The Difference Between Somebody and Someone (The Difference Trilogy Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 3,152 ratings

The world owes you nothing.

It took losing the woman I loved and facing the paralyzing task of moving on without her for me to truly understand that.

Consumed by regret and razor-sharp memories, I’d resigned myself to a life of loneliness until a survivor from the same plane crash that took my fiancée stormed into my life.

Remi Grey was chaos and sunshine, fire and freedom. With her in my arms, I began to believe that fate had other plans for me.

But as secrets of the past exploded around us, it seemed the only thing fated about our relationship was that I had been destined to lose her from the start.

The world owes you nothing. But for Remi, I would risk it all. No matter the cost.

Originally from Savannah, Georgia, USA Today bestselling author Aly Martinez now lives in South Carolina with her four hilarious children.

Never one to take herself too seriously, she enjoys movies that can surprise her with a twist, charcuterie boards, and her mildly neurotic golden retriever. It should be known, however, that she hates pizza and ice cream, almost as much as writing her bio in the third person.

She passes what little free time she has reading anything and everything she can get her hands on, preferably with a glass of wine by her side.

HEART SWOONING AND MIND BLOWN!

HEART SWOONING AND MIND BLOWN!
4 STARS! “There are two types of people in the world, Remi. There are a million somebodies on this planet. But there’s a huge difference between somebody and someone. From the moment we met, I knew you, my beautiful, crazy woman, were definitely someone." Man, I had forgotten the number this author could do on one's emotions and brain! LOL! Ok, so the first 30% or so of this book drug in many places for me and felt repetitive. I liked the beginning a certain stand out scenes, but nothing kept me glued to the pages. It was really from the last half on that I could not walk away from this story and I was ALL IN! Bowen lost his girlfriend on a plane crash that he was on. Even prior to the crash, there were issues in the relationship. He carries around guilt over all the things he could've done differently to avoid his current reality. When Remi stumbles into him, he fights his attraction to her and wants no part of anything to do with her. Bowen Michaels, although an interesting character, wasn’t interested in me. Or so I’d thought. A glass of white wine landed on the bar in front of me and a bottle of water slid in front of Margret. “From the gentleman who just left,” the bartender said. I bit my bottom lip and looked over my shoulder, but Bowen was long gone. Okay, maybe that hadn’t been a strike after all. Maybe the game hadn’t even started yet. There really isn't a lot I can say here. I'm just gonna say...READ IT! It's a solid start to what I'm sure is going to be another amazing series from this author. The banter between these two was so witty on and hilarious and the steam was grade-A, as usual with this author. I will be over her salivating for my next fix from this series!

Wow, just wow. I’m pretty speechless after reading this one. Aly Martinez is just amazing, one of the best storytellers there is. I don’t know how she does it, but she gets me every. single. time! When I think I have it figured out, she throws me for a loop, and she does it so seamlessly, I just never see it coming!

The Difference Between Somebody and Someone is a stunningly emotional and dramatic story that made me laugh and swoon as I fell in love with these characters and their amazing story. It’s a story of grief and loss and finding the strength to continue on after a tragedy, and it’s an incredible romance that completely captured my heart. I loved this book so much! Bowen and Remi are fantastic characters who are just incredible together. They have been through so much, and I loved watching them face it all honestly and realistically. I loved watching their relationship develop, and we get the most incredible romance that is passionate and so freaking swoony. It felt real. I could feel the emotion between these two, and it was just perfect for them – the pacing, the timing, the way it all unfolded so naturally. However, since this is an Aly Martinez book, nothing is really what it seems and there are secrets that are uncovered and twists and turns I didn’t see coming, even though I thought I had all figured out.

Aly Martinez sets up the reader for an epic conclusion with this trilogy. She’s laid the perfect foundation for Remi and Bowen's journey, and I seriously can’t wait to see what she has in store. I’m so glad these books are releasing so close together because I’m not sure if I’m able to wait long for the next one!

