I am a huge fan of Rebecca L. Garcia. Some of my favorite books have been written by her. So, I was very happy when I was asked to read and review the first book in her new series, Marked By Blood. And, I can now add Shadow Kissed to that list of favorites. We know that I love witchy and vampire books. This one has some of both. Dark fantasy has quickly become on of my favorite genres. This story has that perfect atmosphere. It is so good! The guild has supposedly been protecting Olivia from the big bad vampires, which her mom and best friend are a part of. Not long after her boyfriend dies, all hell breaks loose and she is kidnapped by a vampire. The whole thing is baffling because the guild was thought to be impenetrable. Turns out that isn’t the only surprise awaiting Olivia in the days to come. I like how Olivia grows and gets stronger through the story. When we first meet her she is grieving the loss of her boyfriend and then almost immediately gets kidnapped. The action and tension continues until the end of the book. I know don’t how she doesn’t totally lose her mind when things start happening around her that she can’t control, but she doesn’t. She has anxiety and seems to “zone out” from time to time. For the most part, she holds it together and does what needs to be done. Sebastian swears that he’s protecting Olivia from others who either want her dead or want to use her for their own agendas. He is that protective alpha-type guy, who just happens to be a vampire. He tells Olivia more than once that she shouldn’t trust any vampire. That they will always choose themselves over anyone or anything else, especially a human. But we see cracks in his armor here and there. I love his journey as well. He quickly became my favorite character in this story. There is something about Sebastian that makes you want to protect him right back. Did I mention his wings? Yeah, definitely a new attribute I’m loving. This book has family drama, political intrigue, vampires, magic, dark castles, steamy scenes, kingdom struggles, twists and turns, and a cast of characters that make the story leap right off the page. The ending, while I guessed parts of what was coming, left me wanting the next book immediately. I would love to see this series brought to life on the screen, big or small. I absolutely loved this book and highly recommend it to fans of dark fantasy, vampires, and fantasy romance.

So I've just finished this whole series but never got around to writing this review because I was to eager to read the next one. Overall a good series. Has some very dark contents, slavery, sex, death, torture along with all the other happy good stuff. Olivia is a young sheltered and naive sorceress who gets kidnapped and finds out her true heritage. From there everything goes down hill but instead of letting those things break her she uses it to grow stronger. A lot goes on in this series. You think you know the storyline and then you find out there was something else going on behind the scenes which is the actual storyline. I definitely recommend.

I rarely go for the dark gothic fantasy books but when it's one of your favorite and autobuy authors and it contains vampires, how could I say no tonthat?! I definitely wasn't disappointed by this story that instantly grabbed me in front page one and had my scrambling to read faster just to get a glimpse of the twist and turns, betrayals and secrets, and to know what will happen to our heroine, her family friends and frienemies. A barely adult sorceress living cooped up from her mom's fear of losing her to Vampires, who haven't been seen in there city..until now,all while grieving the unexpected and mysterious suicide of her long time boyfriend which noone wants to talk about, as soon as her mom divulges there’s been a few vampire attacks but she's perfectly safe even though she's got double bodyguards now..until a few hours later when she is safe..no one's really safe, all hell breaks loose and ahe finds herself kidnapped by a vampire that insistes he just wants to protect her and this is where secrets, betrayals and twists take the story on a rollercoaster ride of events and emotions that keep you engaged until the last page! There's so much depth to this story, the world building, the plot and characters make for an epic story. I can't wait to see where Rebecca takes this story next!

At first, I was going to give this 4+ stars thinking it was the authors first entry into authorship but this is not her first book and therefore the amount of grace lended is less. The story is pretty good, mythos established although more actual involvement in the world is needed. For example, it seems to be a modern world like ours, phones, cars, beepers( who uses a beeper?), but when characters interact with the world none of these things are used. The author tells us these things are there but doesn’t show the characters using them. There is stilted dialogue and times when editing mistakes hinder comprehension ( as well as word document like formatting). I’d say this book is most suitable for ages 15-18, there are lots of trigger warnings but I read nothing “triggering”, it’s very tame in comparison to some books in the genre. There is no sex and just a few F words thrown about. If the author used real editors instead of beta readers and a lone personal proof reader, this could be molded into a pretty good book and not read like a self published story.

Shadow Kissed Blew me away! Thank you so much to Rebecca L. Garcia for allowing me to read an ARC. I honestly went into this book with little information. I wanted to be surprised and my goodness did this book have me squealing.

This book has strong characters, amazing dialogue, vampires, magic, political tension, and of course enemies to lovers. I found myself laughing at some of the best one liners! I got a lot of ACOTAR vibes in the beginning but as the plot developed it definitely stands on it own. I cannot wait for the sequel!

It’s not that it’s necessarily bad, but there’s not a whole lot of action in this book. I feel like 3/4 of it is the MC going back and fourth on issues that could Have been incredibly easily resolved.

As others have said descriptions are pretty simplistic too, and the MC is very childish.

Book reads more like a young adult book apart from a bit at the end, there’s just not any fire to any of it, both action or sexual.
