A Ring Realms Novel: Savant's Blood Saga Book 1: Shadow of the Avatar (Savant's Blood Saga Fantasy/Science Fiction) Kindle Edition

4.8 out of 5 stars 12 ratings

A young girl is stolen from her mother by agents of a jealous goddess, escapes and becomes a street waif known as 'Wren' who, decades later, is an elder member of the Brethren Guild, a thieves guild in the ancient city of Corwin.

A battle with a rival Brethren Guild forces Wren to seek refuge in a temple where she receives the first clues that will lead her toward the truth of who and what she is. From a dream, an amulet in the shape of a phoenix appears around her neck. Engraved on the back of the magic device is one simple word--Liandra.

Wren must not only learn her identity but how she fits into the universe she lives in. As she later discovers, a savant's sense of self is far more than a name or even a body but a spiritual destiny tied to the very origins of the Ring Realms themselves.

Hecate, goddess of the moon and dark magic, wants a new body and eight-summer-old savant Liandra Kergatha has the one she covets. Torn from her mother's arms, the young girl is spirited away to another world to undergo the ritual of succorunding--the creation of an avatar. Before the procedure can be completed, the temple is attacked and Liandra escapes into the city with the bindings half completed and her name and memories of her former life wiped clean.

Possessing great natural skill and many hidden powers, the young girl becomes known as Wren and perseveres on her own. A decade later Wren is one of the greatest master thieves in Corwin. Unfortunately for Wren after her ordeal as a child, lost is not forgotten. Following a bloody encounter with an avatar, Hecate's baneful attention is drawn to her once again. What started with a kidnapping becomes a conflict that escalates into a war involving powerful immortals, wizards, and otherworldly creatures as Wren seeks help and wins favor with the legendary clan of the Felspars.

To survive the ordeal stretched in front of her, Wren must learn her origins, befriend amazing allies, and tap into the secret powers of her birthright. Even as she rises to the challenge, she discovers Hecate isn't the only foe gunning for her...

I loved the book's imagery, and intricacy; Usually a fan of historical novels, I found the similarity of immersion into a true realm of fantasy. A beautiful work with complex character development, and a meaningful journey for the reader.

Firstly, this book is well worth the money for the length alone. It’s the size of two or three YA books, and well paced to boot. On top of that, the main character has a compelling journey and is a delight to read. People use “strong female character” as an insult a lot, but our MC Wren is a much more balanced take on the trope. Powerful and competent enough to solve most of her own problems while remaining real and multi-faceted enough to be vulnerable and ask for help when she’s at a breaking point. The rest of the cast is colorful and intriguing. You never quite know who to trust, which kept me on my toes a bit.

The pacing is pretty good, especially as the story goes on. There’s a lot of action at the start before diving into magic and the political intrigue of one of the most powerful families within the Ring Realms (as far as I can tell). I especially recommend the book for those who wanted more action, less romance, and a fair bit more death in Throne of Glass

A Ring Realms Novel: Savant's Blood Saga Book 1: Shadow of the Avatar.
It’s seldom that a book puts such a strong spell on me: I had to finish it, always hungry to find out what the next intriguing adventure the feisty young protagonist, Wren, had stumbled into. Will Greenway has managed to write a fascinating and exciting story of more than 235,000 words. It’s a lot of words but every single one of them felt necessary and actually made the book easy to read. It’s full of astonishing relationships, sparkling magic, funny situations, blood-curdling experiences and heart-breaking moments.
The book also includes a very detailed glossary which lifts it into the realm of Frank Herbert’s Dune. I highly recommend this book and I’m looking forward to reading the sequel.

This is the first part of an epic series, it is fast paced, exiting and especially fun to read. This first one is a mostly Fantasy story and starts out as most of its genre. It is hard to tell you more without giving away to much, read it, if you are into Fantasy and SF, you will not be disappointed.

The book is a little over the top in some regards, perhaps, but sometimes I think everyone needs a dash of superhero in their fantasy. I can think of nothing better to say than that the book is good fun, and is currently priced excellently as well.

The descriptive language of this book is such a treat it hooks you from the very first line. Language aside, the plot is gripping and character-driven. A saga you can grow with.

What more can I say. I purchased and have read every Ring Realms novel Mr Greenway has published. I've re-read every book at least a half dozen times and check often hoping he has released a new book in his realms.
