SHE IS NOT INTERESTED IN, OR IN ANY NEED OF - A HUSBAND. HE IS AS RELUCTANT TO TAKE A WIFE...

Sophie, Lady Lewisham, is an independent woman of means, who has just emerged from her year of mourning. Determined to further her studies of the classical world, she accepts an invitation from her deceased husband's cousin Lady Renfrew to visit London and acquire the permissions and letters of introduction she requires to travel. Her brief experience of the fortune hunters and gossip-mongers that litter the ton, only make her more certain of her plans.

Sir Philip Bray is a confirmed bachelor with his own demons. When he receives an unexpected letter from his long lost friend, Harry, Viscount Treleven, who is ill in Pisa, he is determined to bring him home.

Neither have any time or inclination for romance. However, their paths cross in England, France and Italy.

Could he be the hero she thinks she does not need or want?

I live by the sea in Plymouth, England, with my partner Dave. I like reading, sailing, and exploring in our camper van. I love getting up early to watch the sunrise in summer, and long quiet evenings by the wood burner in our cabin on the cliffs in Cornwall in winter.

I write traditional Regency romance novels that respect the mores of the era. I like to think my characters, though flawed, are likeable, strong, and true to the period.

Great book!! I stayed up way too late last night finishing it.
So many great facets that is was just super enjoyable!
Excellent characters and a wonderful plot. Beautiful settings - that are well described - without being overdone.
I highly recommend this book - and this author - to anyone who likes Regency setting, clean romance - with great plots and characters!
Note - There are a few mild swear words (the 'D' word) - but they are infrequent.
I am now on to the third book in the series!

For the first time in her life, Sophie felt free. Her husband having died and left her with all his unentailed wealth, Her desire to learn and see ancient artifacts had led she and her friend to plan a tour of the continent. It was a dream to hold onto, not fully formed but certainly exciting.
An enjoyable read with another of Ms. Hambly's strong, intelligent, and sensible heroines and an equally desirable hero.

I have recently conceived a passion for regency romances and have read more than 30 so far (thank you, Kindle unlimited”). I found this to be refreshing and believable. I enjoyed the different characters and now find I have to read the first in this series. And, of course, the ending made me cry. Always a good way to end a romance novel!

I very much liked the personality of the heroine. However, the hero is the typical tortured soul, full of resentment and guilt. I feel there could have been more romance, rather than waiting for the last pages.

Fantastic fun story, well written and carried through.
This series is great and worth reading.
I would highly recommend this author.

I enjoyed reading about a strong and very like able heroine. This book had one as well as a good hero with no kidnapping and no eves dropping with wrong information. It had a slow buildup from dislike to love in the end. A very good read which I would recommend to any and all readers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very sweet

There was some geographical interest and history and even literary additions that created a good background along with a charming story. Certain continuing events glossed over rather abruptly but were entirely forgivable as the descriptive narrative moved along less predictably than most romances and a deal more mentally visual. Indeed it left a smile on one's face. A book to read again perhaps, after a couple of years.

Married young to a older gentleman. Thankfully she blossoms. As a young widow she travels to enjoy her quest for spreading her wings. A family friend rescues her and then she helps him in his mission to save his friend. Eventually they return to England. After a while, they realize they belong together. Well written.

4.0 out of 5 stars A well-constructed travel log with a rich cast and textured buildup

Unrelated but united in purpose, a coven of single-minded matchmaking ladies coalesce to throw the lovely young relic of a wealthy old man in the path of a dashing, heart-sore but highly eligible confirmed bachelor. Their paths are made to cross in their travels on the Continent and the voyage of discovery through thrilling vistas and ancient cultures winds it's challenging way to emotional maturity and passion. The prickly heroine, her reluctant knight and the assorted unwitting or willing conspirators are well-etched and often endearing.

Not very convinced by use of period language but descriptions of scenery, clothing and characters make up for this distraction.

A most original twist on some Regency tropes. A young widow finds her HEA with a hero who finally lays his demons to rest. The author handles her diverse cast with panache. Characters have depth and th character driven plot does not depend on gothic villains to retain the reader’s interest.
