The Old Bags' Sex Club: A spicy midlife rom-com about love and the importance of friendship Kindle Edition

3.9 out of 5 stars 18 ratings

Four Old Bags and four Old Bag Problems! How can four women spice up their love life without losing their minds?

Annabel lost her husband two years ago and is looking for another man. Jackie is recovering from her husband Alan’s infidelity and wants to have sex with someone else. Karen is a career woman and doesn’t want a relationship, or does she?

Finally there’s me, Terri: I’m between men right now but I’m going to spice up my life, and that of my three good friends or beat myself to a pulp with the nearest whip if I fail.

My idea is this: we all have to have an affair in the next month or forfeit our right to be part of The Old Bags’ Sex Club. Let the fun begin!

Perfect for lovers of spicy romance that makes you think!

Reviews:

“Funny and thought-provoking! I certainly invested time in the characters and the ending was perfect. It was relatable too as a middle-aged woman! It was the first book I have read from this author but certainly not the last.”

Anne Brooke is a brilliantly luminous writer in a variety of genres and people should be reading her stuff. Something that is unique to Brooke's writing is her ability to interest me in things I would have thought I would dislike. This has happened on more than one occasion and has me seeking out everything she has published. Which is the only reason I would purchase a book with this title and read my way through it. It also has to count for the Diverse Reading Challenge (google it) because this novel certainly stretched my comfort zone.

This novel is about four women who have been friends for a very long time, know each other well, and are comfortable together. Their age varies some and each are very different but well-developed characters. They meet monthly as a group for drinks and dinner and somehow the topic of sex came up I know, what a surprise, given the title.

Annabelle has been a widow for two years and is in her fifties. Jackie recently discovered her husband had a three-year affair with another woman, has forgiven him and is trying to put their marriage back together. Karen has been concentrating on her career and men really have been in the picture. Terri is the most active sexually as she belongs to a sex club.

I can just hear my friends shrieking "Gloriamarie, why did you read this?" And all I can say is please re-read the first paragraph. Brooke's writing is superb and she draws me into reading what I otherwise wouldn't because is just that good at it. Her characters are vividly drawn, her plots well-developed, there are all these details that make the whole thing come alive and is real for me.

I am not going to spoil the story for you with a lot of details. Yeah, some bits were uncomfortable for me to read, but the caring and mutual respect of the participants for each other mitigated much of my discomfort.

I just wish Brooke would include a clickable table of contents.

Anne Brooke is one of my all-time favorite writers. Prolific and incredibly gifted, she writes in a variety of genres and she’s a master in each one. With seeming ease, she grabs the reader with a book’s first line, transporting you into the story and giving you no choice but to love every page. She’s that good, her stories deliciously addictive. The Old Bags’ Sex Club is high on my list of Anne Brooke faves. The story has heart, humor, and warmth, but also rocky bits, times when life kicks the characters in the shins. The four girlfriends are so well crafted, so real and engaging, you’d swear you know them. Their adventures, both the ups and the downs draw you in, keep you turning the page.

As the title implies, yes, there’s sex. And it’s hot sex. Sizzling and intense. So much so that you’ll scorch your fingers. But the story is so much more. It’s about trust and love and the deep bond between female friends. I loved these characters. I wished I belonged to their circle. Every woman needs such friends. As these ladies hash and then embark on a grand adventure-to-passion, tears are shed, laughter enjoyed, and a shoulder is always at the ready. And no matter what happens, they are there for each other.

The blurb and other reviewers detail the plot, so I’m just sharing why I enjoyed the story so much. I did so because Anne Brooke’s magic pen makes a tale real. The story has depth, the characters come to life, making you care about them, and the setting is vivid and authentic. I wasn’t just reading Brooke’s book, I lived the story along with the four friends. I could literally see and hear them, always the mark of excellent writing for me. Another treat was walking London streets, visiting cozy pubs, an oh-so-tempting Indian restaurant, and other places I usually only get to enjoy at the price of a hefty airline ticket. For readers like me, who love England, this book is the next best thing to being there for a fun time with your besties.

Bottom line: The Old Bags’ Sex Club is an immensely satisfying read. No pun intended, though as stated above, the pages do sizzle. Smiles are guaranteed, heart squeezes, too. And when you read the last line, visit Anne Brooke’s Amazon author page. Anything she writes is a winner. Highly recommended.

What grabbed my attention first was the title. It was unique and interesting. I was hooked right away reading it and dying to know how all four would accomplish their goal in a month in having some sex. My favorite to read about and see how they would grow were Annabel and Jackie.

I liked Terri, but I normally don't read F/F, so it was difficult for me to read those parts. And Karen was equally enjoyable, and towards the middle of the book I was quite surprised. (Not going to spoil what the surprise was:) ) I still enjoyed this book thoroughly. It was full of humor, sadness, and a deep friendship that I love to see.
