The Silent Champions follows Captain Aravon and his specially chosen elite warriors (7 in all) as they face enemy hordes in impossible battles. With no magic (beyond a bit of healing magic), all they've got is human ingenuity and tactical genius to carry them through the war alive. It's a story of action and battle and bloodshed, but at its core, it's all about the characters:
  • Captain Aravon, the lone survivor of an ambush that massacred his entire company
  • Colborn, a half-breed who has lived a life of misery and hardship
  • Belthar, a giant with a heart as big as it is soft and easily hurt
  • Skathi, an archer who has had to fight every day of her life in the military
  • Noll, a snarky scout whose prickly demeanor hides his true goodness
  • Zaharis, a mute alchemist and priest on a quest for an impossible treasure
  • Rangvaldr, a healer with the heart of a warrior and a burning desire for a land of peace
Beneath the epic adventure, it's a look at the very real people who put aside their lives and desires to fight to defend the innocent!

Full content visible, double tap to read brief content.

I am, first and foremost, a storyteller and an artist--words are my palette. Fantasy and science fiction are my genres of choice, and I love to explore the darker side of human nature through the filter of heroes, villains, and everything in between. I'm also a freelance writer, a book lover, and a guy who just loves to meet new people and spend hours talking about my fascination for the worlds I encounter in the pages of fantasy and sci-fi novels.

Speculative fiction provides us with an escape, a way to forget about our mundane problems and step into worlds where anything is possible. It transcends age, gender, religion, race, or lifestyle--it is our way of believing what cannot be, delving into the unknowable, and discovering hidden truths about ourselves and our world in a brand new way. Fiction at its very best!

When right off the bat you ascend into this epic battle and you are engaged with an amazing look at the mind of someone you about to spend a few hundred pages with, how can you go wrong? This book is non-stop with action, with amazing analytical thought, and incredibly harrowing disbelief that all this could happen to one guy. Seriously this is so well written in that you feel differently throughout the key moments but you get all that you need from the author to keep your eyes moving and your mind racing. A skill very few possess with the written word and Mr. Peloquin does it to near perfection. He also has an incredible knack for bringing death upon characters. A knack that is inventive, interesting, and cringe-worthy all at once. This book which I describe as Richard III meets Henry V meets Die Hard has all the elements a good military jaunt has but with a very awesome fanatastical twist and seasoning. This was my favorite read of 2019 and I look forward to book 2. I mean what more can happen to Aravon? I am itching to find out.

Aravon a well respected Captain with his own company when they are attacked by some savages the company must not repeat the hellish histroy that is bound to repeat itself . Can they take over come the savages and can Aravon take command of his fighting spirit before the savages take over the kingdom.

I must say the characters in this book are very well written and complex . Aravon is a strong man who has some flaws that make him such a good character. He is strong and commanding in a good way . He is the lone survivor of a massacre that has shaped into the man he is . The people in his company Colburn has lived a life of hardship as a half breed . He is one of a kind. I liked him . Then there is Belthar , he is a gentle giant that is so sweet but also so much in pain . You can feel it when he talks he is very closed off and quiet. You will want to hug him and keep him safe . Skathi is the only woman archer and she is strong and can fight with the best of them . You really don't want to mess with her, she is also hiding some pain from her past . I loved her character and she really does put the boys in their place . Noll is snarky but deep inside he has a heart of gold and there is a goodness deep down that you will love when he brings it out . Zaharis is a secret keeper , mute but a great alchemist and he is also on the hunt for something that might not even exsist . Last but not least is Ranvladr a sweet man and a healer who has the heart of the biggest warrior but honestly just really wants peace . I loved all these characters and the way they interact with each other and will lay their lives on the line for each other when push comes to shove .

Ok i am going to tell you right up front this is a long book but you won't notice cause the author sucks you in by chapter two . The author weaves such a fine story with great characters and such a great story line The battel scenes are well written and the twists and turns will keep you on the edge of your seat. The story weaves itself around you and puts you in the middle of the action. You will be cheering Aravon and the company on through out the story . You will also want to wrap them up in blankets and tell them that everything will be ok . So if you want a complex story with characters that will have you cheering them on this is the book for you . So if you want a great stroy that will have you reading all night long this is the book for you .

