Silver Buckles: A Pride & Prejudice Variation Kindle Edition
She staggered a great man. He was reeling. She was overwhelmed.
Fitzwilliam Darcy, standing irritably at the edge of the Meryton assembly, declines to dance with Elizabeth Bennet. In a mood of revulsion, he rejects her without concern of being overheard. Country pretensions are always in need of squashing, and what better way to make clear he would not partner anyone outside his party? However, when he looks over at her, she does not appear humbled at all. She is secretly laughing at him!
Elizabeth is perversely delighted to encounter such an outrageous snob as Mr. Darcy. When he approaches her with a stiff, graceless apology, she coolly brushes him off, believing that, like most annoyances, he will go away when properly snubbed. But no! The man then puts out his hand and, not wishing to create a scene, compels her to stand up with him.
They go through the steps of the dance mutually disdainful and intent upon wounding each other. But by the time the musicians end their tune, Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy have traded barbs with such accuracy, they are unaccountably amused and engaged. Will this most inconvenient flirtation drive them apart—or, like silver buckles, are they a matched pair?

About the author

In addition to mosaic art, which I create at Studio Luminaria, my home-based glass shop in El Paso, Texas, I enjoy writing regency romance and Pride and Prejudice variations.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 6, 2020I have been reading a lot of Pride and Prejudice variations and am starting to qualify my preferences for a good one. This has witty dialog, allowing D and E to develop their feelings. The characters are intelligent, except for Mr. Collins, of course. The story evolved Jane and Mary's characters in a believable way. It' s PG-13, ideal for a younger person interested in a well-written variation. I gave it four stars due to the lack of an antagonist (George Wickham is dealt with quickly). I recommend viewing this enjoyable read as a companion to the original since you find out what happens next to all of the characters.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 3, 2020Other authors will state that Elizabeth Bennet is witty, Grace Gibson proves it. From the beginning of the book at the Meryton assembly, the tone is set for some of the most enjoyable dialogue I've ever read! Darcy and Elizabeth speak as real people speak. There are no trite clichés, no looking through eyelashes, no pouts, none of the overused facial expressions that appear in too many books (no eyebrows raised to the hairline -- how does someone do that anyway?), and the only person who ever giggles is Lydia (one time), There is no unrealistic angst thrown in to try to make the story thrilling or force Darcy into becoming a hero, no kidnappings, no beatings, no jealous harpies trying to force a compromise, no amnesia, and (thankfully) no drawn out misunderstanding due to a lack of communication.
The story takes place in a series of drawing rooms, much like the original Pride and Prejudice. What a concept! It worked for the original and Grace Gibson makes it work in her variation. I absolutely loved this book!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 6, 2020Let me first say that I enjoyed Grace Gibson's writing and would happily read other P&P works from her in the future.
The first chapters of this story had me so excited. Darcy was outspoken, arrogant and fun to read. I like a Darcy that speaks his mind and is a man of action ( I always believed that this is the type of Darcy that can run Pemberley, solve tenant disputes and increase his wealth.) Unfortunately for me (and me alone, based off of the reviews) he later became the shy tongue tied Darcy during part of the story. Of course that is MY let down. This book is still a good read and I would recommend it.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 8, 2024I read the preview before checking this book out in kindle unlimited, and was curious, but not truly sold. As I continued reading though, the characters grew on me, and I continued reading throughout the day, in whatever time blocks I could snatch.
I will definitely read more by this author.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 9, 2021I couldn't really get into this book. Elizabeth and Darcy seemed off. I am a lover of true to character versions as well as drastically out of character books. So it wasn't so much that they were out of character but that their characters fluctuated oddly. Elizabeth falling in love with Darcy because he was arrogant and prideful, didn't like a smooshy, sentimental Darcy. Almost wanting him to bark abruptly at her. Which, don't get me wrong, I could get into. But then at other times she was angry at him for treating her and her associations that way. Truly put out with him, wanting him to change.
Darcy loved to flirt and tease, which I very much enjoyed. But then, gosh I just can't put my finger on it. They just didn't click with me I guess.
The writing was solid, plot alright. Things went differently than the original that's for sure so it was a nice original.
I do recommend as it wasn't bad. I just couldn't catch on, which may not be any fault of the author and just have been my mood while reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and light book
I like all of Grace Gibson’s books, because they are lovely, well written and light hearted. You end expending the hours smiling away without noticing. This is another example. I really liked this version of our favourite couple and Mary’s persona here turned out great. I always wished her such a happy ending. Truly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars enjoyed it
I thoroughly enjoyed this variation, it kind of turns the characters on their heads as there’s very little similarities between either Darcy or Elizabeth to 99% of other variations I’ve read that I think take the films into consideration as well as the book, but that’s the beauty of this book, it could be Austen‘s Darcy since we never actually get his side of the story and while we get many of Elizabeth’s actions and thoughts we never really get the depth of her feelings and emotions. I loved it, I loved his nickname for her and I truly enjoyed them together.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet and funny at the same time :)
I love, love, LOVE this book! It's witty and tender and oh my god, the push and pull between ODC is hilarious and makes me long for that kind of a relationship!
My P&P must-read and go-to re-read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
Silver Buckles is a very good variation. I truly enjoyed Elizabeth and Darcy's interactions. I thought their characterisations were good. Elizabeth is her clever and witty self, but it's not overdone. Darcy is slightly ooc and develops a funny bone but his new found dry humour stays within boundaries and is perfectly acceptable. My favourite scene has to be Darcy's visit to the ladies in Hunsford parlour. His barking two very awkward questions was hilarious and very endearing, I will give that to ODG! Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Authentic, funny and beautifully told
Grace Gibson’s version of this classic romance shows a genuine and delightful grasp of the period. Whist Darcy and Elizabeth cross swords in delicious banter, we are amused, moved and, as always, exasperated at the social restrictions strewn in their path.
The writing is intelligent and witty, the cast finely tuned, and the script totally engaging.
There are twists introduced throughout, as popular and not so popular characters show new weaknesses and strengths. I was particularly delighted to discover the alternative fate of Jane and the closer look at Mary’s development. This book is a real treat for Austen fans. More please, Grace Gibson!
