Shallow Kindle Edition
Fake.
Shallow.
Brinley Crassus
Sedlacek College Preparatory High School's princess.
She belittled the weak, the easy prey, using her victims to cover her own wounds.
Loner.
Outsider.
Roderick Roher
Sedlacek College Preparatory High School's freak.
He didn’t need anyone, only the script that bled from his soul.
He was the boy she turned her back on when he needed her the most.
When she needed him the most.
Words tore them apart, and ultimately brought them back together. But once again, callous whispers fell from betrayed lips, threatening to destroy what they’d vowed to protect.
When the echo of their argument leaves their relationship in turmoil, Brinley and Roderick are faced with the ultimate decision – fight desperately together or surrender to lives apart.

Review
"From the moment I started this book it took up 90% of the thoughts that crossed through my mind. It even invaded my dreams. I can honestly say I haven't had a book do that before... Top 5 read of 2018! And it is now one of my top 10 favorite reads all together." - Goodreads reviewer
"Emotional. Heart breaking. Real. Captivating. Shallow has everything you'd look for in a great read." - Washington Post best selling author, Ella Maise
"Shallow pieces together grief, loss, and hope, creating a story that is far deeper than its title. Together, Roderick and Brinley challenge the boundaries of high school cliques while working to overcome the scars in his past and the fears about her future. Equal parts introspective and romantic, Shallow takes readers on a journey to discover the truth behind the masks we wear and the power of our words." author, Hazel James
"This is NOT your typical high school romance by any stretch of the imagination. The main characters are deep, emotional, thought and feeling inducing, and truly heart touching. This is a very, very deep book that is not for the weak at heart. So many real life issues worked through and dealt with by the main characters that your heart truly bleeds for them all." - Goodreads reviewer
"Shallow is a journey of turmoil, hope, loss and love. Overcoming fears from the past, and fighting for a future in a beautifully written story that bled off its pages and came to life." - NYTimes best sellingauthor, LA Casey

- Reviewed in the United States on April 4, 2021Format: KindleVerified PurchaseYessi Smith once again gripped my heat and tugged until my emotions were done. What a relevant tale to tell in a world full of demon spawn.
Roderick and Brinley have known eachother their whole lives but somewhere along the way they lost eachother. While they saw eachother nearly everyday the distance and social standing was too immense, until one day changed everything. Words on a wall spoke to their souls and love bloomed in utter chaos.
Yessi is hands down one of my favorite authors. She writes unlike anyone I've ever read. Her ability to not only pull you into a story but have you join the group and be one with the book is extraordinary. This is a must read story and I will definitely read it again.

In Shallow, a mandatory school assignment forces the students to step out of their comfort zone, to work with classmates they'd never speak to otherwise. For a lot of students this is just another assignment, but for a handful of them, it's something that's going to change their lives forever.
Roderick is a loner. Brinley is the shallow, mean girl. Together they break the mold that they've created for themselves. They step outside long enough to realize that they're not so different than anyone else in high school.
While reading YA, I tend to remind myself often that although teens may not speak the way it's portrayed in books, they certainly feel that way. Lost, confused and unsure of just about everything, including themselves. The vulnerability most teens felt in high school is no longer a memory while reading Shallow. It's front and center. Right there in front of you proving that all those times you felt alone, another teen was going through something similar.
Shallow is proof that whether you were the mean girl, the jock, the loner or just a regular kid doing whatever was necessary to survive high school, you weren't alone. I think Shallow is a book that every mother and teen should read.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 13, 2018Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWOW This is Yessi Smith’s first YA novel and i think she has found her home! I read this book in one sitting!
“Alone isn’t such a tragedy when you’re trapped in a past that holds no future.”
Words can destroy just as much as they can heal.
Brinley, the school princess, does whatever she needs to do to fit in at high school. Roderick, the school loner, does whatever he needs to do to survive and graduate. Their worlds could not be farther apart until circumstances change everything and their lives collide.
Brinley needs to decide if she is strong enough to be her true self, or if she will continue to hide behind being shallow.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 13, 2018Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWhat a great coming of age story about second chances and shredding masks. While reading this I found the characters and their life dilemmas so easy to relate to (back when I was their age and the life lessons this book gave amounted to amazing sound advice for everyone. I loved how everything was woven together and the dynamics of the friendships despite all the trials was something that I think everyone hopes and wishes for.
Truly a great read and one I know will find my self going back to. A thousand thank yous will never be enough for bringing this amazing story to life.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 21, 2018Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseFrom the first page Shallow had my attention. I loved watching Brinley come into her own and Roderick finds where he belongs but it was Danny, Brinley's best friend who stole the show for me. This was written in truley Yessi Smith style.... where you become each character as you read... excellent!!!!!!!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 14, 2018Format: KindleI grew up reading Danielle Steele and VC Andrews; those coming of age stories featuring characters rife with turmoil, depth of soul, budding romances, and hidden life lessons. And no matter the story, I always found some truth I could apply to my own life. This story is a fresh take on coming of age.
Brinley - beautiful on the outside but with ugly behavior, fueled by fear of what others will think if they know the truth about her. Is she Shallow?
Roderick- typical loner, bordering on the fringe of his peers, isolated by a difficult past filled with loss, grief, and guilt. Is he ready?
What they have in common is what we all have in common. We are all broken in some way, imperfect, human. We crave connection, love, and compassion...and it’s often something we can’t truly feel for others until we find it within ourselves, for ourselves. And that takes trust, courage, and a willingness to face our fears.
Follow their story and discover what it means to forgive; themselves and each other. Find out what can happen when you take a chance not only on someone else, but on yourself as well.
The Truth Will Set You Free
- Reviewed in the United States on June 13, 2018Format: KindleVerified PurchaseHope, loss and love. These emotions wrapped up a pins and needles, beautifully written story. It's not every day you read a book where you feel the words, rather than just seeing them.

4.0 out of 5 stars An Incredible YA Read!
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI haven’t read many YA novels but I have to say, this one blew me away. It is so well written and the characters draw you in and captivate you from start to finish. This novel addresses the importance of words and how powerful they can be. They can hurt someone deeply or be uplifting, loving and have the power to heal those who have been hurt.
Brinley wants to be loved and accepted at school and will do anything to fit in. Roderick is content to blend into the background. He isn’t concerned with being “Mr. Popular”. He just wants to make it through high school and graduate. Brinley and Roderick could not be more opposite from one another. However circumstances push them together and what unfolds is a story that will stick with you for years to come. It’s about being true to yourself and looking below the shallow surface.