Oh my gosh I loved this book!! It was totally action packed and just awesome! This is actually the first book I have read from this author. I've had it on my kindle for quite a while but finally sat down to read it. The book starts out with a bang and never lets you go. I love the way the author wrote this book. Its very detatailed with the description of the characters and I just felt like I was right there with them (although from afar) rooting them on! Captain Aravon has to be my favorite, although by the end of the book I was a fan of most of them. Honestly I love this book so much and I just bought the second one because I need more! I love books where the main characters are passionate about what they are doing and these characters, especially Captain Aravon just knocked it out of the park! Trust me, read this, you won't be disappointed.

Excellent read. Couldn't put it down. It's Navy SEALs or Green Berets, meets Roman Legionaries, in a Game of Thrones type landscape. Excellent story telling, with character building that makes you feel like you are sitting around the campfires getting to know them in person. The ONLY reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is that it's narrated, but still told from only one character's point of view. That's not my favorite type of story telling. BUT, it's an excellent book that I COULD NOT PUT DOWN!

I have read several of this authors other novels and so was looking forward to this new series. I have to say that he did not disappoint. From the opening paragraph to the conclusion it was well paced action and first rate story telling. As this is the first book of the series he took the time to build the world you will be traveling though. He introduced the characters and started to build their stories. He leaves you wanting to know more about them which I am sure will be coming in the future stories in the series. You can tell he researched the military tactics used as well as the weapons. If you like good military action set in a fantasy world then this is a series you will want to sink your teeth into. He introduces a magic system used in some of his other novels as well as some characters. Don't worry though he gives enough detail that you are not missing anything. I cannot recommend this story enough. I am looking forward to the next one in the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Epic Awesomeness!!

Shields in Shadow draws you into the heat of battle with a gripping action and heart-pounding scenes!

Books that are filled with epic battle scenes are among my favorites and Peloquin did one helluva job! The small elite force reminds me of the band in Nicholas Eames' Kings of the Wyld. In this book, each of the characters is believed dead and now work in the shadows. Each of the seven have their own specialty, unique personality, and brand of awesomeness.

Aravon and Skathi were my favorites. Aravon the born leader who must suppress his fear, his doubts, and carry the burden of guilt for the men who died under his command. Skathi, the fiercely independent archer with the fiery temper. And then there's Snarl, the little enfield (flying fox), who was cute as hell. His presence really gave the story that much more depth. It'll be interesting to see what Snarl (who is a messenger) does in future books as it grows fiercer. (I hope to see some really cool aerial attacks!!) I also hope to see more of Skathi's backstory because I'm certain it's an incredible story that could be a book in itself!

Peloquin never fails to disappoint. He truly is a master storyteller, and I'm really looking forward to see what unique twists, stories, and characters he brings to the fantasy genre. Whatever it is, I know it's going to be EPIC!!

I had no much espectation for the book when first i started it, but i was wrong. The story is well written with characters envolving, deep and engaging, even when a characters looks like a small fry it may be better than expected, and main characters can die too, there is no overpower things changing things just because and there is always a hard battle to engage. There were almost none part i actually disliked and none that worth enough to matter much. I'm really waiting for the next book.

An interesting mix of Roman legion type soldiers fighting a losing war against a race of seven foot barbarians. Then add a sort of special forces group using medieval type weapons and employing new tactics to launch covert operations. Lots of fast paced action with likeable characters with a dash of intrigue. It all seems to work well.

Everytime I read a book like this, about a special squad, with members with special but mundane abilities, I always end up comparing it to Gaunt's

While that is a big Comissar Hat to fill, the story was enjoyable and did emote the same sort of feeling that reading those books did.

Really looking forward to the next in the series, and will be picking up more from.the author.