The synopsis reeled me in. I’m a huge fan of the show Manifest so this storyline revolving around a plane crash seemed right up my alley, minus any sci-fi aspects. Remi Grey is like a breath of fresh air with her persistent optimism and overshare type of humor despite the tragedy she endured. Bowen Michaels, a fellow survivor, catches her eye and while he respectfully tries to dissuade her, Remi isn’t easily budging. They had sizzling chemistry and cute banter, but it also felt very insta-love to me, especially given Bowen’s love history so I wasn’t quite sold on his feelings even though I had no doubt they were authentic, but I was enjoying the story nonetheless. However, being that this is written by Aly Martinez, there are surprises laying in wait and those early relationship feelings make more sense later. I was trying to work through what the potential twist would be and didn’t figure out as to what it actually wound up being. While that certainly explained a lot based on the clues planted, I wasn’t a fan of this turn of events. So while I’m now less enthused about the the whole Remi-Bowen ship and the that role fate plays, I do see that they are likely endgame. I still have questions and there remains a mystery to uncover that I want to find out the answers for.

As is usual with me, I hadn’t read the synopsis. So when I was three-quarters of the way into the book, I started to investigate. The Difference Between Somebody and Someone is the first book in The Difference Trilogy, and goodness me, what a heartstopper it is.

It all seemed too good to be true. Both Martinez’s protagonists had been through thick and thin but observing them together was an experience in itself. Well, you’d have to be thick-skinned not to fall for Remi. She’s a vivacious, clumsy plant lover who bumps into Bowen in such a way that I couldn’t help laughing. Especially seeing that he’s nothing like her.

Martinez gives her readers more of Bowen’s backstory than Remi’s, and as their story progressed, I discovered why he was scared of getting involved on a deeper level. But it didn’t surprise me that he couldn’t avoid the inevitable. Remi is a ray of sunshine in his dark world. He learns to smile and make plans again and believe me, she all-embraces them with an open heart.

Martinez planting little clues into their story kept me guessing, and even though I thought I had a good idea of where she was leading me, I was way off the mark—and I loved it! Also, I have to mention these two’s chemistry. It is off the charts if not for my liking, a tad too quick to start. But that said, as a couple who can’t keep their hands off each other, it is so them.

My book buddies know that I am a banter and suspense snob. And ooh boy, does Martinez deliver hands down. Brilliant storytelling, secondary character development, and a jaw-dropping twist ending that still isn’t over has me itching to get my hands on The Difference Between Somehow and Someway. Simply bravo, Martinez!

I cannot believe this story! It was outstanding. If you’ve read this author then you know she’ll give you all the emotions plus the SEXY plus a twist that will leave you gob smacked. Well, this is one of her twisty best. I didn’t see it coming and I looked so hard. Nothing made sense, except the swoon worthy romance between the hunky Bowen and the sassy Remi. After that heartbreaking beginning with Bowen’s past being revealed and the horrific crash that affected the characters this is a dreamy love affair between two incredible characters. I love them both so much but Remi is special. She is wonderful in so many ways as she sees what she wants and goes after it. Then Bowen turning from a broody grump, albeit sexy, to a heartthrob is a heart melting moment. I just couldn’t figure out why he was love bombing her so hard. Not that she wasn’t right there with him. But it was just too delicious a romance to worry about. To go with all the hot and steamy was the heart stopping OMG moment. Then the questions started as I looked at the story completely different. What had I missed? The author did an outstanding job of giving a subtle mystery with flashbacks that only fill in a few blanks. The surprise twist was so unexpected and shocking for me and called for new questions. I can’t wait for the next installment to see this play out. A must read! Need more stars!

Thankfully this series will have a quick/short wait in between releases because this story was just 🤯

I honestly don't know how to review this without giving away spoilers. Read the blurb and trust that Aly Martinez wrote a beautiful book with great characters, secondary characters don't have as much time on the page but they are still pretty good too. And the story itself is pretty freaking good! Poor Bowen, Reimi and Sally! It's *not* a love triangle and there's no cheating either. Just a lot of traumdid. I suppose I was just shocked more than anything. And surprised!

Please do yourself a favour and read this book. If the blurb isn't enough to convince you, just think that some big romancea. Surprisingly this book didn't make me cry. But that's not enough of a barometer to tell the book slayed me. Because it authors have been talking about this book too. 😉
