About the author

J.H. Moncrieff writes supernatural thrillers for readers who love Gillian Flynn, Darcy Coates, and Stephen King. Her paranormal mystery, City of Ghosts, won the Kindle Book Review Award for best Horror/Suspense. She lives in a quiet Mexican fishing village, where she perfects her Muay Thai roundhouse, paddleboards with wild dolphins, and drinks more iced tea than anyone you know.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 4, 2021Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseSHADOW OF THE SASQUATCH, by J.H. Moncrieff, is a "sequel" to RETURN TO DYATLOV PASS. Although this story can be read on its own, it does mention events from the previous novel that could spoil THAT story for those who haven't read it yet. I do recommend reading RETURN TO DYATLOV PASS, simply because it was a fantastic story, itself.
The Tanner family--Riley, Jason, and their ten-year-old daughter Brooke--have purchased a house in the Oregon Wilderness. It doesn't take long for Riley to realize why such a home was so affordable . . .
Oregon is known for many Sasquatch sightings.
". . . it was watching them. Stalking them . . ."
In her desperation to find someone to believe her, Riley tries to contact Nat McPherson.
Nat's life has gone downhill in a big way since her trek to Russia. With a child involved though, things are more . . . motivating.
"Riley's husband Jason seemed nice enough. He couldn't help being an idiot.
The comedic banter from Nat--even her internal thoughts--are a favorite part of this novel for me. The characters' feelings felt true to the situation, their financial and emotion concerns all too real to dismiss.
While Nat may not be an "expert" on these creatures, she has the first-hand knowledge that others are lacking.
". . . Let's just say they really don't like having their picture taken."
The novel went into a direction I never saw coming, and I enjoyed it all the more for this. It stood out in a way that many other, similar tales, do not.
". . . You might live there, but you'll never own it. It's theirs."
Overall, another treat from author J.H. Moncrieff. The characterization, dark humor, and infusion of real life concerns make this novel so easy to get emotionally invested in. I can't wait to see what she comes out with next.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 21, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseOh wow, this story is even better than the first, which was quite good. I hope this is not the last we will hear from Nat. With her podcast, the subject could go on quite a ways. Editing is once again excellent, which for me adds a smoother read. Also there is the unanswered question of why the dyatlov creatures were so violent, not to mention posed the bodies, while the American version seemed more peaceable, tho not with Nat.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 1, 2023Format: KindleWhat a way to write. She lead you in, one way, in the beginning and ended it with a surprise ending. I thought it was cool.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 15, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseMany books in this genre are poorly written and even more poorly edited, this book is not one of them. This story is very good and the characters are fresh and appealing, so if sasquatch is your thing, you really need to get it.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 11, 2022Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThough I suffered through the poorly written "Return to Dyatlov Pass," I thought I'd give this author one more try. These cryptid horror novelists are hardly master wordsmiths, but sometimes they churn out entertaining, over the top yarns. This is not one of those times. I hadn't realized that this was a sequel to the aforementioned yawner featuring the insipid Nat character who unfortunately survived the previous novel. She gets called in to help a local family with a burgeoning Sasquatch problem and agrees to do so despite battling her own personal demons. Yawn. While the writing is marginally better, the story still drags, with way too much boring dialogue that does nothing to advance the story. This writer has the unenviable "gift" of making 160 pages feel like 300. Then, much like the previous story, everything comes to a head fast, but the ending is contrived and unsatisfying. I've learned my lesson and will avoid Ms. Moncrief in the future.

5.0 out of 5 stars Face to face with her nemesis...
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseNat McPherson's life changed when, determined to solve the mystery of what happened to the Russian students at Dyatlov Pass in the 1950s, she and her team travelled there. The results were devastating and the former podcaster suffers acute depression, alcoholism and has hit rock bottom when, out of the blue, her services are called upon.
A family who have recently moved to an isolated house in the wilds of Oregon are being targeted by an enormous creature that only appears at night and whose description closely matches what Nat saw thousands of miles away in the inhospitable Ural Mountains. Her mental state is rocky and involving herself in this family's problems brings everything flooding back, but she cannot turn her back on them. She has to face her nemesis.
Once again, J.H.Moncrieff delivers - strong on plot , atmosphere and characters. this story shares a main character with the author's earlier Return to Dyatlov Pass and also shares some of its nightmares, but it creates new ones of its own. Shadow of the Sasquatch is scary, creepy and I wanted to know what happened next. It is horror with heart, and, In J.H. Moncrieff's hands, it works well. There's a great twist in the tale too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Caution! You won't be able to put this book down!
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI'm not a fan of writing product reviews simply because I am not very good at it. However, this author always inspires me to go out of my comfort zone as her books are the only ones that I CANNOT put down once I start them! The characters are flawed, in some cases badly broken, not always likeable and at times downright jerks. In other words they are completely believable. The storyline pace moves quickly and kept me flipping pages until the very end. If you are a fan of supernatural suspense books, you will love all of her books, including this one

3.0 out of 5 stars Book review
Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseIt's the first time I've read one of her books. It was interesting, a plot twist towards the end, but was wrapped up in 2 pages at the end. It was fine up until then, but there was no back story or previous mention of the murderer before then.
