4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 84 ratings

There is no such thing as a vampire … or is there?

Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson are summoned to Dartmoor by an old schoolfriend of Watson’s, Bill Holcombe. His sixteen year old daughter Amelia, who died a month previously, has been seen wandering the village at night. Witnesses swear that she catches animals and sucks their blood. The whole neighbourhood fears the ‘Snow-White Lady’, and Holcombe is desperate to prove she is not a vampire.

The great detective's famous scepticism is put to the test in a mystery where boundaries blur between the living and the dead…

Liz Hedgecock grew up in London, England, did an English degree, and then took forever to start writing. After several years working in the National Health Service, some short stories crept into the world. A few even won prizes. Then the stories started to grow longer...

Now Liz travels between the nineteenth and twenty-first centuries, murdering people. To be fair, she does usually clean up after herself.

Liz’s reimaginings of Sherlock Holmes, her Pippa Parker cozy mystery series, and the Caster & Fleet Victorian mystery series (with Paula Harmon) are available in ebook and paperback.

Liz lives in Cheshire with her husband and two sons, and when she’s not writing or child-wrangling you can usually find her reading, messing about on Twitter, or cooing over stuff in museums and art galleries. That's her story, anyway, and she's sticking to it.

A bored Holmes is over joyed (about as much as Holmes gets over joyed),
to have a interesting case to sink his teeth into...
The Case of the Snow-White Lady is a short story, (66 pages) in a Halloween theme.
And, with that being the case (no pun intended), I will not go into further details,
as doing so, will spoil the story.
So, get yourself a cup of tea, and enjoy...oh yes, make sure the windows are locked.

    Nice work, indeed !

    Looking forward to reading more
    of her Sherlock stories.

Had "The House of Mirrors" on pre-order,
but for some strange reason, that book
    has been delayed/cancelled (?).

Always fun to read an adventure of Sherlock Holmes. The author stays true to the original takes and delivers the final punch to the reader's pleasant surprise. Short and sweet.

I learned something about arsenic. A common murder weapon, easily accessible just a few years ago. Also arsenic was a common ingredient in household items. Trust Holmes to make all the connections and solve a confusing case.

I enjoyed this. All such writers understandably try to recreate the prose and style of the original canon but not all succeed. Liz Hedgecock has managed to do so.

My one misgiving was at the end where the main protagonist has overcome her partner in crime in a manner which I thought was stretching feasibility. But, that apart, I enjoyed the book.

I also very much enjoyed the teaser for the next one as well. Good idea that. Gets you hooked.

Ms Hedgecock is, for the moment, the new provider of my regular Holmes fix. As good as any I've read in a while.

Confound you, Liz Hedgecock! You are the cause of my lack of sleep. I just wanted to read a few pages before settling down for the night, and ended up reading the whole thing, which left me tired and cranky in the morning! And it's all your fault for writing such a fantastic story. You could have written a boring drag of a story, which I would have had no difficulty in putting down, but no. You had to write a piece that I couldn't help but see through to the end. You could have turned out two cardboard cutout with familiar names, but you have instead captured the essence of Holmes and Watson perfectly, and this miniature masterpiece evokes the very best of ACD's triumphs. I'm reminded particularly of Hound of the Baskervilles, for obvious reasons, and it's a brilliantly crafted tale worthy of the great man himself. I'm only glad it isn't any longer than it is, otherwise I'd have had no sleep at all...

This novelette is another charming outing for Liz Hedgecock's re-imaginings of Holmes, again capturing the spirit of Conan Doyle's originals. The story is wonderfully intriguing and chilling (definitely living up to the Hallowe'en theme, and a nod to the Hound of the Baskervilles with the supernatural goings-on in the moors) but with a nice bit of chemistry too. Definitely one to devour (mwah-ha-ha!) in one sitting, preferably comfortably installed indoors next to a roaring fire on a spooky, stormy night...

Having enjoyed previous Sherlock themed books from this author I was not disappointed. I usually work out whodunnit but this one totally surprised me (I had to read the pages a few times to let it sink in!) A great atmospheric read that made me feel like I was a fly on the wall. Buy it!!
