A Splendidly (Un)suitable Match: A Pride & Prejudice Variation (Love's Little Helpers) Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 1,385 ratings

When love needs a helping hand — or paw.

Fitzwilliam Darcy has his hands full. His cousin had his heart broken, his sister’s confidence was recently shattered, one of his closest friends has taken on more responsibility than he can possibly handle, and an overbearing social climber has decided to prove to Darcy that she is his perfect match.

When all of them travel together to Netherfield Park, everything goes wrong. Darcy finds himself dancing when he would rather not, cavorting with mules, and laughing with an impertinent young miss who shows him the lighter side of life.

Elizabeth Bennet’s sympathies often extend to the disadvantaged and mistreated. So, when she meets Fitzwilliam Darcy under less than flattering circumstances, her heart goes out to the unfortunate gentleman. Extending him her friendship and her humor, she tries to be content with her lot while helping her dearest sister and friend find love with their new neighbors at Netherfield Park. But the more she comes to know Mr. Darcy, the greater his danger to her heart.

With the help of a troublesome Maltese puppy and the interference of a tenacious rival whose tactics backfire at every turn, Mr. Darcy discovers that to win Miss Elizabeth’s heart, he must become the gentleman she believes him to be.

A Splendidly (Un)suitable Match is a light-hearted, low-angst, Regency Rom-Com inspired by Jane Austen's timeless classic, Pride and Prejudice. It is appropriate for all audiences.

A pride and prejudice variation that is imaginative and fun. I love Jennifer Joy's books. She has a truly amazing imagination. Darcy must question himself of course.

This reader truly appreciates how in depth and thorough the author is when it comes to characterization in this variation.

The leads are somewhat altered from Canon and it’s very remarkable how the author makes these already well-established characters, namely the Darcys and Bennets, as her own. At first, this reader didn’t like Mr. Darcy so much as most of past-read variations, but she loves the way Mr. Darcy progressed and developed over the course of the novel into the man Elizabeth Bennet deserves. Elizabeth also came into the discovery of love early on, but holds back enough to justify being a lady of Regency times. Their friendship is a fresh and welcome take compared to the often contentious relationships in majority of variations. The Bennets seeing the Darcys and other characters such as Colonel Fitzwilliam and the Hurts, in a new and more favorable perspective truly changes the tone of the beloved Jane Austen classic.

All in all, this variation is a worthwhile read for those wishing for a fresh take on Pride & Prejudice.

This author writes well, allowing me to become engrossed in the story and not distracted by poor writing and/or editing. FD behaves differently than normal, allowing EB to see a side of him she doesn't in the original. It's agreeable that Collins does not make an appearance in this story, and that the Colonel and Georgiana both play fairly large roles. I'd rate this as four and a half stars--to rate five stars for me, books must be well-written (this is) and either realistic or laugh-out-loud funny. This is close to both. I found it a very enjoyable read and well worth the price.

The author has good writing skills and the book has no noticeable typos or errors.
However, the story is frustratingly slow in parts and Darcy's behavior is sometimes inconsistent.
A good editor would have tightened up the chapters to make it flow better.
I liked the story, but put it aside several times before I finished it because it didn't hold my attention in places.

Yet another delightful P&P variation from Jennifer Joy! I delighted in Caroline Bingley being exposed and put in her place. Well done, though she does make a good match and has a family in the end.

A phrase not used in the original P&P, or other stories of the time, such as Sense and Senseability or Emma, about getting 'the cut direct'. Borrowed straight out of Bridgerton; a disappointment at that.

I look for more from Ms. Joy in the future.

I adore books like this, written by a competent author, who knows how to develop a plot, and populate it with characters that you can care about. The added bonus here is that it's written with a fine and subtle sense of humor, which is a real treat. Colonel Fitzwilliam is suffering from a broken heart, having been passed over by a woman for someone with better prospects, and he's wallowing in melancholy. On the advice of his mother, the Countess of Matlock, Darcy takes Richard to Hertfordshire to stay at Bingley's home, Netherfield Park. Georgiana comes as well, and she's still recovering from the Ramsgate debacle.

Before their carriages even reach Netherfield, there's an incident involving a mule, a dog, a duck, and a duck egg that is the backdrop for their party's first meeting with Jane and Elizabeth Bennett, and Charlotte Lucas, and it's hilarious. Since their first encounter is altered, the relationship between Elizabeth and Darcy is different, and much more pleasant. There isn't the usual acrimony between them, and it's lovely. Romance is in the air, and not just for ODC.

