Sledge and Claw (Hammer and Fist: Lextalion Book 1) Kindle Edition
Lex:
I work, I sleep, I fuck. That's what I do.
My alphabet soup agency recruited me because of my unique blend of magic and innate talent, but those come with a steep price and it’s getting harder to pay with every investigation.
I never thought Knoxville would be the place that kills me, but between someone targeting me to get me fired (or start a war; could go either way), taking on a naïve new trainee, and investigating a non-human trafficking ring, it looks like I'm about to bite off more than I can chew.
The question is, can I figure out what’s going on before it all blows up in my face?
Sledge and Claw is an MM Urban Fantasy with triggers for the horrors of slave trafficking and consent issues. There also happens to be a cliffhanger ending.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 30, 2022So we have Lex being sent to Knoxville to investigate a possible trafficking situation. When Lex takes care of the first issue, he's quickly thrust into another and someone doesn't want him to succeed. With his recording crystal constantly being turned off, an aggressive human female barging in on his private time and being bound to people he'd rather not; Lex is burning the candle on both ends. He barely has time to eat and sleep with all the issues that keep getting thrown at him. Along the way he's collecting people and making a family of his own. Will Lex be able to solve the trafficking case before someone gets him killed? And who's the hottie with the nerd glasses that he's attracted to and a little scared of, all at the same time?
This is another 5 star book by Jennifer. It hits the floor running and doesn't let up even at the cliffhanger. Lex is a likeable guy, even if he doesn't want to be and that's all because of Jennifer's great writing skills. I want to read more of Lex and the family he's making. The world building is really good and the characters are fully fleshed out. You'll either like them or hate them but you'll definitely feel like you know them when the book is over. I'm thoroughly convinced that there's nothing Jennifer can't write. She even got me to like a book about threesomes and I don't usually like anything more than one couple in a book. I highly recommend this book and all of the others that Jennifer has put out.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 9, 2024I read Murder Sprees and Mute Decrees first, and this is very different, more serious and plot heavy, but still as sexy. Really enjoyed this one! Think like Law & Order, X-Files and Supernatural had a baby, but instead of queer-baiting it was just queer. Very well paced, great characters and excellent world building!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 29, 2022Sledge and Claw is the first book in the Hammer and Fist series. This is not a romance focused book so bear that in mind when diving into the story.
One of the things I loved about this book is the world-building. It's been really good so far. A nice enough part of the story is focused in laying foundation for the series and introducing the reader to this world. It fleshed out the various creatures that inhabited this universe currently as well as the basic magical system in place. The details of Lex's job and what it entails and the organization he belongs to was expounded on as well. I loved the little touches pertaining to myths and legends. Though it did threw me off when the name Need Hawg was spelled like that instead of the usual Nidhogg / Níðhöggr.
The characters have been mostly likeable, interesting and diverse so far. I like Lex a lot. He is a pretty complex character with an intriguing and mysterious background. His curse is quite fascinating in nature and its effect has been shown and utilized nicely in the story. His ability to distinguish lies but with the side-effect of getting high on it when it gets too much is an interesting twist on an ability. I am still on the fence with Gillian though. She had a good development alongside Lex throughout the story, but I still am not totally sold on her character. I do think is she a pretty solid character overall it's just that I am not really connecting with her.
The pacing in the early sections of the story is a bit slow, but later on it flows much faster and the action ramps up. The plot is simple and easy to follow but the overall execution has been great. It does end in a cliffhanger which was has been softened a bit by the preview to the next book.
Overall, Sledge and Claw is an entertaining and I'd definitely recommend picking this up. Please do heed the warnings provided as they are there for a reason.
This would be 4.25 stars out of 5 stars for me.
I received an ARC of this book and I have chosen to publish my fair and honest review.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 30, 2023The world and characters created in this novel are vivid and complex. I couldn’t stop reading, compelled by the narrative to keep going. The world building is exquisite. Even though I still have a lot of questions, the world feels complete and well-realized. Lex is a fascinating character, with his mix of darkness and absolute loyalty. I found myself rooting for him and feeling for him in every situation. The other characters are just as interesting and I can’t wait to see what happens to them next.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 17, 2022As always, this was an imminently readable book. I knew going in that there would be a cliffhanger and as a rule, I don't read a series until it's completed. I am forever scarred (by degrees) by an author who promised a third book in a series that 8 years out has yet to be published.* Still, Cody is a skillful writer who has yet to disappoint so I decided to do something I haven't done in a long time -- trust.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book as I have enjoyed other books by this author. You will be hooked after the first few pages.
I discovered this author rather late in the game but have already burned through 2 series and a couple of titles published under her pseudonym. If you are trusting, trust that the 5 star rating is well deserved. Read her other series as well. You won't be disappointed.
*For the record, the unmentioned author has published several books since while never completing the 3rd book in the above-referenced series. 😒
- Reviewed in the United States on June 17, 2023This is definitely one the best books I’ve read in the last two years but it has the most infuriating and depressing cliffhangers ever! I am absolutely in love with all the main characters and this world or worlds as you will find out when you read it. The next book absolutely cannot come out fast enough. This is my second read through and it held me captivated the entire second read through just as much as the first! All the stars for this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars love this author
I love this author. Her books are so imaginative, and so engaging, I have binge-read each and every one of them.
This one is different than her previous series’, I think. It’s not really a romance. In fact, you don’t meet Lex’s possible romantic partner until halfway through the book. And there’s certainly no romance between the two.. but it’s an exciting story, the characters are loveable, and although I HATE a cliffhanger, I appreciate the warning in the book synopsis; and it’s not much of a cliffhanger, anyway- we know there’s a second book, so I’m not too worried.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!
Really loved this book, I wasn't really sure what to expect but I'm really pleased I gave it a read. Fantastic characters and great world-building. The plot is really engaging and fast paced without feeling rushed. I literally couldn't put it down!

5.0 out of 5 stars AMAZING fantasy story
I am in love. In love with this new series. In love with this world building. In love with the characters in this book. It’s way past my bedtime and I’m still awake, not because of my regular insomnia but because as soon as I started this book I couldn’t put it down. I’m enthralled. I so wanted to go slow and savor it but I gobbled it up in one sitting. The only problem is that I have to wait for the next one. Nooooooo. If you like adventure fantasy and mm romance then hurry and get this book. Enjoy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not the 5 star read I was expecting from this author
I have enjoyed everything I've read by this author to date, and found them to all be high quality works with amazing attention to detail - books I didn't want to put down. Which was why it was surprising that this book didn't have that same attention to detail. The editing needs some work, both grammar and typos, and there were jumps in the storyline - I found myself skimming back pages to try and figure out what I'd missed, only to find that I hadn't missed anything - something new was introduced in a way that assumed we knew what the author was talking about. I've never had that happen with a book from this author before. It was quite unexpected and limited my ability to really sink into the story.
The worldbuilding was interesting and had that unique flair I've come to associate with this author. Lex was an interesting character, but I found lacked some development as well. The way his backstory, heritage and abilities were revealed to us was disjointed, and in some cases very light on detail. The same happened with the character development for the secondary characters as well - Gillian was just 'off' to me and didn't seem consistent in the way she was developed as the series progressed. Same with Berry and Tor. I've been spoilt by this author's previous works where everything just flowed smoothly, was consistent and had great attention to detail - this wasn't like those.
If this is the first book you're trying from this author and finding it hard to get into like I did, please go read her other works. They are amazing reads, and to me, this book isn't a good example of her skill as a writer.
