Spark: A Second-Chance MM Romance (North Star Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.1 4.1 out of 5 stars 119 ratings

One look, and it was like falling in love the first time.

Everything changed the moment Hugo met Kevin. They were only teens, and despite many obstacles, they fell in love. But young loves drift apart.

Hugo hasn’t been in love since. Dating is a chore, his drag queen persona and acting gigs are always an issue, so he’s just done with men . . . until he runs into Kevin at the lake.

Years after their last kiss, the spark is still strong, but life is complex. Kevin lives in the shadow of divorce and is navigating single fatherhood. Plus no one knows he’s bisexual.

Rekindling their romance is easy away from the demands of the city, but what about when real life kicks in?

Does their love stand a chance this second time around?

Spark is book one in the North Star Trilogy, a love story that spans twenty years. Friendship, single fatherhood, family life, angst, hurt/comfort, past abuse themes, medical caregiving, as well as life’s celebrations and challenges are found in this novel. Family is central to this saga that will stick with you long after you finish the series.

From the Author

The North Star Trilogy is a saga spanning three books over several years following the lives of Hugo Thorson and Kevin Magnus. Hugo and Kevin grow and change and fall deeper in love with every book, so the men they are at the start of this saga are different than the men at the end of the trilogy.

Spark is the beginning of their journey, where they get to know each other and see if they'll fit. In Fusion, obstacles get in the way of their dreamed future, but here, they are given the opportunity to grow as individuals and strengthen their relationship so they can survive what's in store. In Flare, Hugo and Kevin must fight for their happily ever after. And it is a HEA!

I hope you follow along on their entire journey. Parts of the story will be hard to read. You'll want to yell at Hugo and Kevin at different times. In other parts, you'll want to cheer. In the end, Hugo and Kevin will reveal themselves and prove why they deserve the hashtag #HugoKevin4ever. ;)

Now for some notes on Act I of
North Star Trilogy:

Most of
Spark is set in 2013. I chose not to bump the story to today because the world has changed a lot, including the 2015 US Supreme Court ruling on same-sex marriage. 2013 was the year marriage equality was signed into law in Minnesota after a hearty fight the year prior. I wanted to retain the uncertainty of that time because it plays into the plot.

A few chapters are set in the 90s, before cell phones were commonplace, a luxury I was happy to leave behind. Narration, settings, and characters will easily guide your reading, but I included Easter eggs to clue you in. If the chapter is a list of three things, you can bet it is set in high school.
SPAM, Arcades, & Kisses is one, so keep an eye out.

Posy Roberts started reading romance when she was young, sneaking peeks at adult books long before she should’ve. Textbooks eventually replaced the novels, and for years she existed without reading for fun. When she finally picked up a romance two decades later, it was like slipping on a soft hoodie . . . that didn’t quite fit like it used to. She wanted something more.

She wanted to read about men falling in love with each other. She wanted to explore beyond the happily ever after and see characters navigate the unpredictability of life. So Posy sat down at her keyboard to write the books she wanted to read.

Her stories have been USA Today’s Happily Ever After Must-Reads and Rainbow Award finalists. When she’s not writing, she’s spending time with her family and friends and doing anything possible to get out of grocery shopping and cooking.

I’m one of the lucky people who read Spark as a first edition and now Spark as the second edition! Kevin and Hugo are one of those couples who stay with you and they are high on my list of favorites. As for the second edition, the pacing is much more efficient, the extra words are gone and you get to see a bit more of how Kevin really and truly struggles with all the things that are expected of him by his father while still trying to keep the love of his life happy. Kevin is much more likable in this edition. The story is essentially the same but little tweaks were made that pack a whole lot of punch. Hugo was always my favorite but man, Kevin really tried hard to take that place this time around. The story itself is a second chance love story. After seventeen years Hugo and Kevin run into each their again and the timing finally seems right for them to get their happily ever after, even with the added challenge of Kevin’s two kids, who become a huge part of the story. The secondary cast in this series is dynamic and totally necessary. Will Kevin and Hugo finally get their HEA?! (Of course they will, but not without some tears and not immediately, it’s is a trilogy after all!) Posy is at the top of my list for autobuys and I’m so glad to have revisited these guys!

