me; I never knew you." And as if underscoring those seven terrible words, the Christian pollster George Barna has found that over a third of Americans profess Christ yet do not believe that Jesus is the only way to salvation, a core Christian belief. That would mean that over a third of our fellow citizens believe that they are saved by Christ but are actually on the way to hell. How can this be? In Seven Words You Never Want to Hear: How to Be Sure You Won't, Denise Wilson asserts that belief in Christ is insufficient to save us from the fires of hell unless it is coupled with repentance. Wilson says that repentance is a change of mind and heart that leads to a change in behavior. She cautions that true biblical repentance will lead to a changed life, for without repentance, there is no salvation. She warns that churches are often responsible for the lack of repentance in our culture because they preach cheap grace; that is, they preach God's forgiveness without requiring genuine repentance. They somehow twist grace to mean that as long as they believe in Jesus, they can live how they want to and yet be saved. Armed with years of experience on the mission field and quotes from a great many notable servants of God, Wilson not only convincingly backs up her assertion that a sizeable portion of Americans who profess Christ are in danger of hearing "depart from me; I never knew you," but also points out areas of everyday life in which there may be behaviors that one should repent of. This is hands down the best book that I have read this year. And given the prevalence of hyper-grace taught in our culture, I believe this is the most important Christian book in a generation. This is a must-read for anyone who claims to be a believer in Christ, the Son of God. This book is excellently written and excellently argued.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 25, 2023The Seven Words You Never Want to Hear that Denise Wilson writes about are from Jesus: “I never knew you; depart from me” (Matthew 7:23). Those are frightening words indeed. I struggled with them when I was unsure of my salvation. Thankfully, as Denise’s subtitle indicates, she doesn’t stop there: she tell How to Be Sure You Won’t hear those words.
Those words of Jesus occurred in what we call the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5-7. The full paragraph is as follows:
"Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness’" (7:21-23).
It’s possible to “do many mighty works in your name” and yet still miss salvation, miss knowing Jesus personally.
Denise discusses several ways that could happen. One is praying “the sinner’s prayer” without faith or repentance. Another is growing up in a Christian atmosphere without ever believing on Christ personally. Or one could be deceived by the prosperity gospel or a works-based religion. Perhaps we haven’t counted the cost of discipleship and only wanted passage to heaven rather than a life of denying ourselves, taking up our cross, and following Him.
People might need to examine their hearts if they say they have been saved yet their life has not changed. We won’t be perfect after salvation. We’re forgiven and cleansed, but we still have an old nature and still need to grow. We’ll still battle with sin—yet if we’re not battling it, but letting it have full sway on our lives, something is amiss.
Denise points out that Jesus did not use a cookie-cutter approach in dealing with people. Years ago I attended classes where we were trained in how to lead someone to the Lord using the “Romans Road,” a series of verses in Romans that explain salvation. That approach is fine as far as it goes. But leading someone to the Lord is not just a matter of getting them to allow you to read them a handful of verses and then you getting them to pray. We need to be open to the Lord’s leading as we speak to people. Only He knows what obstacles to salvation are in their hearts.
Denise includes several testimonies from the Bible, from history, and from modern times. Some of them, she points out, don’t look like what we think salvation looks like. Take the thief on the cross next to Jesus. He knew he was guilty and Jesus was innocent. He asked, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom” (Luke 23:39-42). Was anyone else ever saved using those words? I don’t know. But one thing I learned in my own struggle was that becoming a Christian was not a matter of saying the “right” words, like a magic formula or an initiation rite. It’s a matter of repentance and faith in Jesus.
2 Corinthians 13:5 tells us to, “Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith.” Denise provides helps to do that in this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 2, 2021Canadian author Denise Wilson is a bible teacher, evangelist, homeschool mom, and states that her reason for writing this book was born out of a ‘deep desire to see people come to know and experience Christ as both Savior and Lord.’
Denise’s conversational manner of writing allows the reader a one-on-one experience of learning about the author’s life and the importance of Christianity at the core of her being. Unlike some books on the subject of spiritual values, this explanation of how to examine ourselves to see whether we are in the faith is completely accessible to all readers. ‘The gospel changes everything—beliefs, lifestyles, and priorities. Has it changed you? Don't wait until death to find out if you got it right.’
The seven words referenced in the book’s title - “I never knew you; depart from me” - represent the words denying entry into heaven. The easy to read and absorb ideas and guidance Denise offers share ways to examine our lives, beliefs, our loves, obedience, repentance, and more. As Denise states, ‘This book is based on the truth of God’s Word. Jesus said, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” This is not about judgment and condemnation but rather freedom and hope…Belief is not what ultimately matters – truth is…The bottom line is that we discover truth; we don’t create it.’
Clarity and compassion and strong convictions make this book about Christian belief a valuable resource for introspection and change. Grady Harp, April 21

