- Reviewed in the United States on September 18, 2013The Silk Romance by Helena Fairfax proves the old adage that opposites attract. Sophisticated race car driver, Jean-Luc, and the lowly college student, Sophie, could not have been more different except in their attraction for each other.
Sophie promised her dying mother she'd take care of her father and brother, a promise she intends to keep at all costs. For this reason, she convinces herself their romance has no chance.
It takes a while for Sophie to realize she's misjudged Jean-Luc's character, that he's not the playboy he used to be. Working at his silk mill gives her a whole new perspective on what motivates him, and allows Jean-Luc a glimpse into her life.
Helena Fairfax has a wonderful writing style and has written a page-turning romance book. The characters have depth, even her brother, Jack, endearing them to us.
I highly recommend The Silk Romance. Her next book is on my reading list.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 18, 2015Format: KindleVerified PurchaseA smooth, delightful romance, The plot is unique in that the heroine falls for the daring and dangerous race car champ, seduces him at her 'coming out' ball in Paris, then spends the following years hiding and avoiding him. Thinking him to be nothing more than a polished playboy, she considers herself to be the world's biggest fool. Now then, she's offered an internship at one of France's most celebrated silk fabric houses and jumps at the chance since she's in the fashiion design business. When she meets the famous shop's owner and it's none other than the macho man from her past, she discovers he's more than the superficial ladie's man she'd supposed. Their journey is filled with romantic interludes while he unravels the mystery and defeats her previous bad opinion of himself...and ultimately earns her love by using patience and sincerity to teach her life is sometimes deceiving but most often, it's your perception that's at fault. He's a real hero for not giving up on her while she fights thru her doubts and distrust.
While there's nothing I didn't like about this book, I would've liked more of it. I have already recommended this book to my friends.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 2, 2015Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis author has done what most authors nowadays fail to do. She has captured the essence of real old fashioned romance with the real (at least in my head lol) dark haired enigmatic hero who is totally in love with the h. Also she has pulled this off without the offensive profanities and drawn out sex scenes. If you are a fan of romance at all I would highly recommend this book. At first I thought it was historical romance but I soon realized it was not but again this author has captured my interest totally. I would buy her books again.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 11, 2014The writing was good but some of the storyline was weak. Still there was a lovely sweetness in the interaction of the characters. Unfortunately not a lot happens. I don't mean in terms of sex, although there is none but there really isn't much action of any kind. Sophie is poor and has given a deathbed promise to her mother as a teenager to care for her gravely depressed father (despite living in England, a country with a real national healthcare system, he relies on his daughter to provide care for him) and her younger brother who needs music lessons (the kid doesn't need food or clothes, this musical prodigy NEEDS expensive violin lessons).
Jean-Luc is a French former race car driver with lots of money and fame. Apparently he and Sophie had hot one night together on her eighteenth birthday four years ago. Sophie then told him in the morning she was engaged and promptly disappeared to return to feeding and clothing and paying for music lessons for her family. Maybe it was because she had been an innocent virgin, maybe it was her stunning violet eyes or just the fact she walked out on him first (you know how guys are) but Jean-Luc has been obsessed with her ever since. When he discovers she is a college student in London, he arranges a work study placement at the silk mill in Lyon he now conveniently runs in order to get close to her and obviously, find out how she could have walked out on his hotness. Sadly, Sophie is a bit embarrassed when it comes to copping to her working class status and lies to him she is an heiress and unimpressed by wealth which is a total lie or she wouldn't be so freaked about the subject every time it comes up. My mother told me 'It's as easy to fall in love with a rich man as it is a poor one' but apparently Sophie's mom only harped on Sophie paying for her kid brother's violin lessons. Needless to say Jean-Luc has a few control issues of his own courtesy of parental baggage.
Still the best part of this story is that it's really about two people helping each other to take.a chance on themselves by opening up and sharing their feelings with someone else. It also doesn't hurt that they're a really stunning looking couple.
If you're looking for a really gentle sweet bit of fluffiness as a change of pace from the genre's usual heavy breathing, lusty stares and occasional bits of leather thrown in, give The Silk Romance a read. It has its moments!
I received this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 30, 2017Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis story was a about a second chance at love. They had met at her French grandma's home. She was touted as Cinderella looking for a rich husband by her grandmother's friends. So he did not think much about her in a good way. After one night together she left. Now four years later she is back for her he's funeral. And he is no longer the playboy racecar driver. She still has responsibility to her father and brother. But can they over come the past? Will either be able to tell the other what is in their hearts? First time reading a story by this author. Will look for more.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 3, 2015Format: KindleVerified PurchaseA tender romantic tale, The Silk Romance, showcases a strong hero who balances his tendency to control his environment with his basic human needs for love and caring. Helena Fairfax once again gives readers a satisfying romance without relying on sex to sell the story. The history between the hero and heroine provides enough tension to make a satisfying read and the HEA ending with the full cast of characters will leave the reader smiling.

5.0 out of 5 stars A new fast paced Maeve Binchy. Hurrah!
I am not a romantic and I don't normally read romantic novels, but I loved The Silk Romance anyway. I have asked myself why I read it. Well, I have had a few stressful weeks at work and this is a holiday weekend. It is set in Lyon, one of my favourite cities. And it is written by Helena Fairfax - I have met her a couple of times and she is the sort of person whom you leave wanting to see more of. These all proved to be the right reasons to read The Silk Romance. It has driven thoughts of work from my mind, taken me on a whirlwind journey leaving me breathless, lifted my spirits no end and left me wanting more. When is her next book out?
The blurb about the book sets out a plot about a French racing driver, who retired young, and an English student getting it together. But none of this did the book justice. It's just about 2 people I grew to care about - I didn't expect it, but I did. I sort of knew it would work out between them in the end, but I couldn't work out how until near the end of the novel how they could ever manage it as so many obstacles were thrown in their path at such a pace I was audibly gasping by Chapter Ten.
On reflection, I think the first main reason I liked the book so much were that the characters were so well drawn that they became real to me. I could picture them all; not only the protagonists (Sophie and Jean-Luc), but the minor charaters too: Jack the brother, Marco the gay friend, Marthe the housekeeper - I became fond of them all.
The second main reason was that the book was so well written. So often, I find prose stilted and grammatical gymnastics or jarring anachromism prevent me from losing myself in the tale. But not here. The Silk Romance was effortless to read, flowed smoothly and it swept me along with it. I was there with them the whole time. I couldn't put the Kindle down.
I have concluded that Helena Fairfax is a bit like Maeve Binchy, but with pace.
I am now reading Dan Brown's new one: Inferno. But I had to have a breather before starting it just to calm down!
If a non-romantic like me loved this book so much, I can't imagine what Romance readers will think. They'll be blown away, I imagine.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very enjoyable read
This was my first foray into a romantic novel and I think I have become a convert! I liked the speed at which the novel moved and the elegant descriptions of the characters, scenery and events. I really felt I was there too!

5.0 out of 5 stars Smooth as Silk Story
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseSmooth as silk, beautifully written sweet romance. The characters and their surroundings are effectively described, conjuring up those people and places well without the need for endless words of description. I read most of it in just the one day - I'm a fast reader but this story made me want to find out what happened next and it's been a while since a book caught my interest the way this one did. I definitely recommend it.