The animals have recurring roles throughout the story, giving it a fanciful and cheerful feel. We do have two villains, Caroline Bingley and Wickham, but their attempts at trouble making are sources of frustration for them, and humor for the reader. There is an episode late in the book in which Elizabeth acts particularly stupid, and almost loses Darcy. However, love finds a way, and I like the story too much to deduct a star. I appreciate the important role given to Georgiana, and like very much when she's allowed to have some personality and backbone.

The book is well written and well edited. I recommend it highly.

Colonel Fitzwilliam suffers heartbreak after a refusal of the most acute kind. Fitzwilliam Darcy is clueless in his ministrations to his cousin, the Colonel. now enter Charles Bingley, who comes as light to the darkness, in his call for one and all to begin anew - all for one and all for one!!! so, off to Netherfield they would go! accompanied by Darcy's reticent younger sister, Georgiana, a somber carriage left London to Hertfordshire and the town of Meryton. two of these gentlemen could only hope to lift the saddened heart of the Colonel. little were they prepared to encounter the three ladies who would take their measure and supply all manner of comfort and good sense. Miss Charlotte Lucas, Miss Jane Bennet and Miss Elizabeth Bennet would give a country welcome to these gents, and provide the balance needed - fire to ice, yin to yang, salt to pepper.. you get the idea. sweetness, goodness and humor abound in this wonderful tale. oh, the bad guys would make their appearance for sure (Caroline Bingley, Wickham), but the comradery of three gents and the sisterly affection of the ladies would meet the miscreants every step of the way. a Maltese Duchess would demand her seat at the table. Clarice would be mule-stubborn. Jemima would flap her support (always fun when critters are involved !!) Jennifer Joy does give much joy in this tale of three most (un)suitably matched couples looking for, and finding, their HEAs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Credible plot, incredible characters

While the pairings are a bit of a foregone conclusion, it was a delight for how well they came together.
Ms. Joy pulled the Bennets together quite credibly, and Georgiana's evolution was spectacular!
Lastly, Bingley and Jane displaying their spine without losing their essential characters always elevates any P&P ff, so yay!

4.0 out of 5 stars Engaging characters and logical plot; some confusion
Reviewed in Canada on August 18, 2021
I really liked A Splendidly (Un)Suitable Match. Ms. Joy's characters are well-rounded, her plot makes sense, and she creates a delightful farce. There's nothing steamy, nothing squirmily uncomfortable, nothing unpleasant.

The only issue I had was a conversation between Lizzy and Darcy - unfortunately, their major confrontation and the climax of the novel. I read it, re-read it, put the Kindle away and read it again...and still I don't understand why the characters took offence to each other or why they acted that way. It's as if robots got control of them and forced them to act in a way that serviced the plot. But the rest of it is so good that it's only really worth a single star, and for all I know it could be me who's at fault.

4.0 out of 5 stars A variation on Pride & Prejudice
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 16, 2022
You always knew there was to be a happy ending, but this story found an alternative & different way to get there. We are all the normal characters, but with a different reason for them to be in Hertfordshire. Many outcomes are the same, but some end with different partners. Well worth a read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Light and yet not shallow. Great story!
Reviewed in Canada on July 20, 2023
This book was lovely! Really well written. It is was light and yet not shallow, with good characters, and many interesting situations and dialogues. I was smiling for most of it.

I absolutely loved having Richard and Georgiana join them at Netherfield. Having Bingley, Richard and Darcy together was the best. The same for Elizabeth, Charlotte and Jane.

The animals in this story provide a source of amusement and mischief that creates situations that are funny but have meaning. It was not silly.

This was also the best conclusion for Wickham that I ever read. Georgiana would make anyone proud.

The variation here is that because of Richard’s heartbreak, he, Georgiana and Darcy go to Netherfield together. Richard said he wanted to be as taciturn as Darcy to avoid future heartbreaks. That forces Darcy to exert himself and be more sociable. There is no Hunsford, Mr Collins, or Lady C. Miss Bingley plays a big role. Wickham’s participation is very short.

Anyways, very much recommended!

A lovely story with little angst. Darcy shows humour and is not too proud. Elizabeth is her irrepressible self. There is no Lady Catherine who I did not miss, nor Mr Collins who I did. Wickham was quickly dealt with, thankfully. All in all a joy to read .. one I will read again
