Slices of Soul is a compelling and unusual collection of poetry which certainly does give the reader glimpses into the complex soul and unusual life of the poet.

I think it is important to note that the poet spent 13 years living in a Zen Buddhist Temple and that the poems featured in this book were written, during and after this period in her life. I believe that her spiritualism and surroundings had a bearing on the thoughts and ideas expressed through the poems in this book.

The poems are divided into sections: Shaved Head, written during her time at the Zen Buddhist Temple, Short Hair, written during the transitional period of her changing life circumstances, and Long Hair which effectively covers all the remaining sections in the book and were written after she'd adjusted to her new life.

I felt the tone of the poems changed over the course of the book from intense reflections on life, to studies of nature, to fierce expressions of emotion, to gentler articulations of love and contentment.

The two poems that impacted me the most in this collection are from the first two sections of the book, Shaved Hair and Short Hair:

    The Path
The ten directions all merge into one
    this winding road leads nowhere
    and goes straight there

    Lost and Found
    Deep dark depths
    I got lost on purpose
    this desolate place
    the only way
    to get my bearings

Poetry lovers who like poems that make you think about things and see them differently will appreciate this book.

The author is a fascinating person with a rich life, which she shares honestly and wholeheartedly through her poems.

While this volume didn’t resonate with me quite as much as it’s successor, there were still many poems that I loved.

Her poems dealing with her life as a Buddhist monk are beautiful and deceptively simple.

The poems about her amputated limb are raw with emotion and heart wrenching.

I particularly liked the poems that echoed the movements of nature.

Combined with her second book of poems, these two volumes make a beautiful book of thoughtful, moving poems that highlights the brightness of the author’s soul.

I don’t often read poetry. When I finally do, I tend to read a lot of it for a while. This book has started me on my binge.

The poet has organized her offerings in a clever way, and I really enjoyed the different sections, particularly “Soul Music.”

While it would be impossible to choose a favorite in this collection, a few that really stood out were Phantoms, Diamonds, Waiting, and Glitch. (I guess I have a thing for single-word titles.)

The foreward and a few little notes she included enhanced my reading experience. I highly recommend not skipping them.

This book is a joy to recommend. I’m off to read the next in this series.

This is the first time I’ve read Ms. Kent and I thoroughly enjoyed her contemporary verse. Each word counts and each poem paints a picture. Some melancholy and etched in pain. Some soar with joy.
What I love about poetry is that it gives insights into the author. Their verse shares pieces of themself with the reader. This book is no exception.
SLICES is a quick, lovely read.

“Slice of Soul” is a beautiful collection of poetry that tugged on my emotions. There is a story weaved into the poems that had a memoir feel to it. Each section was a narrative of the author progressing through periods of her life. So many feelings arose, but each one felt authentic and direct from the soul. I really connected to the ocean or guitar passages but appreciated each part of the journey. This is a book I will be reading again.

This is a quick read poetry book that deals with shorter poems saying more than one would imagine. There are able themes of isolation, simplicity, solitude, and rejection. The author makes reference to having been in a monastery for some years, which was intriguing in these times. There is a overriding thematic about deep personal loss from tragedy which made this endearing to me. This author knows of near madness, grief and suffering and I admire the people of the fire. Ultimately, the courage to write books is mentioned and life renewal came forward after so much loss, which is even more admirable. You just want to cheer this person that only the best comes to them the rest of their lives. This would be an interesting person to talk with.

What attracted me to this short book of poems was the fact that the author lived in a Zen Buddhist Temple for thirteen years. I follow the Buddhist Theravadin tradition myself, so I knew what I was in for… or so I thought.

What I found was a journey into the soul of a woman. The themes of loneliness, rejection, and solitude resonated throughout the pages. I knew the life lessons she learned as a monk would forever color her writing. Yet, I sensed a great tragedy in her life had brought her to live in a monastery, a rarity for western women. Written as a poetic memoir, Kent slowly reveals the details of her life.

