Shameless Duke (League of Dukes Book 4) Kindle Edition
Hazel Montgomery has spent the last ten years as a Pinkerton detective, fighting to be treated as an equal to her male counterparts, and the list of her successful cases is as long as the Mississippi River. She is not about to allow a supercilious duke to condescend to her. If Arden does not want her assistance, he can take his arrogance and go back to his fancy drawing room where he belongs.
Their clash is as instant as it is inevitable. When a fresh wave of bombings hits London and the danger intensifies, Lucien and Hazel must work together to bring a new ring of Fenians to justice. The more time they spend in each other’s company, the more the underlying attraction between them sizzles, until it bursts into uncontrollable flames.
Haunted by past tragedy, Lucien vowed long ago never to fall in love. Hazel’s sole rule in life is to trust no one. But soon, the cold duke and the bold American find themselves locked in a battle for the greatest prize of all, each other’s hearts.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 22, 2020Lucien West, Duke of Arden, is the head of the Special League of Home Office. The former branch is now public knowledge due to the exposure of Fenians - a radical free Irish group intent upon home rule by violence and death. The Home Office now forces Lucien to join forces with a Pinkerton agent from New York, H E Montgomery, Feeling that this partnership is an attack on his ability and pride, Lucien is determined to rid himself of the American agent. That determination is intensified when he meets the agent - Miss Hazel Elizabeth Montgomery! Not only American and female, but with none of the graces he associates with ladies - and she wears trousers!! Sparks fly during their initial meeting, but Hazel has no problem keeping up with needling Lucien and exposing his pride, arrogance and prejudices. Hazel, an orphan from childhood, has survived on her own and has spent the last 10 years as an accomplished detective, fighting to be treated as an equal in a male world. She views Lucien as an arrogant and condescending snob and cannot wait to prove him wrong. Their clash is immediate and inevitable, until a new wave of bombings hits London and the danger enables them to work together towards their mutual goal of safety and bringing the guilty to justice. But the more time Hazel spends with Lucien, she realizes his intelligence and need to protect those dear to him. Hazel carries her own demons and thought that her heart and desires long dead but slowly coming back to life the more time she is in Lucien's company. Lucien, scared by the suicide of his mother when he was young, does not believe in love. But he cannot deny the attraction to this beautiful American detective - her intelligence, bravery and courage lead him to change his initial opinion. Together they face danger and peril themselves and in safeguarding the safety of the innocent. Adversity brings out our true self and Lucien and Hazel tumble into exposing the Fenian threat to the city and fall into love they never expected. Can they survive the danger that lurks nearby threatening - and also their origins - blue blood peer and American orphan? Exciting and fast paced adventures with danger mixed with unexpected romance and character defining experiences - Wonderful read!!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 23, 2023This novel was captivating and interesting. Hazel was unpredictable, daring and true to form. Lucien surely Learned a thing or two; however could have played a stronger role having learned from experience, it is not always what it seems (The Incident). The story could have had a bit more sleuthing but other than that, it was enjoyable and kept my interest.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 9, 2023H.E. Montgomery, the Pinkerton Agent from New York City in America was due to arrive at the Duke of Arden’s home any minute. Instead he is intruded upon by a female that he finds inconveniently alluring and her last name is also Montgomery. No, it can’t be? The home office wouldn’t saddle him with a partner, especially a female one, would they?
Lucian and Hazel were both briefly at odds with each other until they realized it was possible to work together, because it looked like there was likely to be more bombings in London. Not only do Lucian and Hazel learn to work together, they find themselves having more in common than they imagined and the attraction more than they can resist.
This was a really good story and a lot of fun and romance and five stars to Scarlett Scott.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 15, 2023I love a lady detective, and Hazel is a wonderful version of that trope! I love that Lucien is so awed by her despite himself that he grows into accepting her as his partner. I love a hero that greatly admires the talents of the heroine.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 28, 2023Unwanted partners in the beginning but inseparable in the end!
Hazel fought for everything in her life so it's no surprise how strong willed she is! Lucien on the other hand was born a duke and had been trained as such thus just as willful!
As they work together, they learned & understood each others pain from the past that brought them closer! The physical attraction can't be denied & out of pain...love blossomed!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 17, 2024All six books in this series were difficult to put down. Worth relegating chores until another day. I will read this series again in the future!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 12, 2020It was ok. She was a little annoying and kind of dumb for a character that was supposedly "very bright"
plus the way the book was summed up was way to easy and not believable. Hopefully the next book will be better

5.0 out of 5 stars 🖤 Lucien & Hazel 🖤
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5/6.
🌶️🌶️🌶️/5.
Lucien, Duke of Arden, was not my favorite character in the previous book but this book definitely changed my mind about it. He was still very stubborn and set in his ways but Hazel Montgomery came into his life like a tornado and set him straight.
I loved Hazel. She is a strong heroine with lots of opinions and she wasn't afraid to voiced them or go head to head with Dukes and the like. I loved the fact that she was a detective that was ordered to help Lucien find the culprits that have been causing trouble.
I liked how immediately Lucien was taken by her but at the same time was vexed by this woman. I loved their banter. I liked how they worked together and finally i appreciated that Hazel was the one that find out where everything was happening however i didn't really like the way he put herself in danger however i also know she didn't have any other way to go about it because Lucien was set on protecting her of everything and the stubborn man that he was , he wouldn't let her go and investigate which taking into account his past it was understandable to some degree.
I liked how everything happened and i liked seeing more of Violet & Griffin.

4.0 out of 5 stars Book 4 of League of Dukes is a great read
I read Book 4 of League of Dukes straight after reading book 3 which was possibly a mistake. I didn't like Arden as much as I perhaps otherwise would have. However this is still a good story and the fact that it is based around genuine historical events makes it more believable.