5.0 out of 5 stars Should be required reading in every Bible College and Theological Seminary.
In these tumultuous days when the sins of the Church, past and present have been revealed, Denise Wilson, in her well written book "Seven Words", shares what it truly means to be a Christian, and what it does not; and she does it biblically, by quoting one text after another, and illustrating each with living testimonies. She makes it plain, that becoming a. Christian, is not merely a matter of repeating the sinner's prayer, but a life long commitment to be a follower of Jesus, in word, deed and holy living.
It is my belief, that the "Seven Words" should be required reading in every Bible College and Theological Seminary, regardless where it sits on the theological spectrum, whether to the right or left or anywhere between; and if I were still in active ministry, I would put it in the hands of every believer at his or her baptism or profession of faith.
As a Christian community, we are indebted to Denise, for reminding us again of the importance of our original commitment as disciples of Jesus, and to follow it through in every aspect of our lives, and we look forward to any thing more that she may say to us in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well-written, thoughtful, and thought-provoking
So, it may seem to be a little odd for me to give five stars to an author who is certain I am going to Hell, but I rate books on merit, and Wilson wrote a great book here.
To be clear, I am not religious, and simply try to be a good person according to my principles. I have put considerable thought and effort into such. Anyway, we’re reviewing the book, not me; it just seemed relevant contextual information to mention that I’m not Christian and yet do have an actively applied interest in such topics.
A long-discussed topic in Christianity is that of salvation through faith vs salvation through works. Wilson makes the case for salvation through faith backed up by morally consistent works.
There are many little illustrative anecdotes, comparing and contrasting different ways of going about living up to one’s professed beliefs, and also asking, at the end of various sections, incisive open questions of the reader, that are not nearly so loaded (and closed) as many may be used to, prompting the reader to really answer them, not just reach for the answer the asker wants to hear.
Effectively, parroted affirmations will get your local religious authority figure off your back, but genuine introspection followed up with action however difficult will get you into the Higher Authority’s good books and keep you there.
It does nicely side-step the usual problem of how to sort out the oft-conflicting handed-down data of what is good and what is sinful, by putting the question back to you. Is it really not sinning, or are you just justifying your sin to yourself because you want to do it more than you want salvation?
There is, of cause, the flaw that this can be used to reinforce existing beliefs. If for instance you believe that God isn’t truly concerned about you wearing clothes of more than one cloth or eating pigs, but is concerned about who has what sex with whom, then you will probably continue to believe that. I’ll not knock a star off for this though, as that’s a flaw in the source material, not this book. Or, as some might argue, “it’s not a bug; it’s a feature”, but that too is outside the scope of this review.
All in all, this is a well-written, thoughtful, and thought-provoking work that I would recommend as interesting reading to those of any (or no) faith.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read
A message that is 100% needed in the world today. Too many people are claiming to know Christ for personal, selfish reasons and are living a life contrary to scripture. This then leads to confusion to non-believers as to what Christianity is and the Saviour we serve. Sinners prayers and altar calls were not part of my upbringing, nor are they part of my church today - and this is something I am very thankful for after reading this book! Denise has done some incredible research for this book and you can tell her passion for Christ in every word. This book was very easy to award 5 stars to! I would have no hesitations to recommend this to anyone (and already have!). It would be especially convicting and helpful for those with doubts of their salvation. This book hurt me in places - but in the best way possible - only to help me grow!

5.0 out of 5 stars Demands a decision
Review of “Seven Words You Never Want to Hear” by Denise Wilson
Review by George S.
This book cuts right to the heart of our soul security, questioning the presumption that we are good enough for heaven. It lays out in clear and simple terms the basis of salvation through Jesus Christ. But then it doubles down, challenging glib professions of faith that don’t follow through to changed behavior. So it is as much about discipleship as it is about conversion and evangelism.
I was fully engaged from the title on and immediately was drawn into self-examination. I felt a personal call for true repentance and for a sincere, surrendered walk with God. All my excuses were exposed. The author’s writing style flows easily, but the impact is sharp. She can be both stern and hard-hitting in sounding the note of divine judgement and yet gracious and compassionate in declaring God’s love in Christ for sinners. Her choice of real-life stories shows the wisdom and sensitivity of one who has lived deeply and grown her own faith through much devotion. The “Ask Yourself” section at the end of each chapter brings a practical focus that is helpful for personal application or group discussion. This is a book that searches you and finds you, whether you are ready or not. It demands a decision.

5.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing truth
The truth of the gospel. Finally someone unafraid to speak the whole gospel about heaven and hell. Thank you for your honesty
