Not all self-discovery is positive ...

A woman listens to the song of the road and wonders if she has the strength to stay with her husband, this time. A journalist visits the opera and discovers a bitter history of failure alongside the music. An angry young boy finds the beach is not always a place of healing, and two lovers face their last day together with something like courage.

In this collection of twelve thought-provoking stories, a variety of very different characters confront the brokenness and despair of their lives, and begin a tentative journey towards the possibility of hope. Can they ever find their way back to the people they used to be?

Perfect for fans of stories that make you think ...

Reviews:

“Brooke is a brilliantly luminous writer in a variety of genres and people should be reading her stuff. Something that is unique to Brooke’s writing is her ability to interest me in things I would have thought I would dislike. This has me seeking out everything she has published.”

Anne Brooke is a brilliantly luminous writer in a variety of genres and people should be reading her stuff. Something that is unique to Brooke's writing is her ability to interest me in things I would have thought I would dislike. This has happened on more than one occasion and has me seeking out everything she has published.

This collection of short stories defies categorization because they are all over the place. Some are only a page or two long. Some, such as the title story, are a true short story. Some of the pieces are vignettes, just brief glimpses. All are very well-written, all made me say, "Oh, Anne, would you please make this longer?"

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb Collection of Short Stories!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 25, 2025
This is a brand new author to me. Short stories are a great way to decide if you like their writing style, and I definitely do!

The Singing Road is an entertaining collection of stories. There really is an excellent mixture of subjects in this book.

There is even a story called The Singing Road, which was interesting.
I also thought it cool that one story had a ‘Karen’ in it. The name has fallen out of the favour in recent years, so, it was good to see it used.

Although there were lots of entertaining stories, my favourite was The Green Stain. I’ve added it to my favourite bits below. It’s the first one. The bit I really thought was clever, was the ending, but of course I can’t give that away!

Highly recommended. Give it a read, you won’t be disappointed.
