Sparrow: An M/M Enemies-to-Lovers Romance (Rebel Sky Ranch Book 2) Kindle Edition
I like horses better than most people. After years of supporting our local equine rescue, it’s safe to say that I have a certified hate-on for the rodeo. So why is Luke McCall, injured rodeo diva, in my training paddock?
I feel bad that he was outed by the media, and I get the need to regroup out of the spotlight. I might even be willing to admit that he’s a little more vulnerable than his Rodeo King persona would suggest.
But, seriously—why does he have to recover in my bunkhouse?
I thought volunteering at a queer-friendly horse ranch was a stroke of brilliance—I’d get to hang out with horses while rebuilding strength and mobility after my injury. Win-win, right? Wrong.
Rebel Sky’s gorgeous foreman hates my guts on sight, even if he is willing to protect me from the bigots who just want a shot at the fallen cowboy.
What would it take to get him to see that I’m a good man with a soft heart and a helpful little rope kink?
Enemies-to-lovers, opposites attract, hurt-comfort, rope play.

About the author

Hi there! I write gay romance, which is to say that I curse way too much, drink exactly the right amount of red wine, and sleep far too little. I’m also lucky enough to live in Central Texas with my wife and two dogs, where the astonishing diversity of humans and landscapes and tattoo shops serve as my muse.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 15, 2021When McCall was mentioned in Goodnight, I knew that his and Sparrow's story would be enemies-to-lovers, even if the animosity was just on Sparrow's side, and that's exactly what happened. But just about everything else that happened in the book surprised me in the best of ways.
Of course it's Kelly Fox, so I knew it was going to be intelligent, well-written, sexy-hot, and laugh-out-loud funny, with wonderful, realistic characters. However, I expected McCall, whose first name is Luke, to be harder, rougher around the edges. He's a rodeo man, a bronc rider, after all, but he's genuinely sweet, kind and gentle...and rope kink is part of who he is, not just part of what he does.
I didn't expect him to be a survivor of domestic abuse, and for that abuse to be an integral part of the story. Kelly handles the topic with the same grace and finesse that she's employed with other sensitive topics, though, so for every heavy scene in the book, there's lightness and humor to balance it.
Sparrow, the eponymous ranch foreman had harder edges than I expected, but that's okay, because it made him even more interesting than I anticipated he would be. Rope kink is a way of life for him, too, as is caring for the animals and people he cares about.
You could read this book as a standalone, because there's enough exposition, but you should probably at least read Goodnight first because it sets up this series and because it's equally as good as Sparrow. I do always recommend starting with Scout and the Lavender Girl, a FF romance that introduces many of the characters of Fox-world, or with Sanctuary, the first of the Wrecked series, but at this point, I'm just saying jump in wherever and then go back to the beginning.
I fell in love with all the new characters who were introduced, and had fun with visits from favorite characters from previous series. I can't wait to see what happens next!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 15, 2021I love Sparrow even if I wanted to tell him to be nice at the beginning of this story. He feels deeply and deeply hates the rodeo and everything to do with it. Luke has been hiding his sexuality and people have been making assumptions about him using incorrect information. He is hurt and needs a safe place to heal and relax. He bumps into Sparrow who instantly hates him.
Things turn for the two of them when a nasty piece of work says the wrong thing to Luke and Sparrow puts them in their place which was really awesome and funny. I really like how the guys come together and all of the rope work. Rope work is really important on a horse farm. ;)
This story has wonderful characters and an appearance from Odd and Anders which everyone needs in their life. I think things progress nicely and love all of the little moments together. Sparrow puts himself outside of his comfort zone for Luke and it means everything.
Sparrow's dad. There is going to be so much fun with that man. He and all the guys are great. Sparrow's mom is awesome too and everyone needs a mom like that.
This is a fantastic read and I'm so happy that I got an ARC of it. This is my honest and voluntary review and opinion of this book. I can't wait for everyone else to start reading this story.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 16, 2021Kelly Fox has done it again! Another absolutely sweet with some low angst romantic HEA. Sparrow and Luke individually are incredible characters and having them be together was truly perfection.
Sparrow loves his life at Rebel Sky Ranch. He works with people he considers family and he spends his days taking care of the animals he loves. His favorite part is training the horses and working with them individually but he doesn’t get much time for it anymore. After his boss makes him go hang up flyers at the Rodeo for a new ranch hand he has to witness one of the worst rides there could be. The rider is injured and the horse loses their life. After seeing that, he realizes he could never respect someone from the rodeo as an employee.
Luke is the best bronc rider in the circuit and is nicknamed the Rodeo King. He’s still recovering from a broken hip but he has to ride. He’s hoping fit a good ride but as soon as he mounts his new bronc he knows it’s not going to end well. Almost soon as he’s out of the pen he is thrown from the horse. Next thing he knows he’s waking up strapped to a gurney with a doctor hovering over him.
After a month of recovery Luke realizes he may be better off trying to heal while working on a real ranch. He applies for Rebel Sky Ranch and is hired by Tripp even though Sparrow disapproves. Luke likes Sparrow immediately but Sparrow feels the exact opposite. Reading each step of their relationship grow was amazing. I really felt connected to both of the main characters and understood where they were coming from. This was a beautiful story that I will definitely be reading again.
I did receive a free ARC of this book but that did not influence my review.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 9, 2025This book started as simple enemies to lovers but it’s so much more! I loved this book so much. I was just blown away by how loving and kind Luke is despite all the horrible ways he’s been treated. It took awhile but seeing Sparrow become his safe place was just so lovely and special. I love the family at Rebel Sky and I’m so excited to keep reading their stories. The spice was amazing, the chemistry between these two is off the charts and the rope play and dominance was amazing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ranchhands, rodeo, romance, and a little rope, too
Sigh. This book was so lovely.
What I loved about it:
- Interesting, three dimensional characters.
- Well plotted, expertly paced story.
- Wonderfully vivid supporting characters.
- Kelly’s distinctive witty banter and clever Star Trek references.
- There’s a pool party! And a little shibari!
- What I loved most though, was the chemistry between the two main characters, and that it takes Sparrow a while to figure out why Luke gets under his skin so much. Meanwhile, Luke just kinda patiently waits for him while doing his thing.
This is a very satisfying romance with a happy ending that stands beautifully on it’s own, even though it’s technically the second installment of the Rebel Sky Ranch series. If you’re already a fan of Kelly’s work, there are a number of delicious little cameos from much loved characters, that are so much fun to read.

4.0 out of 5 stars The King and the Sparrow
✔ Letto in lingua originale!
Per me è ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤

5.0 out of 5 stars Rodeo King
Good story I like how Anders is yet again makes a quick appearance to threaten someone lol. Sparrow is really testy with our Rodeo King but they get passed all that and make a cute couple I can’t believe everyone’s practically slept with Sparrows dad lol.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fast paced, friction and fun!
I'm loving these characters and found family. I love the teasers for the next books and have been devouring them all from the shared world!
Sparrow and Luke and great together and I love that Kelly always has more to the character hidden to reveal as you read. It's just enough to tease but never overdone or frustrating. I'm looking forward to listening to the rest of this series!
