Slave Mind (The Terran Legacy Book 1) Kindle Edition

3.9 out of 5 stars 31 ratings

It was supposed to be a simple – if hugely lucrative – job.

Captain Michael Dannage and the crew of the Hope’s Folly can’t pass up the opportunity to salvage a fleet of warships from the long dead Terran Imperium. Things never go right for Dannage, but he never expected them to get this out of hand.
The Terran ships aren’t as derelict as everyone thought and the malicious force that destroyed the Terrans thousands of years ago is still alive and still bent on humanity’s annihilation.
This could mean the end for all Dannage holds dear, and he’ll do whatever it takes to save the people he cares about. As enemies – both ancient and modern clash – it will take all Dannage’s skills and more than a little luck to survive.

They say ‘hope is not a strategy’, but it’s all Dannage has left.

" This is a book that has you reading more and more because you have that burning desire to find out what lies just around the corner" - Steven Robson (Reader's Favourite)

"Slave Mind for me was thrilling, captivating, and addictive right from the start" -Aimee Ann (Red Headed Book Lover)

I always liked making up stories. Now, I guess I'm doing it on a larger scale.

When I was a child, bedtime stories were down to my dad. In an effort keep himself sane, we quickly progressed from Puddle Lane and Thomas the Tank Engine to Terry Brooks and JRR Tolkien.

That, combined with a perpetual love of Star Trek (thanks again dad), has led to my joint loves of SciFi and Fantasy.

I only started writing in earnest while I was at university (studying Archaeology), where I wrote a bunch of Star Trek stories (that will never see the light of day).

After realising that a career in archaeology would mean having to go outside, I retrained in IT Support, and moved into writing original fiction.

Wow! This book was fast-paced and action packed. There were time when I felt out of breath on the characters behalf. But this isn't just a wonderful sci-fi action story it also has some wonderful characters. Arland the kickass former military woman with a soft spot in her heart for her companions (though I'm not sure she knows it), Hale a woman so lost in time and space that she can't even begin to process her greif but is still up for being a hero and saving the day, and of course Dannage, the quirky captain who has everything to lose (and more to gain than he knows.)

I would recommend this book to anyone in search of a well-written science fiction book packed with action and adventure... who maybe also happens to like character that go deeper than surface level.

Slave Mind is a good story with an intense plot and interesting characters but a lot of death and destruction. It needs some continuity editing. Doctor Vaughn can be in two places at once, and Captain Rossini has a gender identity crisis.

There's a simple way to make me a happy reader. About half way through now.

    1. Fun Characters
    2. A Mystery
    3. Feels like a Lived in Universe
    4. If I had to List Flavors: 1 Part Flash Gordon, 1 Part Halo, 2 Parts BSG, A Dash of Starship Troopers with a peppering of M.R Forbes.

Arland kinda reminds me of early Mara Jade. In terms of "professional" gotta get it done decision making. The captain, reminded me of Taylor, from Irresponsible Captain Taylor fame. It was a good comparison. A lovable motley crew.

Heck, if you love late 80s or early 90s space opera anime, this book feels like it was influenced by such. A sense of adventure. I love that in a book.

Edit: It will def. be interesting to see where this series goes in the future.

TL;DR: If you can get past the first 10% you get a 3 Star Spectacle. I did almost DNF this but I wanted to see it through as I was not offended I was just not 'feeling it'
And then I was rewarded with the other 90% of the show.
Why not 4 or 5 stars?
I did 'enjoy' the spectacle but there was just too many factors preventing a 4 or a 5.
The writing? Talented and Skilled but 'patched' with other influences to the point where it's a distracting pitch/tone shift.
I'll make it easy to understand. Imagine an all you can eat pizza buffet. And it's served pizza by pizza, you cannot go back, and you cannot stop. You must keep eating. You get all the flavors of the buffet in one long meal.
It's not what I expected but I read the whole thing.
There are points where an editor would have been lovely.
    Was it 'good pizza?'' Yes.
Do I want to know this author does more? Yes. Please do not see the 3 star as condemnation. It's just subjective opinion. If you can get past the negatives there are many positive things within the text.

I can't think of anyone who writes action better than Rob Dearsley. Slave Mind hooked me from its dreamy opening to its white-knuckle conclusion.
This is what a book should be: FUN TO READ! Big thumbs up.

The Terrans have arrived. Faster, stronger, and with better tech, they jump from planet to planet causing havoc and with one goal in mind: annihilate the humans.
Capitan Dannage and his crew will do all in their power to stop the might Terrans, even waking up one of them from their cryo-sleep and having her by their side, all the while trying to put the pieces together about why would the ancient race wake up and try to destroy them without giving it a second thought.
This fast-paced story won’t let you breathe as they go from adventure to adventure trying to stop the Terrans. The fate of humanity will be decided soon and Dannage and crew will have a front seat.
It was a fun read and I dearly loved Dannage and his constant inner conflicts. Yes the first part is a bit iffy but I hardly discard a book because of that if the narrative's interesting enough, which it was for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars An uplifting sci-fi adventure tale of hope and redemption
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 13, 2019
In a style that alludes to a classic Star Trek adventure with overtones of the Expanse, this book tells how the rag-tag crew of Hope's Folly, a small cargo ship, battle against seemingly overwhelming odds to save humanity from an apocalyptic alien invasion.
A slow start leads to tense action-packed scenes interspersed with quieter interludes where we learn more about the formative years of the main characters.
In the end it's an optimistic tale of how Captain Dannage and his disparate crew simply hope that by staying alive long enough they can redeem themselves, turn matters around and against all the odds, save the world.
A worthy first novel from new author Rob Dearsley - look forward to reading more about Hope's Folly in the future.

Tried to read whole of the book, managed about a third. Like SiFi but this was not for me