Having read all the glowing reviews I decided to download the first book in this series. Let me start by saying that I agree with everyone that the characters, all of the quite frankly, are very well written and the back story was interwoven into the present day with excellent ease. In general it was a great story of love lost and re-found.

My only "beef" was that the story lacked a certain level of realism. As a gay high school student Hugo never had to deal with a lot of the issues a real teen high school student would have. Granted Kevin's father was a jerk, but for as much "hanging out" together that they did, Hugo and Kevin were never confronted. That just doesn't seem realistic.

While it was also great fortune that they found each other again it all seemed to go just a little too smoothly. With the exception of one incident - the drunk bully - Hugo and Kevin's relationship never hits a snag. Again, not very real-world. People say they read to escape, with which I agree, but I also think a good storyline should have a little angst/tension to keep it real.

Still, I liked the book. I will probably download the second book as I do like the author's writing style.

I've been in a real reading slump lately, everything I've read has been mediocre at best. Unfortunately, Spark by Posey Roberts did not save me from the blah. It was just a very simple story that had one super sharp exciting piece of life and that was Miss Cherri and regrettably, getting to know her was such a small part of the story. It's was what I could have wanted to read about. If Roberts had had the wherewithal to really focus in on this interesting aspect of this character's life we would've had a much more captivating and unique story instead of a rather been there done that over and over and over. The kids, Summer and the ex-wife were fine.

Quick Note: This book is the first in a serial and doesn’t end with the HEA. It ends on a more HFN.

Kevin and Hugo were friends in high school that grew to be more. Unfortunately, Kevin’s dad managed to create a rift between them that lasted over a decade. A chance meeting at a friend’s vacation spot reignited those old feelings.

The first part of this story has some flashback moments, which I’m not really a fan of, but they didn’t break the flow of the story too much. I would have preferred the back story as the first few chapters, then move to the present.

Despite the flashbacks, I really enjoyed this story. I love how Kevin realizes that he doesn’t want to be the kind of father his was and does what he can to prevent that. Hugo, after having some horrible past relationships, manages to get through some of his anxiety to finally go after what he wants. I love his interaction with Kevin’s kids and how he realizes he really can be part of their family.

Love a great second chance at love and this book definitely is one of them. Kevin and Hugo's story was something I couldn't put down. I can't wait to start the next one to find out more of these characters.

I can't believe this book doesn't have any reviews yet so I had to write about it. This is a pretty big deal for me because I've read 1500 books in the last 3 years and I hardly write reviews!

I absolutely loved this book! And I loved, loved, loved Hugo and Miss Cherrie Pop! Cherrie - you go girl! This book has great characters, but the one thing that really stuck out for me was that they had integrity - such a hard thing to hold onto anymore. And I was so jealous of Hugo's level of self-awareness and self-worth! This book isn't a tear jerker but it did make me tear up with happiness. Even though there are several sex scenes, it isn't all about the sex, it's just an added bonus and I feel it's used appropriately throughout the story. I don't want to give away spoilers, but there are quite a few special scenes that will leave a lasting impression on you. I loved the private time between Kevin and Hugo in the lake at night and the scene where Hugo is showing Kevin his personal photos can not be described as anything but poignant.

I can't wait until the next book is out!!!!

This story has strong bones and is well conceived. However, I was surprised that it was in part a YA romance, and that threw me off, as I'm not a fan of YA romances. I bore with the flashbacks for the backstory they provided, but I didn't enjoy this as much as I might have had I not had to wade through teenage angst and sexual exploration. So this rating is for the adult parts. As a whole, the story is very emotionally charged, and the choices that Kevin and Hugo must make are certainly consuming to them both.

This book was a little slow to get under my skin but the characters were so well drawn that they squirmed their way in. The flashbacks gave a good insight into the lives of the two men as they claw back what they've lost while they've been apart. Both the main characters have taken paths which the other has to deal with. The sex develops nicely and you see the difference between Hugo and Kevin's sex life as teenagers and as mature men. I would have liked an epilogue to round the story off.