    "The Path"

The ten directions all merge into one
    this winding road leads nowhere

(Kent, Harmony. Slices of Soul: A Collection of Contemporary Poetry (p. 1). Harmony Kent Author Services. Kindle Edition).

The author divided the book into three sections: Shaved Head, written during her time as a monk in the temple, Short Hair, written as she transitioned back into society, and Long Hair after she adapted to her newfound lifestyle.

Kent’s journey through each stage of her life is incredibly brave. No stranger to personal tragedy, she overcame her limitations with strength, love, and dignity—and it shows in her poetry. Each poem, from beginning to end, is a personal meditation on her path to enlightenment.

5.0 out of 5 stars A calming influence
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 28, 2022
I really liked this short collection of poems by Harmony Kent. I am not knowledgeable about the teachings of Zen from which she draws her inspiration from, but this didn’t matter to me as the writing was eloquent and calm, delightful in its delivery. I really enjoyed the structure which seemed to follow a pattern of growth and rebirth, as well as adjustment to new life. I liked how the author talks briefly about spently a long time in a Buddhist temple (which I think should be a story in its own right), and although the poetry has a personal touch, she does not make it about her. I feel that many people can relate to these poems as they are about finding calm and soul in the craziness of life. I am not well versed in poetry but these simple lines and influences are something that many can enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Slices of Soul is a treasure.
Reviewed in Canada on August 29, 2022
Harmony Kent’s first book of poems, Slices of Soul, is a treasure. I experienced a time when I was searching for existential answers. I sought churches, temples, and mosques, yes, and even lived in a Buddhist monastery, for a time. I learned that I didn’t have to wander the world seeking because what I was seeking was inside myself. Kent puts my experience in a few succinct words, “no longer shall I argue the merits of being a Christian, a Buddhist, a Muslim, Hindu, or a Jew” and “the resplendent soul I see inside—in here,” and in Unity, “the world is one.”
I also experienced “the dark night of the soul” and was reduced to “rock had become sand” before I accepted that “change” was necessary before I could see in Kent’s, Opening the Drapes, “a whole new world, crisp and clear.” And I’ve learned to be in the now— “Right Now—Everything just as it should be.”
Kent’s Slices of Soul is a tiny collection of words that stirs the heart and soul and excites the mind in a most momentous manner. I’ve read thousands of words, but few have left such an impression as Kent’s keeper—Slices of Soul. Thank you, Harmony, for sharing your life. You’ve raised my consciousness and in doing so, in some small way, you’ve raised the world's consciousness. Bless you, for that. Well deserved 5—Stars Marlene Cheng, author.

If I went into a nudist ministry would my poetry be as good?
I doubt it. Realy emotional poetry. Even the poems about her loosing her leg were kerfartick raver than depressing. Loved it more please.

4.0 out of 5 stars A compelling and thought provoking collection of poetry.

Slices of Soul, by Harmony Kent, is a compelling and thought provoking collection of poetry. The author bravely exposes herself in such an admirable way. I have read many poems two or three times to decipher the depth of meaning and I feel I've only touched the surface. My favourite pieces are 'No Resistance' and 'Unity', but I especially enjoyed 'Flashes' as I felt the author invited the reader into her world/experience in such a remarkable way. In my opinion this is a collection of poetry that must be read slowly if it is to be fully embraced. If you love thought provoking poetry I highly recommend Slices of Soul.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning and deeply affecting
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 16, 2015
I had no idea until I read this collection of poems that the outstanding and successful novelist Harmony Kent was originally a poet. And such a special one too. The inspiration for these poems was Harmony's 13-year stay in a Buddhist temple. During and from that experience she put together this stunning and deeply affecting collection. So far I have read all of the poems twice, some three times, and still do not feel that I have fully reached the meanings. But I can say this for sure. I found in Slices of Soul something approaching aesthetic bliss, a sense of being connected in some way to other states - like tenderness, kindness, ecstasy - where art is the norm.
