The Difference Between Somebody and Someone (The Difference Trilogy Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 3,163 ratings

The world owes you nothing.

It took losing the woman I loved and facing the paralyzing task of moving on without her for me to truly understand that.

Consumed by regret and razor-sharp memories, I’d resigned myself to a life of loneliness until a survivor from the same plane crash that took my fiancée stormed into my life.

Remi Grey was chaos and sunshine, fire and freedom. With her in my arms, I began to believe that fate had other plans for me.

But as secrets of the past exploded around us, it seemed the only thing fated about our relationship was that I had been destined to lose her from the start.

The world owes you nothing. But for Remi, I would risk it all. No matter the cost.

Originally from Savannah, Georgia, USA Today bestselling author Aly Martinez now lives in South Carolina with her four hilarious children.

Never one to take herself too seriously, she enjoys movies that can surprise her with a twist, charcuterie boards, and her mildly neurotic golden retriever. It should be known, however, that she hates pizza and ice cream, almost as much as writing her bio in the third person.

She passes what little free time she has reading anything and everything she can get her hands on, preferably with a glass of wine by her side.

Queen of Twists!
5 out of 5 stars
Queen of Twists!
If you've read Aly Martinez before, you know she writes twists in her stories. While reading this one, I was trying to figure out the twist, and I failed. I thought I had a good idea about what was going to happen, but wow I am blown AWAY by this book. This is a trilogy, with cliffhangers, so be forewarned! I also feel that this book/trilogy could be triggering to some readers, so please be prepared. If you're a big believer in fate, you'll love this book. Especially since this is the first book in the trilogy, be prepared for lots of questions, and only a few answers. Remi and Bowen have amazing chemistry, you'll be rooting for them from page one. This book had me hooked right away, and I flew through it in one evening. I cannot wait for the next two books! TW: suicide, mass causality event, loss of a partner, drug use (off page)

I have but one regret. That I had this book on my Kindle for so long before I read it. I am just WOWed, but I don’t know why I’m so shocked, because it’s written in true Aly Martinez fashion. It packs a punch. I have downloaded the remaining two books in the trilogy

The synopsis reeled me in. I’m a huge fan of the show Manifest so this storyline revolving around a plane crash seemed right up my alley, minus any sci-fi aspects. Remi Grey is like a breath of fresh air with her persistent optimism and overshare type of humor despite the tragedy she endured. Bowen Michaels, a fellow survivor, catches her eye and while he respectfully tries to dissuade her, Remi isn’t easily budging. They had sizzling chemistry and cute banter, but it also felt very insta-love to me, especially given Bowen’s love history so I wasn’t quite sold on his feelings even though I had no doubt they were authentic, but I was enjoying the story nonetheless. However, being that this is written by Aly Martinez, there are surprises laying in wait and those early relationship feelings make more sense later. I was trying to work through what the potential twist would be and didn’t figure out as to what it actually wound up being. While that certainly explained a lot based on the clues planted, I wasn’t a fan of this turn of events. So while I’m now less enthused about the the whole Remi-Bowen ship and the that role fate plays, I do see that they are likely endgame. I still have questions and there remains a mystery to uncover that I want to find out the answers for.

I've been struggling to put into words all the thoughts and feelings swirling within me after having finished The Difference Between Somebody and Someone, but sadly, I'm not as eloquent as Aly Martinez. Plus this is just the first in her The Difference series! If I'm already this emotionally invested in Remi Grey and Bowen Michaels's story, I can't even imagine how the rest of the trilogy will eviscerate my poor, bruised heart. But hey, that's what the best stories do, right? They make an impact, and not a sudden one--it's the kind that builds with each page turned and chapter passed, and when you get to the end, you want to re-experience each high and low and every single thing in between. And this is an author whose work has taken bits and pieces of my heart, which is why I read anything and everything she pens, and I'm sure I'm not the only one!

But back to the first Difference book! Sigh. I'm still stuck on explaining how it's left me very much gobsmacked. I don't want to give out details, even the teeniest bit. I mean, sure, I've mentioned the main characters, twenty-nine-year-old real estate agent Remi Grey and thirty-two-year-old accountant Bowen Michaels, but that's it. I honestly feel that I'm doing you a favor by not saying anything else. Should you go into this blind? Absolutely. Did I read the blurb prior to reading the book? Yes, I did, but this was when the cover for the books were revealed earlier this month, so by the time I actually read the series starter, I couldn't recall what was in the blurb in the first place. So, my best piece of advice is to skip reading the blurb.

And now, here we are again at the part where I feel like I don't have adequate words to explain the impact this book had on me. Let me just share the three paragraphs I originally had in my notes as I was reading this: Paragraph One: GAH!; Paragraph Two: Le sigh.; Paragraph Three: O. M. G!!! Yep. That's it. If I sat down and spent more time, I could probably come up with a sufficiently acceptable wordy review, but I'm also trying to not post anything spoiler-like. So basically, allow me to leave you with three pieces of advice: 1. Go in blind; 2. Read this book; 3. Prepare to be awed. Five-plus stars for The Difference Between Somebody and Someone.

As is usual with me, I hadn’t read the synopsis. So when I was three-quarters of the way into the book, I started to investigate. The Difference Between Somebody and Someone is the first book in The Difference Trilogy, and goodness me, what a heartstopper it is.

It all seemed too good to be true. Both Martinez’s protagonists had been through thick and thin but observing them together was an experience in itself. Well, you’d have to be thick-skinned not to fall for Remi. She’s a vivacious, clumsy plant lover who bumps into Bowen in such a way that I couldn’t help laughing. Especially seeing that he’s nothing like her.

Martinez gives her readers more of Bowen’s backstory than Remi’s, and as their story progressed, I discovered why he was scared of getting involved on a deeper level. But it didn’t surprise me that he couldn’t avoid the inevitable. Remi is a ray of sunshine in his dark world. He learns to smile and make plans again and believe me, she all-embraces them with an open heart.

Martinez planting little clues into their story kept me guessing, and even though I thought I had a good idea of where she was leading me, I was way off the mark—and I loved it! Also, I have to mention these two’s chemistry. It is off the charts if not for my liking, a tad too quick to start. But that said, as a couple who can’t keep their hands off each other, it is so them.

My book buddies know that I am a banter and suspense snob. And ooh boy, does Martinez deliver hands down. Brilliant storytelling, secondary character development, and a jaw-dropping twist ending that still isn’t over has me itching to get my hands on The Difference Between Somehow and Someway. Simply bravo, Martinez!

Thankfully this series will have a quick/short wait in between releases because this story was just 🤯

I honestly don't know how to review this without giving away spoilers. Read the blurb and trust that Aly Martinez wrote a beautiful book with great characters, secondary characters don't have as much time on the page but they are still pretty good too. And the story itself is pretty freaking good! Poor Bowen, Reimi and Sally! It's *not* a love triangle and there's no cheating either. Just a lot of traumdid. I suppose I was just shocked more than anything. And surprised!

Please do yourself a favour and read this book. If the blurb isn't enough to convince you, just think that some big romancea. Surprisingly this book didn't make me cry. But that's not enough of a barometer to tell the book slayed me. Because it authors have been talking about this book too. 😉
